This happen to be my biggest obstacle in learning Spanish.

The thing is I can't understand english rappers im sure as heck not gonna try to understand spanish 😀

I was watching the news and it literally sounded like they were rolling their r's for like four sentences. 😂😂

I learned a lot a lot of vocabulary watching telenovelas with Spanish subtitles. I write the words I don't know. Novelas repeat a lot of the same words every episode. Especially, sometimes the spelling and how we hear is different. Maybe this can help beginners not he so overwhelmed.

As a gringo sitting at a restaurant in Barcelona, this is exactly what I’ve been struggling with feeling like I’ve forgotten all the Spanish I have learned. It’s so easy for me to read and decipher text but understanding someone speaking quickly is really frustrating because I feel disrespectful not understanding them when I truly am trying. Usually it’s just one word that I don’t understand and then I get thrown off listening to the rest. By the time I’ve processed it the person had already spoken 10 more words, which even if I knew I didn’t catch because I was stuck on that first confusing word. Sometime The way that I mumble in English often.... I’m sure Spanish speakers would have the same difficulties hearing me. Thanks for the renewed confidence in learning, glad to know someone else has been challenged by this as well.

Don't stress your mind, I'm a spanish native speaker and even for us it could be difficult to understand sometimes, spanish speakers speak faster than english speakers, sometimes we tend to ignore parts of the speech when we consider someone has a bad pronunciation but we take the last words as reference, other thing could be that spanish language has a rhythm that you have to get used to, listen to the vowels carefully, not to the consonants. watch soaps operas, they exaggerate the pronunciation of the vowels. by the way,,, I'm a english learner from mexico, If someone wants to practise with a native, I'm charmed to help.

I'm a native Spanish Speaker and honestly this is out of control fast... Way too fast. I could not understand it. Please do not worry about speaking/understanding as fast as Dominicans. Most latin americans can't even understand them. No offense intended, but don't waste time trying to understand Chilean or Dominican Spanish. Nobody outside their countries understand them.

2 things: KZfaq allows you to play videos at faster and slower speeds. Slow those speakers down and then build back up to "regular speed". As for subtitles, I only use Spanish subtitles, never the English. It can also help to watch something in Spanish you already know very well. Great videos.

Been a Spanish speaker for most of my adult life. I am half Cuban and half Jamaican. However, like you, I had to learn Spanish from scratch. I would describe myself as fairly proficient, meaning I’m about 75% versed in the language, and can easily strike up a conversation with most native Spanish speakers and hold my own. But I will confess that my ears could do with some more training. I really appreciate what you’re doing and the humorous way n which you do it. I can relate to your material, and find it very helpful. If I were as clever as you I’d probably be doing the same thing. 😂 Keep it coming, you’ve found a very nice nitch.

That's exactly what I do..lol. . I listen to a lot of Dominican, Latin, French, Nigerian and Jamaican music on my workout playlist and I will pick out words that sound close to an English word to understand what they are saying... It's amazing how the mind works. I do not speak Spanish but I can sing more words than I can speak. That's no longer enough for me.. I really want to sing, speak and eat the language. I am 200% ok with putting the English language to rest. lol

I've been taking up Spanish classes since high-school and im getting my BA degree with a minor in Spanish. Its always been so hard for me to understand Spanish speakers when they speak so fast or Spanish singers who sing so fast and it is important to keep in mind that each Spanish speaking country has their own slang and different dialogoue and words that they use. I've been learning Spanish for 13 years and it makes me sad that I still have trouble understanding when it comes to listening to someone speak Spanish so fast and that im not fluent. I know how to read and write most Spanish. But listening and understanding and speaking it very fast are still my challenges but im just gonna apply myself much more and see where it takes me.

What has been helping me a lot with training my ears is an app known as Gritty Spanish. It is phenomenal. It also has transcripts where you see what they are saying in Spanish, as well as the English translation. I think it helps a lot and I also think Subtitles are phenomenal. You have to first train your eyes to have an idea of what is being said. Seeing does help with the pronunciation. At least for a start. Muchísimas gracias por estos videos increíbles. The best method is to do a lot of listening and have someone speak to you everyday. Use the words that you know and learn vocabulary. Learning language takes time and the sounds over time must be absorbed. The more you hear it and speak it, the more you will retain it. Anyone can learn a language in at least 1-3 months and at most a year if totally immersed im the language.

Subtitles are a crutch, it is OK to not understand every word, because you can gain most of the message in the context. over time with dedicated listening, the words will begin to make sense. Thanks for the suggestion to use Spanish comedy as a listening tool. One issue I commonly run into is not being able to find many videos online in Spanish that are really spoken natively. Most I come across are instructional videos of some sort where the speaker speaks in an a manner that is very easy to understand. It sometimes gives me the false impression that my Spanish is more advanced, until I hear a Spanish conversation in third person among native speakers that I can barely understand.

I think for me pronunciation is the most challenging. I can read Spanish better than when I started over a few months back. I can pray in Spanish, but not quite by memory yet. Thank you fir the video.

I’ve been studying Spanish for years, practically since 8th grade (without making much progress, sadly) and not once has a professor recommended watching comedy shows but it literally makes so much sense to do that. Thanks for the suggestion

Whenever you don't understand a language, it always sounds fast. Spanish seems fast, because of the frequency of consonants coming at you. Hard sounds. English has more vowel pauses, so it "seems" slower, but it really isn't. The amount of data being expressed within a given period of time is fairly constant among all languages. It is the perception of speed that varies. Japanese is considered the "fastest" language. Listen to it being spoken. Again, the hard, consonant sounds are very apparent, which catch the listeners' attentions. French seems "slow", again because of the frequency of softer sounds. Anyway, this is my observation.

I came on this 4 year old video to say that this method works. I was listening to a Spanish speaking podcast on Spotify on regular speed in small increments to see if I could understand what was being said. I kept rewinding until I could understand every word. If I didn’t know what a word meant, I wrote it down to look up the meaning later. After I listened on regular speed, I sped it up to see if I could still understand what was being said, and surprisingly I could. If you work the plan, the plan will work. I've done the rewinding over and over trying to pick out words and phrases so much that it starts to feel like one of those scenes in a detective movie where the detective is replaying part of a recording over and over looking for clues ...lol So glad someone made a video about this!

To figure out what they are saying, in real life you could ask the person to slow down. On the videos you could go the to cog on the bottom right of your screen and slow the speed down.

I really enjoyed this video! Personally, I've been using Hellotalk and listening to music/TV in Spanish. Whenever I hear a song/show I like in Spanish I look up the lyrics (to learn the words I don't know, and of course, to make sure I'm not repeating anything too out there XD) then I play it onward without lyrics/subtitles

I feel subtitles are great the first time you watch something. You can write the words and phrases you don't know, but after than you gotta give them up

I know this video is a little older, but right now I'm listening to duolingo podcasts, hillsong espanol and I feel like its not enough. I think I will try Spanish comedy. I needed this video! My moms family is from Puerto Rico but I’ve never learned Spanish so I decided to start teaching myself. I try talking with my family but some of my family make it so hard to converse with them because they talk SO fast. No lie, my aunts talks just like the guy in the rap song and it’s confusing and discouraging. I’ve never tried this technique but I will.

The correct idiom is "de *los* mios" aka, my crew, my team, etc. because saying "de lo mio" would mean "from mine" or "from my property" changing the meaning. Dominican and other caribean spanish speakers miss out on pronouncing the S when its at the end of the words.

i got the gist but yeah that was un poco rápido also what i do sometimes when watchin dominican channels is slow the video down from normal also i have a book called Quick Guide To Dominican Spanish which helps alot with slang and certain frases used in the DR and other Caribbean Countries ect..

Going to give this more of a try since I never really tried this method too much...unfortunately I've been stuck at the level where I can get the basic gist of things and understand the context but I can't understand everything still. Stand up comedy has got to be the biggest proof because I understand the overall context but don't get the jokes whatsoever (Makes me feel kind of dumb not going to lie). Maybe one day I can actually watch something in Spanish without subtitles but my hope has been declining day by day. I just ran into your videos so I will use your methods to help me. Thanks for the info, I still haven't given up yet.

It's nice if you can understand what the guy might be singing about but I could also say that as a native English speaker it can be very difficult to pick up on what is being said eveb in English speaking music, especially when the lyrics are uber fast. Personally I think music is a wonderful way to learn vocabulary and it can really help to feel connected to the language. However, if you really want to train your ear to the spoken language, aside from conversing with speakers of your desired language, the radio is a fantastic method - you are forced to really tune in to what is being discussed whilst also learning vocabulary across a diversity of subject matter. You also learn how people communicate with each other, especially if there is a debate going on. This is going to be very useful in its application in real world situations

One helpful thing I do is mimic what they're saying. It's almost muscle memory to help internalize what is said.

Some good advice here but as usual the trick is like life if you want to learn and progress. No shortcuts you got to do the work like he says and put in the hours. When some lovely Spanish woman says Hola and you respond in Spanish you will say oh yes it was worth it !!! :) My wife didn't see this comment ! :) Yes she will beat me.

Reggatones my favorite music and almost all I listen , but theirs times I hear vs like that and have that same look on my face at times dont know if need to train my ear better or what, cause when I hear these types of vs its like im listening to Eminem, Twisted insane , watsky, busta rhymes or daddy yankee, and most of these artist are rapping in english, but cant understand them that why im always like is it my hearing that need improving, more vocabulary or what, so wont have to search for las letra online. This video, and the tips helped alot.

The accent that I find the hardest to understand is a particular type of Mexican accent used by a lot of men, but I don't think I've heard a woman use it. In this accent, the vowels are very hard to distinguish. I can deal with the dropping of some consonants, especially S's and D's, but without distinctive vowels, I have to ask them to slow way down. My stepson speaks this way with his friends, but he knows he has to talk more normally with me. I don't have much trouble understanding women speaking Spanish, it's just some of the men. My Mexican wife almost always speaks clearly, even with her friends and relatives.
