The different buoyancy posed and issue in the stackable sprout containers but actually helped you in the propagators. Good idea

Great job....loved the video. I am working on building a system like yours. It appears I need to spend some time getting my indoor light growing system setup in order to get the plants root system long enough to be put in the NFT system. Keep up the great work. Love the videos.

Hey hoocho I graduated a year ago with a bachelors in horticulture I just want to say your videos are some of the best on the internet your an inspiration I see you as another professor. Also are there any crocs in your area of Australia?

Cheers mate, though I don’t have any formal qualifications. I get all my knowledge from personal research and trial and error. I’ve thought about doing a course but wouldn’t know where to begin. My education was in the biomedical science field. No crocs in our area. Though you don’t have to travel far north before they start appearing,

So, I've gone and put together an "aeroponic" spray propagator bin and I'm also planning to do a vermiculite/pearlite ebb and flow system for seed starting. Do you think I really need that aeroponic step?

Since vermiculite / perlite is inert, is there any reason to wash it off the roots other than the fact it might gum up the NFT system? Would the increase in water being held next to the roots be a bad thing at all?
@Hoocho
@Hoocho 4 жыл бұрын
If you’re not worried about your system clogging there’s no reason you have to remove it. There’s no need for it though. The roots are going into DWC which gives adequate oxygen and water. Same with NFT.

Instead of cutting holes in the lid and putting the pucks in the holes, wouldn't it work to just let the pucks float on the surface of the water? Then you could get more seedlings in the propagator, finish in less time, and not have to worry about the water level dropping. Or would that drown the plants?
@Hoocho
@Hoocho 3 жыл бұрын
The bubbles popping on the water splashes the roots giving a quicker result. Been meaning to do an update video specifying how to set the system up. You want a gap of about an inch between the water and the top so the roots get splashed and are not completely submerged.

Hey Hoocho, can you reuse the vermiculite and perlite after removing the seedlings?
@Hoocho
@Hoocho 4 жыл бұрын
I’ve been thinking about this question. Since they’re both heat treated minerals I think you could heat treat them again to sterilise them. But I’m not sure what the organic matter you kill will do to the mix after it’s sterilised. I may experiment in the future. But for now I’ll refresh each time and use it as a blank slate.
@scottharris2942
@scottharris2942 4 жыл бұрын
@@Hoocho I'll try it out in my system and test heat treatment and maybe UV sterilization. Would be great for cost cutting if it can be reused. Gotta say I appreciate your vids. Your NFT creation video finally motivated me to build my system.

Would you reuse the perlite and vermiculite?
@Hoocho
@Hoocho 4 жыл бұрын
I’ve been considering this... if you cooked it on high in your oven I think you may be able to get away with it... or sterilised it with H2O2
@MsSAinyourFace
@MsSAinyourFace 4 жыл бұрын
@@Hoocho the oven would give it a chance to dry out if you need to store it, I guess? I like that idea. But perhaps just an hour of contact with H202 would do the trick. Managed to get my first batch of seeds sprouted beautifully (in palm peat) and when they went to the DWC, it all crashed and died in a somewhat spectacular fashion. Going for round two now. Wish me luck. Btw - not sure if you have one up, but it would be a fantastic video to watch where you tell your story on how you got started and how many times you failed, what you learned and how you got to where you are today. You are an inspiration :) thanks for replying!
