Thanks for posting this. I just purchased a Drivesmart 55 a few days ago having previously owned a Nuvi 2445 which has been working flawlessly for over 10 years but just fancied something a bit more up to date. I never realised that letting it count down was only putting it into a sleep mode. I then went and checked the Garmin Camper 660 I have for our motorhome and realised that I've been doing it wrong it with that for over 4 years doing heaven knows what damage to the battery, so no doubt that it may need a new battery sometime soon!

Hey pal my name is Larry you hit it right on the nose I've been hassling with my 61 Garmin three and a half years you're the only one that talks sensible not even the ones that show the video from the start opening the box and explaining about the button in the back and everything else your sleep mode and all that excellent you need a raise also what I do now I bring my GPS every night in the house I plug it in the AC outlet and charge it for another hour or so before I use it again the next day but I charge it in the sleep mode because the satellite I do not want to lose because sometimes then the unit if I'm not if I turn it off totally he goes in and out in and out until I get the signal and it leaves me stranded so I leave it in sleep mode charge it and sleep mode and then plug it back in my cigarette lighter the next day thanks Guy

Excellent advice to make the GPS battery last longer. The other advice would be not to leave the GPS inside the car because the heat kills the battery.

If you're on external power, you can just unplug it. The system will play a shutdown sound and turn off in 30 seconds.
