How to day trade part time while working a full time 9 to 5 job? I explain my process doing so when I was building my small trading account.

1. When's the best time to trade stocks as a part time trader with a 9 to 5 job?
When I was working my 9-5 and trading, I would wake up at 5am PST to prepare for my morning watchlist and do my research. Sometimes I'll do some premarket trading but most times I like to wait to trade at the market open.
Trading the open is the ideal time for part time traders because you get immediate follow through on the morning gappers, both with penny stocks and large cap stocks long and short. After trading for about 2 hours then I will go to work.
I did not like to trade at work because there was no way I could watch the stock movements during intraday trading. So I would research stocks closing strong on the day to buy and swing overnight. If you buy a stock overnight, that does not count as a day trade under PDT rule.
2. Use range orders/ bracket orders/ OCO orders when trading.
Most trading brokers have these order types, that allow you to attach stop loss order and take profit order when you are in a position long or short. And when one order get's hit, your trading broker will cancel the other outstanding order automatically. Trade zero, Thinkorswim, and Interactive brokers all offer these bracket order types.
3. Keep your job! Make sure to have financial stability.
I would never suggest anyone to quit their job to become a day trader. Day trading is a long term business that requires full time effort. To trade well you need financial stability and finances in control. You should not be relying to day trading income to pay your bills.
Quitting your job to become a day trader full time is extremely stressful. Do not do so until you've had consistency in day trading and know the best strategies suitable for yourself. Trading full time requires a lot of market tuition upfront. Keep your job, save up, and learn to day trade part time to slowly grow your small account.

I live and work in Vancouver. I trade from 5:30am to 8:30am then go to my regular job at 9am. It gets me up in the morning, keeps me sharp, and makes me extra $$$. Great to see a fellow Canadian killing it in this business. Keep up the awesome work!

2016-2018 was s nightmare as I was almost bankrupt position trading in a theory of direction that wasn't panning out. Sleep deprevation, worrying about bills, family, health, with family helping financially. Hell, don't get yourseld into a position that finds money so tight, it can strangle you.

It's even better if you're able to trade a bit as a hobby while working a job until you have a built a considerable sized dividend portfolio. A healthy $24000 dividend portfolio will typically get you $100/month in passive income to spend, reinvest, or play around with day trading.

I’ve personally been hanging out in chat rooms for the purpose of learning the lingo. Every time i see a new term or phrase I simply google it to find out for myself what it means. Just a tip, not advising you to hang out in chat rooms by any means. I agree I would also like to see a lingo video though. Would be quite educational and entertaining!

I'd only quit my full time job once I can consistently make gains for maybe 2 years in a row. Even then I'd like to have multiple sources of income and not solely rely on gains from trading.

Alerts Alerts Alerts. When I was trading and working, they were my lifeline. Fortunately, I had a desk job at the time, so it made it a lot more convenient. Studied before work and after. Made my plan, and set alerts when the price came down to my targets. I'm on east coast which I think makes it a little more challenging, but setting those alerts were gold when I was stuck in that 9-5. Great Tips, and great video!

Earned my real interest when you said you came out of college and got a good job in the film & VFX industry That is what I am interested in! I saw somebody else comment this so I’m going to trend it out lol. My motivation to become a trader are: 1 - cause I want to be able to be there for my future kids cause mine couldn’t be due to 9 - 5 2. - Being able to live life NOW while I can instead of living life when I’m 60 after “retiring” 3. Never having to worry about losing my job 4. To have financial freedom (relative to my needs: which would be $60,000 a year ideally) which is years away for me, I’m not looking to get rich or expecting to get rich like most people do going into it. 5. Being able to work ANYWHERE in the world wether I’m on vacation or a friends wedding, or being able to live wherever I want.

What I want to know is how you trade part-time when you live on the East Coast. I get to work an hour before opening and get home 2 hours after the market closes. I guess I could try trading my lunch break but....yeah not sure that is going to work all that well.

Implement your plans for the next day and set up trailing stop loss orders. Or.. you can research algorithmic trading and place your bets on that.
