This lesson is helpful coz it shows you how native speakers shorten words in everyday English conversation. “Coz” means “because”, and there are many shortened words like this. In this class, we’ll look at comfy, delish, cas, meds, and more - I hope this lesson will be one of your faves. www.engvid.com/native-english...

I worked in the US for a number of years on an international team comprising Japanese, Russian, Korean, Italian, French, German, Austrian, Swedish, Spanish, and American scientists. Funny fact, we could easily understand everyone else despite our very strong and different accents and frequent grammatical errors, but we often could not understand the American fellows speaking proper English. This is frequently misportrayed in movies, where the English-speaker main characters speak to foreign characters who, despite their very poor and broken English, seem to understand them without any problem. I think that for anyone with a low/intermediate level in a foreign language, it is much easier to get understood than to understand native speakers. I bet it's much easier for an English speaker to understand another fellow English speaker speaking broken Spanish than to understand a conversation between two Spaniards.

Hi Adam, all in all these abbreviations are understandable; think that abroad I met people who spoke the dialect in the street and it was almost impossible to understand them! Let's say that a lot is up to the intelligence of the native speakers; for example, if I speak to a foreign person in my native language, I avoid using too much slang as it is likely that the interlocutor will not be able to understand me.
