Frogging knitting, which is jargon for unravelling your knitting, is a frustrating but necessary rite of passage for every knitter. Knitting mistakes are bound to happen, and sometimes the only way forward is to unravel the knitting and start again.
It can be painful to watch all those beautiful stitches disappear with a simple tug. But once you’ve ripped back your knitting, a trickier situation arises: now that your stitches are loose, how will you put them back on the needle? Just jam them back on, willy-nilly? Absolutely not! There’s a right way and a wrong way to unravel your knitting. In this video, we’ll go over three ways to frog knitting.
** DID YOU KNOW? **
Knitters call unravelling “frogging” because it’s descriptive of what happens to your kitting: “rip it, rip it, rip it,” which sounds an awful lot like the sound that a frog makes: “ribbit, ribbit, ribbit.” Get it? Not the wittiest pun, but it’s stuck, and is now part of modern knitting vernacular.

Thank you so, so much for your video. I am in the process of making a blanket for a co-worker who is retiring. About 26 inches in I made a BIG mistake and wasn’t sure how to fix it. In the past, I would have ripped the whole thing out but I just couldn’t bring myself to do that. I found your video and using the third method I successfully ripped out about 4 rows of knitting. This has been the single most helpful knitting video I've seen ... and maybe not for the reason you think. I've just recently moved from crocheting to a round knitting machine and I'd been having difficulty understanding the anatomy of the stitches, so I could never understand why other vids would say things like "pick up every other one" ... but with this video you made the picture so freakin' clear to me! Talk about lightbulbs ... wow. Thank you so much! Also, the whole reason I searched for a video like this was because I'd done like 45 rounds too many for a project and didn't even realize until i'd closed the tube and was trying to attach it. *headdesk* I didn't want to rip the whole thing out and start over, just wanted to rip out the rows i didn't need, and couldn't think of a way to stop stitches from dropping. So this video helped in at least 2 ways. Thank you so much for the video and for being so clear with your information!

This is a game changer! I learnt the basics as a kid but never continued as I would make mistakes & couldn’t see how to undo them.. I never ‘understood the stitches’ if that makes sense! Now I’m not afraid of starting a project because if it goes wrong I should now be able to rescue it!

You are a wonderful teacher! I was able to use your 3rd method to take out 8 rows of tiny size 2 needle stitches without dropping or twisting any! Sheep & Stitch ~ I can't thank you enough!

Thank you so much! I have had difficulty with the right and wrong side of stitches as well as ripping off as I'm working on a new pattern.

Thank you for explaining how to unravel and save stitches! Nobody ever explained how to exactly do that. Once I understood the anatomy of the stitch it made sense to pick up the right leg! Fingers crossed as I'm doing this method to add length to a sweater I'm working on.

Method number three is a life saver. I was on the back side of a small stitch sweater when I made a huger error and did not catch it for 4 rows. It was still hard but Method three made is possible. Thank you!

I looked through so many videos trying to figure out how to get my knitting back on my needle the right way after ripping out a mistake. NO ONE ELSE EXPLAINED EXACTLY HOW TO PICK UP THE STITCHES CORRECTLY SO THEY’RE NOT TWISTED! Thank you so much for your clear demonstration and explanation! I’m making a Christmas stocking for a family member because my mom passed away after making them for about 200 family members over the years, kids, grands, greatgrands, cousins, second cousins, their kids and grandkids, etc. I’ve never been much of a knitter and have really struggled with each stitch, changing colors, bobbins, etc. I was horrified to notice a huge mistake several rows back! So I ripped out the rows but then wasn’t sure how to get the stitches back on the needle. I tried it a couple of times but it didn’t seem right. Thank you so much for showing me the right way to do it! You saved this family heirloom!!

Your knitting tutorials are really good and you explain things very well. I come to you a lot! You are just a wee bit West-Coasty "Awesome!" sometimes...but hey, I grew up in Portland, Oregon, myself. I probably wouldn't even notice it if I hadn't been living in England for the past sixteen years. Just teasing you a tiny bit - really, you are actually Awesome and thank you SO MUCH for your tutorials!
