How to Unlock Bootloader on Android! [Android Root 101 #1]

Want to root your Android smartphone or tablet? Want to install TWRP recovery and enjoy loads of custom ROMs available today for your Android device? Well, if so, in this tutorial I show you how to do exactly that starting with unlocking the bootloader. Before you can install TWRP recovery or install custom ROMs on your Android device, you will have to unlock the bootloader in most cases. Android devices guaranteed to work on: - Google devices like any Google Nexus or Pixel devices including Nexus 6, Nexus 6P, Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 4, Pixel 4 XL and any other Google devices are supported.
- All OnePlus devices are supported including OnePlus One, OnePlus Two, OnePlus 3/3T, OnePlus 5/5T, OnePlus 6, OnePlus 6T, OnePlus 7 Pro, OnePlus 7T.

You tutorial videos are the best on KZfaq. You give the exact step by step instructions unlike some of the other tutorials I have seen where they have only music and Captions where they skip a few steps on captions. You make unlocking and rooting simple for those people who are not as tech inclined. I fortunately am inclined in PC Mac/ Linux Android and IOS systems. Also you save people so much time by having the download files compiled and ready available. I wish i had tutorials like this when I was learning systems and coding with ADB. Keep up the wonderful tutorials for everyone my friend told me about this video who is not tech savvy but after watching your tutorials he rooted his phone and he was like I didn't without your help feeling accomplished so thank you for making people feel proud and accomplished for teaching them how to be techie.and not having to rely on a pro to do for them.

I dont know if this problem is because of the phone or computer, But whenever i try to do anything related to the bootloader, it just hangs at "..." ex. It hangs at "fastboot oem unlock", "fastboot oem ", and "fastboot flashing unlock"

figured it out! type: adb kill-server followed by adb start-server in CMD (on device) Settings -> Developer Options -> USB Debugging -- switch off and on [Windows] Make sure you have the proper driver (your best bet is Universal Adb Driver by Koushik Dutta -- will handle any device)

My new Realme x50m says "This phone model does not support in-depth test." In depth test is the app needed to unlock bootloader for realme phones. Any idea how to get around this? I'm completely stuck.

Thanks for the tip, if I ever need to bring my android for a repair, I'll never tell them that it's rooted. Usually, I fix everything on my own, which is the cool part of android. If you have an iphone and something happens with your device, yer f'd.

I have tab 4 SM-t231 but cannot flash it. I have several custom roms but always error and it says "E : error footer. and E : signatured verification failed". I used TWRP_3.0.0_Degas to flash directly to phone. When I used ODIN it doesn't work, cause ODIN need TAR or IMG file (many custom rom have zip extension). GoogleM, Octagon etc there are same error message (using TWRP 3.0 Degas).. Please enlighten me Mr Lee. Thanks.

try bootloader maybe. cd means going in a directory, which fastboot is a folder located outside of available storage/emulated/0 (or which is yours) you can go in.

Whenever I click Yes to the option it always Fail. Help please I use Nokia 3.1 Android version 9. The CMD also says FAILED (remote: ' Unlock operation is not allowed') I also extracted the .zip file but there is no file folder that is called image angler opm.... like you have in your video. will i need to look for it and download it separately?

So, how do you do this on an OPPO device? They have disabled access to the bootloader by disabling fastboot mode. It only reboots the device. Is there no one who knows how to get it done on OPPO?

i have samsung tab e 8in and i see the device under ADB devices but when ever i send a FASTBOOT command nothing happens it just says waiting for any device. and i already used OEM unlock from the developer menu. when i use the ADB reboot bootloader it restarts the devices but wont enter the fastboot mode

The reason unlocking the bootloader usually performs a factory reset was actually originally designed to protect your data. That’s because back in 2010s, Android didn’t encrypt user data, so unlocking without factory reset would just bypass any screen lock and allow the thief to see your personal info. The "OEM unlocking" option under developer options was actually originally supposed to temporarily disable this factory reset protection (or FRP for short), so that unlocking wouldn’t erase your data, but it would re-enable itself after reboot if you didn’t unlock bootloader. However, on modern devices, which encrypt data, there isn’t much reason to factory reset, so companies do it just to annoy the user (if you know of another reason, let me know).

All my adb drivers are up to date i think. I am on Samsung Galaxy Tab E SM-T377W. It simplly doesn't load into the bootloader. It restarts with Android's OS. I'm running Android 7.1.1

Samsung phones are the easiest phones to root and I've not bricked any or never had any problems rooting Samsung Galaxy phones! I have not been so lucky with other brands of phones!

Late reply, sorry. I know it doesn't matter anymore. When you unlock bootloader device security functions can't work and that means that your data can be exploited (someone can hack your phone). So their way to protect your data is to erase them. Stupid i know

Hi there Max! I have an old galaxy mega 6.3 in a good shape at my disposal and I want to put it to use. The rom is from 2013 and I decided to put on a new one but it's missing oem unlock toggle and none of the methods I've found and tried worked. Do you or any of the dudes you know have any idea? One word, Xiaomi. Edit: if you specifically want to root it, then just look for any old flagship phone you like with good hardware for that price. LG phones are cheap now, and they have excellent hardware.

it dosen,t show adb interface anywhere in my device manager. i unplugged my phone and plugged it back in and it still dosen,t show it.

yes in the simplest terms, but did you know newer phones like Pixel 2 use fastboot flashing unlock instead? You get B+ for the effort.

No, Huawei actually have their own bootloader unlocking website, but they never update it and lags behind a few months.

Hey I don't know if you ever will see this comment since this is from 5 years ago but I Did everything step by step and my CMD is saying 'fastboot' is not "recognized as an internal or external command" can you please make a video or help in some way?

when at... "fastboot oem unlock" it says and it just stays there for minutes and nothing happens. i tried both commands in windows 10. windows says the best drivers are installed but i can't find my one plus phone in device manager nevermind......... i used the most trusted os........ linux

I have a zenfone max with 6.0.1 and there is no option for "oem unlock", therefore the "fastboot flashing unlock" command does not work. Please help, I really tried almost everything

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1 in. 32GB that I got from my cousin. He didn't wipe it before had and when I tried to do the hard reset it tells me in the setup phase that an unauthorized reset has been attempted and to enter the google account to continue. My cousin won't give me the account so am I screwed? Thank you

When you say the process will erase everything on the phone do you mean that the device will be completely empty or do you mean that everything I have entered and installed will be erased?

when i'd say adb reboot bootloader, my device had restart. Why? (my device didn't show the screen with the android robot)

My Nexus 5X's bootloader is getting locked every time even if I am unlocking the bootloader again and again... After the process, It says that the bootloader is unlocked, but after the reboot it says that bootloader is locked... 😩
