- unexplained weight loss
- unexplained fevers, chills, or night sweats
- history of cancer
- significant loss of strength in one or both legs

- new difficulty in holding your or releasing urine or stool
- worsening pain greater than 3 months
- significant trauma
- new back pain while taking oral steroids
- age greater than 70 with new back pain
- pain worst in the middle of the night
