Glad I watched. Didn't know you should put it on the wood before starting it. Be mindful that an 80 grit will take a lot of material off really quickly. Looks like he never lets it sit in one spot and keeps it moving. I did read if you're not careful, you can get the swirly pigtails you won't really notice until staining.

Regarding the sandpaper just flying off -- actually, if you have the RO sander long enough, it probably WILL start flying off of the pad very regularly. Even cleaning off the loops on the pad won't work. The fix for that is to simply buy a new pad. The pad is considered a degradable part and so replacing them is easy and inexpensive. And after doing so, the sandpaper will stick like new, again.

NASA (and the police) said I couldn't do "any more orbital" since the painters got me to try some kind of drink they made from acetone & laquer thinner... What? Different kinda orbital? Thank God... no bail money... Always enjoy your videos and no matter if you're new to these tools or a seasoned pro doing things right & safely is a good thing! (Old timers: a 'refresher' video is a good thing since if you pick up just one small tip then that's one tip you're ahead of the game... never stop learning. Ever.)

I bought a Makita, then exchanged it for another one because the spinning stops when in contact with the wood. I thought it was a bad one but the replacement sander does the same thing. I do NOT press that hard when contacting the wood. In this video your sander keeps spinning when contacting the wood. What am I doing wrong or is Makita a bad one? Thanks.

Thanks for this helpful content, I borrowed this random orbital sander it works well while i grap it touching wood surface, but once I leave it on wood, it stops rotating. Furthermore, I can't apply any pressure while sanding. Is this normal or something wrong with this sander.
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 3 ай бұрын
Ah that is a good observation, That is completely normal, once there is some slight pressure it is not spinning it is using a random orbital motion and appears like it stopped moving to the eye.

Shannon did you forget that some sanders now have slow start to prevent swirl marks ? A person should know this when purchasing a sander.

I've seen a lot of circular scratches due to the orbital sanders, is there anyway to stop those? Even moving it with the grain of the wood didn't help.
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 7 жыл бұрын
when sanding, work down to finer sand paper as you go and do not push down on sander let it do the work. You will not get rid of all of them but they will usually be so fine they are not to visible.

The problem I have with my ROS is when turned on it works great until I place it onto the work surface, any pressure at all it actually stops the sander from spinning. Any ideas?
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 4 жыл бұрын
You really do not need to apply barely any pressure. If it stalls with minor pressure there is some kind of problem and I would assume it is shot.

Nice vid, thx. Unfortunately most of the issues yopu addressed I already knew and one burning question remains unanswered: Most sanders I know have a variable speed, but when do you select high speed and when low speed?
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 7 жыл бұрын
I have not seen a orbital with speed selection? If you have lists of wood to get rid of I guess use the faster setting and slow down when you get to the finishing passes? I'm not 100% sure.

Yea, this was the only question I was left with too. The problem with experienced people making how-to videos is that they take a lot of stuff for granted, like this, because they're so used to using the product. I think the best way to make videos like this is to have an absolute noob in the studio, and give them the product and let them screw up, and then answer their questions..
