one of the most common template i made and use in almost every house i trim is the one needed for the switch plate that goes into a jamb of a prehung door that has a switch to turn on lights when opened. this is a very well done presentation for using guide bushings. thanks again. Andy

I found this video looking for how and ways to use the B&D router guide I bought to use with B&D router. I have to admit I just wasn't getting what the heck Ron was doing until the end. And then I realized all the uses for his generic template. Though it didn't help me with the use of the router guide, it did give me a way to use the router for a project I have. THANKS RON!

I've had the chance to use this table a couple of times now. It's fun to whip out in front of people:) I can see what people are talking about when they say the legs are delicate, but they're design to support a "mostly" vertical load, not be torqued from the side or pushed back into place. If you just let the table open or close on it's own and don't force anything, it works great kzfaq.infoUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh Once it's set up, it's pretty solid. My only gripe would probably be related to the clamps provided. They're not the highest quality. They do the job, so no big deal, but they could be better. All in all, pretty cool gadget.

What are the black supports that at hold up the side supports on your kapex? They don’t look like standard Festool supports Mine are metal.

I think it's important to mention to take into account the size of the guide bushing when making the template. Typically you need to make it either a tad larger or smaller, depending on if you're routing inside or outside, to achieve accurate final dimension.

The only reason I clicked on this video to find out how to account for offset.

I noticed when some people use a template like this the holes they cut are rounded on the ends and some are square, like yours, on the end. What explains the difference?
@crgmrgn8 жыл бұрын
Most important step ... remember to clearly label the pattern purpose and also bit size/dimensions, saves a lot of wasted time in future months/years, Sharpie visibly on the outside and again in the recess is handy as the exterior will invariably take a bashing and wear off in storage.

This is fabulous, I found a tutorial how to use the router from Mr Paulk himself! I was trying to build the workbench and was like how the heck am I going to use this router I just bought, guess I'll have to cut the legs out individually... not anymore!' Thank you!

Can I use a compact router to make this???
@TheSmartWoodshop Жыл бұрын
Sure, I do often although I prefer ½" (12mm) bits and most compact routers are limited to ¼" (6mm) or there about.
@Vanadeo7 жыл бұрын
As a newb to routers does this mean that you can use the template guide instead of buying a bit with a bearing ontop of it? ... if you know what I mean...
@TheSmartWoodshop7 жыл бұрын
That is exactly what it means. A templet guide allows you to use a standard straight cut, or a spiral bit. It is my preferred method, though it requires an adjustment to the templet size to account for the offset of the bit.
@Vanadeo7 жыл бұрын
Ron Paulk okay cool, thak you man. I was looking at pictures of template guides and noticed that there would be an offset..
@ccccen7 жыл бұрын
Don't forget that you lose an amount do to the template piece you use. I'm using the smallest and closes not to make it smaller than need to be. For a circle I'm losing 3/16 out of a 3'' hole due to the space of the fitting I'm using.
@ThekiBoran6 жыл бұрын
Vanadeo Generally for routing the edge of a board I use a router bit with a guide bearing. For mortising guide bushings and templates are super cool. A heads up for anyone buying a Festool router, especially the OF1400. Get a centering mandrel when you buy that router. Install a 3/8" to 3/4" guide bushing and the centering mandrel and check to see if it is centered in the guide bushing. Make sure your guide bushing is perfectly round as well. If the mandrel isn't centered take it back immediately and get another one. With Festool and the OF1400 there's no way to adjust it unlike other affordable routers. Make sure to check for defects within the 30-day period after purchase. Customer service at Festool is not as good as many say it is. Some defects Festool will not repair and they will not replace it even if it's still under warranty. Caveat emptor, (let the buyer beware).

Hi Ron great vids..I am looking for a replacement table saw.. what model is yours and what do you like about it, would you recommend it. I cut mainly baltic birch plywood 1/8"- 3/4" for my cajon drum/ box drum biz. I currrently am using two Ryobi precision cutting system tables set up for single job on each, i want to retire one. so I am on the hunt.. thank you ahead for any reply and info.. j.

machudocajons There is a good video of table saw comparison by Rob Robilard (sp?), I think it's tool box buzz/Concord Carpenter. Most of his videos are kinda clunky and not informative but the table saw comparison is really good. Personally, if I was in the market for a portable/jobsite saw I'd get the Saw Stop. I've used both the portable and the full size cabinet saw and they are nice plus there's the safety factor. However, the forman on our job was ripping some MDF and it triggered the safety mechanism. Scared the you know what out of him. The safety feature can be bypassed if you are ripping wet/moist stock.

Why does my guide bushings keep getting destroyed by my router bit? Am I using too large of a bit?
@murphyrp012 жыл бұрын
Have had the same problem. For instance using a 3/8” bushing and a 1/4 upcut spiral bit to get the 1/8” offset there is very little clearance between the bit and the bush. So if the bushing comes loose or the adapter plate then the bit touches the bush and damage occurs. I would think an offset of 3/16” or 1/4” for templates would give the router some extra clearance and reduce the chance of damage.

But how do I attach the guide???
@TheSmartWoodshop Жыл бұрын
You can use double-stick tape, screws, or pins. I use 18 gauge pins and pull them through the backside with side cutters when done.

This is really just an explanation how router bushes are used; there is no actual demonstration of using a router guide as such that would give a viewer any idea as to how the router bit or template guide is being used. A picture, or in this case a video, of what the process is all about is worth a thousand words. This particular video is obviously aimed at woodworkers who have a good knowledge or router bits and how the router works and not for the novice.
@MrStringybark6 жыл бұрын
I appreciate that you went to a lot of effort to make this video. The problem for me is that you talk so much that the video becomes convoluted and unnecessarily over complicated. It would be better if you just wrote it all down rather than filming yourself talking as if in a classroom. I watch videos as they're easier for me to follow because I can watch someone doing the woodworking with a voiceover usually while showing on screen what they are talking about.
@KungFuMojo8 жыл бұрын
Man, I'm a little slow. I still don't understand the relationship, or why the template guide is necessary. Why couldn't you run that router without the guide?
@TheSmartWoodshop8 жыл бұрын
Without the template guide, the router bit will cut into the template.
