When first learning the “Ian Knot” - the world's fastest shoelace knot - it's difficult to keep everything tight while tightening the knot. This video shows a couple of the tricks I've developed over the years for tying the “Ian Knot” tightly.

Thanks for your kind words, Richard. Nice to know that people not only appreciate the knot itself but also don't mind me filling my channel with various tips about it.

I'm using it since 2005 and it changed my life in the same way! I'm using a variation of this knot to close plastic bags too

Thanks for your compliment, Eric! I'm never sure whether people would prefer me to be more up-beat and lively, and also wonder if they can understand my Aussie accent. Good to know that my laid-back style works for you.

Great that you're learning all the aspects of the “Ian Knot” - and that you’ll be passing on what you've learned to the next generation.

This knot has fascinated me for a while, and I'm able to tie it just fine, and with good speed, but it's always a struggle to tie it tightly, even with your hints here. It takes many attempts of tying and retying. It usually ends up easier to go back to the "single loop" method I'm used to. I still do see a benefit of this knot: 1) Wearing the shoes casually, like for walking around the inside of the house. 2) When making a quick trip outside, like to get something from the garage, or to retrieve an item left in the car. 3) Quickly tying a bunch of shoes when not being worn, like for display, storage, or transport.

Thanks for your feedback, Kevin. One thing I've learned over the years is that people's individual shoe lacing and tying preferences vary greatly. It seems that you prefer an even greater tightness than can easily be accomplished with the Ian Knot. I'm pleased that you nonetheless find it useful.

One option you have is in the first step with the initial left over right. Wrap the leftover right one extra time, when you pull that tight it will hold much better. Then you can finish with the Ian knot. Granted, this slows you down a bit and it no longer has the world's fastest way to do things, but it's still faster than the old way

I took this to the next level by using my own Ian Knot method for the second knot, and also using it for the first crossover by pulling the ends through.

Sounds like you've really gotten the hang of it. Be sure to mirror the first and second stages though in order to finish with a secure result.

I threw in the towel on keeping the starting knot taut. Now I use the crossing between the top two rows as a surrogate starting knot by re-crossing the ends under it and tying the finishing part of an Ian Knot there. A bonus is that you can't possibly tie a granny knot, at least that I can see.

okay so a regular granny knot but always pull hard and maintain tension - make as small loop as possible - pull up as high as you can when you're transfering each side to the other got it!

How do I know which lace is going to be "on top" using the Ian knot method? I want to make sure I tie the first half knot right so I end up with a square knot instead of a granny knot.
@ProfShoelace
@ProfShoelace Жыл бұрын
The simple answer is to tie with the left end “on top”. My other video titled “Ian Knot Detailed Tutorial” shows much more info on tying correctly to avoid the Granny Knot.
