Sir, you convinced me on this unit. You did a good review, and the fact that you have (or had since it has been 4 years), the same boat as me really swayed me. On another note, either you were running on fumes or your gas level sensor failed like mine did. Fixing that was a pain. Thanks again.

The gas sensor ended up failing. I had to repair it. Yes, not fun or easy at all!!

I am deciding between the piranha 4di and the helix 5, Which one has done better? And why? I also don’t need gps so not paying extra for it.

Heck yeah!! Just bought a mint Bayliner needs a cleaning but came stocked with new things. Among them a new humminbird 4di. 500 bucks with matching trailer. Your video was best I found to encourage me to keep it on the boat. Long as it works great at lower speeds, should be fine. Awesome vid n info. Keep up the great work man!! 😎

Try lowering the transducer 1/2 inch. At 30+, the boat is probably getting a little too high for the current transducer location.

Just got one to replace my old 170 Humminbird, which had a melted transducer…..I mainly troll for white bass and never go over 30 so this fits my needs for sure. Mainly want to depth and marking the drop offs. Now in my big boat i do go well over 30 but have a dedicated depth reader in it.

Excellent job on describing the only 2 negatives which took 7 of the 8 mins. Wish i could have seen more about the positive things about the unit. Just my opinion. Want more subscribers. Need a equal balance of the positive and negative of whatever you are reviewing.

Just got a used boat with this sonar and I get the same issues with the choppy image when I go over 30mph but at 20 or 25 it works fine. It doesn't really bother me to much but it would be nice to be able to see stuff at higher speed. The down image is kinda cool it allows you to see structure and snags while trolling nice and slow...I'm going to upgrade to a bit bigger unit this next spring but for now it'll work.

Thanks for watching and commenting. I was told that I could eliminate the choppy image of I move my transducer further away from the motor. Haven’t tried that yet. But if I do and it works I’ll update.

Mine does it too. I'd be frustrated if the transducer location was to blame. It was factory-installed or marina installed. Came in a brand new boat. I'd love to hear if anybody else has relocated it with positive results.

I have the same one. Mine don't do that at high speeds. But i found in the operations manual that if thus happens the transducer needs to be adjusted. Also says there could be air or turbulence in the transducer location caused by rivets, ribs, ect.

Yes, it has been moved and no longer does this. I wish I had known before the I did the video. I still use it to this day. It’s a good fish finder.

If high speed readings is what you want the cheapest route would be to buy a second max4 without di and it has the high speed transducer , hook up both units and you could view 2d and di side by each gives a better interpretation

Sonar transducers must be submerged in order to work right. I'm guessing your transducer is mounted to the back of your boat. At higher speed, bubbles of air will be rolling under your boat. This causes foamy air pockets under the transducer.... Thus, things go crazy on the screen. If you are good at 30mph, you are doing pretty good! I loose mine right after I get on plane.

Ty for the review. I'm a little surprised that this unit doesn't have any fish alarms or fish icon/arch marks. Also no option to have the depth placed over the fish? Is mine a lemon or do they not offer this with the 4Di? Ty

I have the same problems at high speeds. Mine also cuts out at around 30mph. I have tried relocating my transducer with no luck.

TheDude same. I’m at the point where I think that it just is not meant for high speeds. Oh well, it works great otherwise!

I had the same problem with mine but I forgot to remove the protective plastic membrane on the transducer , I haven’t been out to see if that was the problem but check your transducer

I enjoy using it. I think it’s accurate in what it is showing. Just not at high speeds. I thought it was the best one in its price range compared to other brands. Yes I think it is worth the price. Thanks for the question and support to my channel.

Ok, hearing it doesn't give me down image accurately at high speeds, my boat at the max goes 25, will it still give me accurate depth? Granted I rarely go that fast. How well does it read in muddy water? Likely looking to replace my old finder with something like this. Thanks

It gives accurate depth. I works 💯 on my kayak. But like I said in the video “who tries to find fish at 30 plus mph”. I like it. It does good in muddy water for me. Our lake here stays muddy.

I don’t. Just testing it out. I actually stated in the video at one point something like “who needs to be looking for fish at 30 mph”.

fish sammich the size and shape of an imaging transducer do not play well with high speed , the turbulence and such messes with the return, guys who run higher end units will put a thru haul transducer or a plain 2d high speed run a splitter cable so they can have the 2 transducer hooked up and that will give the better return at speed ,

Great video! Saw your pt 1&2 and was thinking of getting one to replace my old one and it was transom mounted but yah your right on running it at high speed they are usally for trolling no wake speeds why? Cause you would scare the fish away if you go to fast and stopped to fish they be gone after they would register on unit, lol. The only way to register it without disturbance through high speeds is get a transducer to mount that would register through the floor mount of the boat but those are more expensive units im sure.

FunInVa I had an existing unit so I just followed the wires and ran it to the same places that the old unit wires went to. After I removed the old unit and wires. Thanks, the screen is not bad at all for the price!

You need to adjust your transducer. The speed of sound in water is 4800 feet per second and no boat goes that fast. I used to do a lot of tournament fishing and the placement of your transducer is causing your problems.

Would it be the angle the transducer is sitting at. Or move it all together. It’s sitting below the bottom of the boat ever so slightly off the transom. It’s level. Don’t know much about them.

I have taken everyone’s advice about the transducer. I have not moved it yet because it’s winter and the boat is completely covered. As the weather warms I will move it and see what works. If the problem is fixed for me I’ll make a follow up video.

Yes, I did. This unit is now on my kayak because I eventually sold my boat. It works very well.

It could be. This is something I need to look into. I haven’t taken the boat out for awhile. It’s winter here now. But thank you for this. I will consider this when I start trying to figure out if I can solve the problem.

Great video man I've got same unit but mine completely shuts down when I get on plane I go to turn it back on while I'm still driving and it just goes all over the place on reading is my transducer to high or what is the issue I'm having

I wish I could answer that for you. With the problem I had in the video others have commented telling me to move the transducer down and further from the motor. I haven’t had a chance to do that yet.

Clapped Yuh I took it out in a rain storm. Got wet for at least an hour straight. Took it home, dried it off, still works great.

I fish mine on a Jon Boat so it’s always getting splashed on with the huge fish I’m dragging over it. 😉 If it’s going to be in a wetter than average environment Humminbird recommends dielectric grease on the wire connections. I would personally recommend doing this frequently if you’re at all removing the wires.

I would recommend Down scan. You get a more detailed image of what is under you. You can actually tell if there are rock piles, trees, things like that with DI.

I have this same unit and I like it, my settings have never reseted on there on. Got mine so I can find the specks(crappie). Have picked up fish on the sonar. What I'm havin' trouble learning the sonar is when I'm anchored up or not movin' why does the sonar still move to the left on the screen? When you get that reading I would think it stops unless you move. Dunno I'm not a pro at usin' a fishfinder but am learnin'. And it does help findin' the specks for sure since they go deep. Wish there was a video that really dug deep into how it works and what to notice on this Hummingbird model.

The sonar stays “moving” because it’s continually reading the area you are stopped in. So it’s just basically a continuous scan of that area where you are anchored. But yes, I wish there was a very in depth video also because I do not fully understand it either. Thanks for the comment and watch time! Much appreciated.

Looks like HB says it's max speed for viable results is 30 mph and recommends speeds of 1-6 mph for best results.

It’s not a glitch. It’s rated for 5 mph. It’s a low end unit.

My 570 did the same. Got multimeter and found out that when I put the boat up I always turn off the breakers before connecting charger. It was cutting the power to my 570. Long story short check that you have constant 12v connected to the unit. It should keep your unit from resetting. Hope this helps.

It might be the transducer also. Make sure it is level and far enough away from the motor to lesson the vibration it might get.

I stated that in the video. I was testing it out at low and high speeds. Then I said “who looks for fish at those speeds anyway”. It’s a review/demo video. So I wanted to cover as much as possible.

I’m not sure if this salt water rated. I live in Oklahoma. No salt water here. But I can try and look into it. Deepest part in the lake here that I’ve read on this fish finder is 53 feet deep. I’ll see if I can find out some things for you.

@@cudahunterph Depth-Sonar 320 ft (20) 455 kHz, 600 ft (20) 200 kHz Down imaging depth is 320 ft. I cannot find anything that says it’s ok to use in salt water. But I do not see anything saying you can’t. This is straight from the owners manual.

If you would mount your transducer in the back and in the bottom of your boat with silicone, i dont think youll have that problem

In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens kzfaq.infoUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.

It’s a review video. I was covering everything I could think of. You don’t just go over the good things on a review video. You give the good and the bad that you have experienced with the product. What you call gripping is odd to me. I don’t feel I was gripping. Just going over everything I could think of. I would assume most people would be pleased with that. I’m not trying to paint an excellent picture of something that’s not excellent. Not crying either. But I do thank you for your watch time and leaving a comment. I hope you enjoy this fish finder if you purchase it.

If you watched my video in its entirety you would have heard me say “who needs to look for fish at 30 mph”. This is a review and a test video. So I wanted to cover as much as I could. Not everyone who owns a boat wants to speed 900 mph. So you got that wrong.
