How to use a Lowrance - Backlight not working

Thanks for sharing! This was driving me insane out on the lake on sunny days. Had to get on all fours with a towel over my head like an idiot to see the screen well enough to get to the brightness setting!

I have the original Elite -4X on my 2008 Tracker. I couldn't see the screen either. Even the manual was hard to understand. Thanks for the video.

I just purchased the Hook Reveal 7 and was using it in a tournament for the first time yesterday. With about two hours left the screen just went dark. I didn’t touch anything to make it go dark. I tried hitting the power button to get the brightness up, but nothing. I rebooted twice and saw the Hook Reveal logo, but it would go right back to a dark screen. I tried hitting the power and enter buttons, but nothing, so just held the power button to shut it off. Today when I turned it on, it is back to normal. My question is, why did it just go dark in the first place when I didn’t do anything? Secondly, why couldn’t I adjust the brightness at the time, but now it is fine? Thank you for any advice you can give me.

Thanks for the vid. My display went dim and hitting the power button didn't seem to help it any. Maybe I didn't hit it fast enough. The brightness was set at 100 percent. I did go into night mode and turned it on and off and it fixed the problem.

Happens to alot of us evidently, I thought I was powering off like you said, but I wasn't doing it correctly, I was hitting the power button, going over to power and instead of hitting the enter button, I was hitting the power button three times for some dumb reason and thinking it was powering off and all it was doing was dimming the screen. Any way this video solves it and thanks so much for these great tutorials!

I have 2 HDS5's on my boat (yes, they are dinosaurs, but it's all I can afford) and one of the screens is nice and bright and I can see everything even in bright sunshine. But the other isn't even close, and hard to see in sunny conditions. I am aware that pushing the power button changes the backlight but even on high, it pales in comparison to the front HDS5. So do the screens just go bad over time and start to fade away? Second question; among my pile of hand me down fishfinders, is a LMS 520c and a LMS 332, both having the same size screen as the HDS5's. Are the screens basically the same? Can I switch out a brighter screen for the dull one?

I actually still have an old HDS 5 as a back up display and it works great still somehow. The screens don't typically fade out like that. Unfortunately you can't swap out screen between displays. Aside from the fact that it's a different type of screen on the HDS, they are pressure sealed and if u broke one open, it would potentially get moisture inside and rust out the components.

Any ideas if your unit doesn't power on at all. It doesn't make a beep or doesn't show a logo at all. I know I have good voltage, measured 12.95V at the plug. I've submitted a contact request with Lowrance but always up for information. Thank you!

You need to turn off your structure overlay on the chart screen. On the menu to the right, you will see the option for overlay. Change it to OFF.

That's usually a power issue. I would check your voltage first. Set up an overlay for it.

If every screen is black and white, even your charts, then I would suggest doing a soft reset on it. Press and hold the Pages button and then turn the display on and continue to hold the Pages button until it makes a double chirp sound.
