This video shows you how to tie an obijime perfectly. I also explain the difference between obijime and so-called “sanbuhimo” that you use when using an obidome. Plus, I’m showing you a trick from my friend how to put the motif of an obijime on top.

Thank you so much for your videos!! Because of this and the one on how to fold kimono, I was able to impress a store owner I was volunteering with by folding kimono and explaining how to dress better than her other volunteer (another Japanese woman, I'm an American currently living in Japan), and she has officially hired me to help at special events and learn more about kimonos and other Japanese antiques!!

This was so nice to see directions with camera above. Sometimes i get confused about the obijime knot direction and end up guessing...

Yess! I totally feel you. I'm so bad at distinguishing left and right (it's silly, I know, but rue), that's why I definitely add the perspective from above. Thanks for your comment on that!!

Thank you for this! I've never been able to wrap my head around how to get just one side of the obijime to show on both sides of the knot. You're a lifesaver!!

Thank you for breaking this down. It also confirmed from watching other videos that a square knot is used! I always thought it was, but your videos always give that extra little bit of detail that others seem to gloss over.

Just wanted to confirm what you said:, “wearing both sides down means you are a “wearing model””? This is a great kitsuke combo! I agree with below, a male video would be interesting!

Keith Virgin hi! Sorry that my English is so unclear there, it means “mourning”. Male kimono video will come as soon as I’ve finished my husband’s outfit. Still sewing, so it’ll take a while.

I was always confused about the end of the obijime, one up one down or both up (I knew both down was a big no-no), not it's crystal clear ! Does it matter if it's left or right for the up / down way of doing ?

Thank you so much for your videos and for sharing you knowledge! Could you also explain the difference between a Nagajuban and a Yukata? Could I wear a Yukata as Juban?
@BillyMatsunaga
@BillyMatsunaga 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Yukata is like a kimono, a juban is an undergarment. It would be like trying to wear jeans as pants under another pair trousers. And I’ve talked about the difference between yukata and kimono in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pr5of7ug28mXiqc.html In the beginning this is all very confusing, but you’ll get behind it soon 😉 feel free to ask me anything anytime ❤️

Thank you so much for your video's, I'm in the process of watching every one here on youtube! I want to make a nezuko cosplay from Kimetsu no yaiba while making an actual kimono instead of the ready to order cosplay options. the obijime for Nezuko is tied differently than you show here, is this another variety of a 'real' knot or did they make it so just for the manga and anime ? I would love to see you do a video of the knot it it's a real existing one!
@BillyMatsunaga
@BillyMatsunaga 2 жыл бұрын
Hey there! Nezuko’s obijime is exactly tied like the first knot I show in this video. You might want to true a round and smaller obijime to get her look, but it’s the same knot. Have fun practicing!

Hello Billy, I recently purchased my first obijime but it keeps coming lose when I try to tie it. It is the flat type obijime with silk on one side and gold on the other side. Is this type more difficult to tie? Should I get a round type obijime without gold as a beginner?

That nibuhimo looks like tablet weaving (Bretchenweberei). I did not know that Japanese used this technique too. Most obijimes I have seen seem to be braided, plainly woven or knotted using macramé technique. (Or does it only look similarly to tablet weaving? I would need to see more detailed and focussed photo to be sure.)

Thank you so much ❤️ unfortunately I’m not a fan of Tsukuri Obi (coz I tie my obi in 3 minutes and it’s for me the most fun when dressing up 🙈), hence I’ve never touched one before. So, this is probably the only thing I really won’t be able to help you. Sorryyyyy 😭😭😭😭

i see some styles in the kimono where they add flares, pleats and skirt like things under the obi .. is that common or normal in kimono or its like a custom styling?
@BillyMatsunaga
@BillyMatsunaga 3 жыл бұрын
As soon as you see pleats of something else: it’s not a kimono 😊 it’s then a kimono inspired dress.
