I built a covered deck and use that same deck board for hand rail cap, rail skirts ceiling and ceiling/deck. I pop some blue lines on the treated and they will not disappear even after a year. Standard chalk, not dye. You did a good job well done
@BenVanKirk
@BenVanKirk 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! I haven't figured out what I will do for a hand rail cap yet but I like the idea of using a deck board for a nice finished look. I have not had the blue lines stain the wood to my knowledge, but I will for sure be hesitant when using the chalk line in the future.

You may know this, but for those who don't, camo makes a tool that helps to bend the boards straight.

Very good! I was looking for how “hidden” these fasteners were and looks good.

They are very hidden and work really great. I have had some in place for over 2 years now and my stairs and deck are still rock solid. Thanks for watching.

Very well-produced video here. If you keep up the same quality I think you'll end up with a decent amount of subscribers. A lot of DIY videos have horrible volume fluctuations and bad video quality. Good job.

Over all, it came out to be a nice deck. I would agree that having a typical butt joint is better in this case, because you have such a small area to cut. Sometimes the ends will warp worse when they are that small.

With the composit the srews are not so much hidden but still way better then hole threw the top.its a fantastic system be nicer if you could get the screw at least 1/16 atleast lower for trex. And you need to make shour the tool is clèen of composite debree and as flat to board every screw with trex
@BenVanKirk
@BenVanKirk 2 жыл бұрын
Great point Linda! You do need to keep the tool clean of debris. Some composite is grooved and will not need hidden fasteners but this is a better option for composite edge boards when applying a picture frame edge.

Is it really necessary to place a gap or tighten in between the decking boards with my bowrench?

Absolutely! Whatever you decide... keep it consistent for a great look.

That's a pretty cool tool. Too bad we can't use it on the coastal areas. Heavy storms, hurricanes tend to rip out shallow holds like that.
@BenVanKirk
@BenVanKirk 2 жыл бұрын
Oh wow! I haven't had any issues and these things are holding strong after a year. I have been really impressed with this product. They do have a shallower hold but since they are angled in at each side, they actually grab a lot of meat.

Darn! We had a lake cabin years ago and I wish we had done a deck like yours......would have been 10x nicer than using the dock as our deck!
@BenVanKirk
@BenVanKirk 2 жыл бұрын
I was hesitant to build that deck, we are not sure how much use it will get but wanted the option. Do you have any pointers for keeping things on the dock, tables/chairs etc..., so they won't blow away in a storm?
@CdA_Native
@CdA_Native 2 жыл бұрын
@@BenVanKirk If you don't want to screw them to the deck, I've had some success with "sand tubes" also called "sand baggies!".... just lay them over cross members, or even hang them under lightweight chairs or tables. Not pretty, but pretty effective!

Thanks for the video. Can we use any brand of screw instead of the camo screws?
@BenVanKirk
@BenVanKirk Жыл бұрын
@jassonsmith7941 I would recommend using the camo screws with this system. They are specifically designed to work with the jig and are cross threaded to ensure a strong hold. They didn't crack the boards and are not really much more expensive than other quality deck screws.

I don't get the whole picture frame framing method. The deck boards end on nothing, I get that the picture frame is supported and that the deck boards get screwed down a few inches back but still the very end of the boards will be prone to lifting. Why not place a 2x4 on edge inside the rim band and then add another joist next to it. Wouldn't that work?
@BenVanKirk
@BenVanKirk 12 күн бұрын
That would work too. A 2x4 on edge is more area for moisture to collect. Also, since the blocking was cut from scraps this method is a little cheaper. I haven't had any issue with the picture frame boards lifting on the edges, they only over hang about an inch. Thanks for watchin!

The issue that prevented me from using this Camo system is the cost of the screw. Home Depot sells Camo screw around $100 for 200 pcs. I can buy 1200 deck screws for $50.
@BenVanKirk

They are a little more expensive. Mine have held up well and I do enjoy the hidden look the provide.

How well does the camo work with composite decking?
@BenVanKirk
@BenVanKirk 2 ай бұрын
I think it would work ok, but composite decking typically has a groove in the side for hidden fasteners that go between each board
