If you disable automatic latency compensation in ReaInsert and use the "ping detect" button to manually calibrate it, you get VERY accurate latency compensation, to the point where I've used Reaper's built in wet/dry control for parallel compression with a hardware compressor without phase issues. It works really well, but you have to remember to set your record source to output WITHOUTlatency compensation (since ReaInsert is already handling that as plugin latency compensation) when you're printing it, otherwise you get ReaInsert's compensation AND additional compensation according to your settings in preferences/recording and you end up with audio that's actually too early.

Hi. Nice video, believe however you should show physical connections from/to computer/converters/outboard/console

good idea.. that is a thing rarely covered in videos... just the results;

Reainsert can send a signal from between the plugin chain in your insert. That's what it's meant for.

I'm going to set up my 32 channel Soundcraft Ghost console for old school tracking, and use Reaper as a tape machine. The Ghost mic pres are incredible.

You can have left and right send set to same output and input, no need for all that, and another thing, you have to PING (bottom of reaInsert plugin)you outboard gear to detect how many samples of delays Reaper has to apply. Like this you dont have delay signal from source to post outboard.

Hi, I have a question wonder could you help, we have a vocal track which was recorded via ProTools, an SE RNT mic & a Apogee Quartet interface. Is there any easy way we can print this back in but through our new Analoge Addicts 1960 preamp? Kind regards Paul

You can also just put the left and right channel to the same output, and have the return left right the same channel!

Hi there. After a year or so of watching your content, I feel it is time to say thank you! I Produce, Mix and Master my own music to a standard that is nowhere near as good as I would like it to be. You have helped me at least approach what I would like to consider a reasonable standard (along with "MIxbus TV"). If I could afford to fund you on Patreon, I would, but unfortunately I am unemployed and cannot. I would still like to ask a cheeky request however... In your next upload, could you please use "Sandstorm", by "Darude" in your video, as I think that would be a great song to help illustrate your work... Keep up the good work :)

I guess the main advantage of Re-insert is you could put the hardware insert between two plugins?

Hi Wytse, super helpful video, thx! Is there a diffrence how you use hardware on the master?

in Protools did you use Hardware inserts or "normal" routing (outputs to hardware and then print to new channels) ? If not hardware inserts (that you can insert the delay manually) how did you manage the latency issues?

Can you make a video with one or multiple channels and A/B them digital/Analog (just a console passthrough) with loudness compensation in RMS? Would be really interesting to make people really hear the magic of the analog equipment.

Great video! What is your opinion about dither in these cases? I ALWAYS use dither when it comes to an external output, since the Reaper mixer works at 64 bits floating point and the outputs of any interface are 24 (or 32) fixed point, so we need a "translator" between those protocols (floating - fixed), and the dither noise that prevents quantization error distortion (horrible distortion). I have made A-B comparisons with closed eyes and the change is really heard (definition, depth, texture, etc.). I would like to know what you think about it, because I agree a lot on all your concepts. Greet warmly from Argentina (sorry for my bad English) Leandro!

When I use rea insert and render a track with my hardware reverb, reaper creates a new track for me only with the reverb information, so then I have two tracks, the original without reverb and a track that only contains the reverb effect, this is normal? What happens in the case of a compressor? ocurrs the same? I'll appreciate your answer

that's a simple great video. I'm going deep in OTB mixing, and now exclusively using Reaper . That would be great to follow your next videos. By the way: when you do that routing trick at 3:44 don't you have any latency issues? I mean, can we experiment mixing/listening along with the other tracks without having to print it first? Thanks
