I seriously just cut down a 80 ft tree just now using your video. It was hanging over a power line and a hunting cabin sitting on a hill, tied a rope to my truck and cut that sucker down. Thanks brother

When you realize that a slip know is the mother of so many knots. A bowline is a slip knot with the short end passed through the loop. A butterfly is a pulled slip. A fisheman is a doubled slip. and so on. You just have to learn different ways to tie a slip and so many other knots become easier and more understandable when added from a slip knot starting position.

Great video, I understand it, I am an arborist. Beginners will have to get the basics first then look at this a couple of times. I like the explaination of the difference of the marlinspike and the slip knot. I always called them both the slip knot, just orientated in a different direction, one for pulling up, one for pulling down.

Great color for the rope. The proper term is 'Turn' nor 'Twist'. Regarding the first part of the Bowline. Turn, Bight, and Twist, they are all different.

Actually the correct term would be a loop. A turn is a loop around an object.

Can a slip knot be used for tieing off a limb ? I've always used the bowline but I have a limb that's way out and I'm going to have to get a loop around it such as the slipknot features to hook it with a pruner and pull it tight. I will have a groundmens keeping constant pressure and holding it tight. Does this matter?

I have a bunch of 20-30 foot rigging rope pieces I got in the "bag o rope". It's all 5/8 to 3/4 inch diameter. What should I do with these pieces? I'm new to rope rigging and trying to figure what to do with these sections. Thanks again for any help!

Would you really recommend a bowline for life support? The loop that it makes does not cinch down on the carabiner, therefore making it possible to side load.

if you are concerned about side loading with any knot just make a night appropriate for the object being tied to. No different then the Right family and Nine family.

See man, I used to tie them like that when I worked on towboats in the 80's but the capt didn't like it because the tag end is in the loop. So my squirrel started going the other direction around the tree so the tag end is outside the loop.

What do you think of an anchor bend? I've been told its a safe climbing knot, and even that you don't need a stopper just a decent tail. But it looks so bare I'm not sure I can trust it. Very fast to tie/untie though!

Taut line hitch is the ideal climbing method. I can't explain it with words, you'd have to look it up.

Anchor Hitch is good to secure a line to a carabiner so that it will not shift position. Leave a long enough tail to tie a Blake’s Hitch, and it makes an excellent climbing Hitch with minimal bulk.

Tiffany, I hope that you take another look at the video now that it is a year or so later. There are a couple of places where the other side of the knot could have been shown so one knows it’s correct- like the alpine butterfly... to know what to look fo to be sure it’s not an alpine ‘moth’. And I could be way out on a limb here- but perhaps “catch” just got caught being insecure with themselves if they are “bashing” a chick that is entering or already in the industry. I’m thinking there are far more trees in the world than arbourist. Not like you are going to take their job. I think it sounds like they are capable of messing it up themselves. And if that’s not the case- I sure wouldn’t want the company or that person to be anywhere around my neck of the woods with that attitude. Maybe they were just “hangry”. I hope whatever is or was going so bitter in their life at the time of their reply has subsided and maybe they are “feeling much better now.” Stay awesome, Tiffany.

I’ve been tying and using Blake’s Hitch for 20 years. It cannot, and never has, “rolled out”. If you believe the safety knot is required, or even useful, you simply do not understand the dynamics of this knot (Blake’s Hitch).

Redundancy. Like when someone teaches a kid to never point a gun at anyone, loaded or unloaded. Nobody every got shot by an unloaded gun, but the advice builds habits that could save lives. Some kid is going to tie Blake’s hitch wrong today, fail to dress it properly etc. and then ascend on it, and that tail stop is going to save his life

@@CaliforniaCarpenter7 Well said. And while we "should" never fly when it's raining, freezing, use a bad rope (too slippery, frayed, too small or short), messed up the knot, don't dress it properly, let the knot get jammed in the pulley..., in the long run it's better to be safe than sorry.

Had to go watch a different video. Too fast and no good views of the knots. When you're actually teaching people something you have to remember that they don't know how to do it. It's not just a refresher course. And oh yeah, pitiful camera work.
