Arborists use rope every day, which means it's essential to know how to tie useful knots. In this video, Nick Bonner shows how to tie the most basic knots used in tree care and climbing. You'll learn how to make a bowline, blake's hitch, alpine butterfly, running bowline, and a cow hitch.

Even the way I tie my running bowline. I don't have to pull the entire rope through. But I do like that way and look forward on tieing it that way tomorrow in the field. I was always aware of that method. Just always stuck with what I knew. But shaving seconds is shaving hours.

Nice video Nick. When doing the bowline you looked a bit like a magician as it wasn't real easy to see the way you tied it how you liked to tie it. I like that way too as I believe most who know it do. Have a great week.

@@NickBonner welcome. You do it better than I do, that's why I don't have any videos doing it 😃. Maybe if you don't again a camera angle from above your hands would help. Regardless the video is a great resource for many and I will recommend it to others just learning. Have a great day.

@@brettblack7049 I agree, I'm a newbie here and trying to understand the knot from the front view get's a little confusing. I think an overhead shot would improve the visibility. Thanks Nick for putting out this knowledge for new jack's like me. ~ Peace~

Hey Nick. You made a common mistake on the yosemite tie off. Following the line back around and going up your tail goes on the left side of your up rope. See Educated Climber yosemite tie off revisited for the possible problems with the common mistake you made.

Don't understand the rationale of adding security to the bowline when it is already extremely secure. It's an unnecessary overkill in my humble opinion.

1:45 For... the love of god... stop using the bowline in life support situations. By definition, any knot that you are having to make more secure by adding some sort of "finish" to is an *insecure* knot!
