How to Turn a Pocket Knife into a Folding Whittling Knife for Wood Carving

Inspired by an Oar Wood Carving Knife, in this video I take a Rough Ryder Classic Carbon Canoe Knife ( amzn.to/3uyGGyC ) (about $15 when I made this video) and turn it into a pocketable whittling knife. This knife is now a great on-the-go wood carving knife. This process could be applied to almost any pocket knife, but it will work best on a knife that is comfortable in the hand and has high carbon steel blades.

I like the idea. Sure, I could spend $60 on a flexcut, but you just created a better looking knife that functions the way you want it too. The idea of taking a classic looking knife of your choosing, and making it into the 'perfect' whittler is an awesome spin on it all. Very nice job. New project ahead ... thanks.

I have an oar carver, and does it cut! Unbelievable. But you did a fantastic job on this rough rider. I'm working on a rough rider at the moment. Making it suitable for whittling.

Thanks Josh. I just purchased this knife so that I can mimic this great tutorial. Just need to get a hold of one of these fine grinding wheels. If I can pull this off I will convert a few for friends as gifts. You channel is becoming a fast favourite and have recommended to my mates. Cheers!

Thanks, I appreciate that, and I am glad you enjoy my channel. As for the grinder in this video, a half speed grinder is nice because it doesn't heat up the metal as fast as a full speed, but you could do it with just about any grinder, or wet sharpener. If you use a normal speed black wheeled grinder only remove a tiny bit of metal at a time, dip in water very often, and be very careful at the tip. I suppose you could do all this by hand on stones, diamond plates, or even sandpaper in a pinch, it would just take a while. Anyway, good luck, I hope you and your friends enjoy the knives.

A piece of leather glued to a small piece of wood with some cheap green compound and a flexcut whittling jack so much easier for the average whittler.

I’m wondering how your knife is working and if it holds a edge on it? And if you could do a update video on it.
@JoshsShop
@JoshsShop Жыл бұрын
The knife is holding up really well. I intentionally chose the "Classic Carbon" series knife because the steel has a higher carbon content (similar to 1095), and has proven to hold an edge similar to other higher carbon steel. It is harder than a Swiss Army knife but softer than the D2 steel in my Great Eastern Cutlery Pocket Carver. My only real complaint is how hard one of the blades is to open, it is a real nail breaker. Other than that, I really enjoy it. I like your idea of an update video, I will work on that soon. Thanks 👍

I always thought a hollow grind was the best for carving knives? That secondary bevel looks like it would lend to some very shallow cuts
@JoshsShop
@JoshsShop 3 жыл бұрын
It all depends on the style of carving you are doing and preference. I like to use a knife ground like this one with a convex bevel for whittling and carving small figures. When I am working on something larger, like say a spoon, I reach for a knife with a Scandiavian (Scandi) grind like a Morakinv. There are people that prefer just one type for everything, but I switch it up depending on wood choice and type of project.

Kinda think of it like moonshiners tinkering with ways to make their cars faster back in the day. This is not only fun but can yield great results. Rough Ryder's are a great inexpensive knife that you can "tune" or customize the blades to your liking. This is also rewarding in so many ways, you can improve your sharpening skills, which is definitely needed, no matter what brand or how much you pay. I've owned several flexcut whittling Jacks and even modified a couple of the blades for a few friends as well as my personal one. Order one and give it a try, you might be surprised by the results. 😎👍

But I actually dig those rough rider canoes and the drop blades they come with. Cool mod though. You can get those for 10 bucks sometimes even with bone or denim micarta scales, have a fun project, and make it your own. Well done. I don't whittle too often, so I'd leave the main blade as is for edc general purpose. I have SAKs like that where I did what you did to the pen blade only.
