Transitioning into daycare can be stressful for both the parents and the child. In today's episode (the final episode of season 3!), I discuss the research around daycare transitions also known as the adaptation phase.
I discuss how to help a child build a connection with their new caregiver and what I believe should be the procedure in all daycares.
If your daycare can't allow you to join your child at the daycare, I offer alternatives to help minimize the stress for your child on their first day. Whether you have a baby, toddler, preschooler or your child is starting daycare, preschool, or meeting a new nanny, this episode will be your guide!

Thank you for reassuring me that I"m not crazy. My child started daycare this month and i expected opportunities for transition, rather than just hand him over and go. Everyone around me is saying this is how school is, and all I keep saying is that it doesnt have to this traumatic if there is an adequate orientation process in place. I will be using the tips you shared at home. Thank you!

Hi! Loved this episode. Very useful! You mention that you would like the research you refer to in the episode notes but I couldn’t find it. Am I searching it in the wrong place maybe? Thanks!

Any advice for how to gently prepare a toddler (currently 14 months will be closer to 16/17 months when in care) for sleeping without being nursed to sleep? Currently I am the only person able to get my child to sleep at any time except when she is in the car. We currently cosleep and feed to sleep.

That's a great question! I would say to start by making some changes to your night routine. If you read a book before nursing, read 2 or do something after you read the book (perhaps play some calming music or a meditation/calming audio from my app called Wondergrade). I used to play with a flashlight with my child in the dark and create shadows on the wall. They would love it and get sleepy (eventually). This way you are allowing them to fall asleep while still connecting with you (if this works for you!). Hope this was helpful!

My daughter is a very anti social person. She is only comfortable with her family in our house hold. It’s extremely concerning because we struggle to have anyone watch her because she cry, yells and kicks if we leave. Hoping I can gain some insight here

Your child is suffering abandonment anxiety or emotional neglect so her fight or flight instincts are activated. Individuals with a history of emotional neglect may exhibit anxious, avoidant, or disorganized attachment styles. Anxious attachment manifests as a fear of abandonment, leading to clinginess and constant seeking of validation. See Erica Komisar
