Hey so I know this the wrong video to reply to but I’m hoping you would have some insight. I have an 03 rs6 and the line to the oil/transmission cooler is cracked. I was quoted $3400 to replace the oil/transmission cooler and the 4 lines coming in/out of it since they are rusted. Is this an expensive part? Is the labor something really difficult to do? Hoping since you work on that RS6 you might be able to help.

Hey there! It's not a job I've done TBH, and not one that I would be keen to do either. I'm not sure of the exact process without delving into the workshop software for each pipe, but I know on the S4 (for example) you have to remove driveshafts and likely drop the subframe etc, but nothing too drastic - but that's a simpler car. The parts will not be cheap. Those four lines will likely be $150-$300 each, and the oil cooler is an expensive piece of kit. You should ask them for a break down between parts and labour so you can get a feel what you are paying for. The lines will be genuine only for sure, but you MAY be able to get a non-genuine oil cooler which could save a fair bit. And ask them how involved the process is, and what the job entails. Seems expensive to me, but I have a feeling the parts will make up a good % of that total. It could be done DIY if you are competent, but would not be a nice job and you'd want a ramp really as lots of back and forwards between various locations to get different angles etc and so would be a nightmare on axlestands. Still possible though. Shame all 4 need to be replaced, but if you are doing the job best to do them all just in case. You might be able to find the pipes used in good condition on eBay. Just ensure they are completely rust free, otherwise it's a backwards step. But I've seen VERY clean oil pipes coming off of RS6's before that I'd happily re-use, so they do exist. Best of luck, and keep us posted! --- To help support us (for both you and others reading this) there are a few things you can do: 1) Please ensure you subscribe to our KZfaq channel. 2) Please give our video's the Thumbs Up on KZfaq. 3) Please help spread the word, the more people who know about us the better! Hi I just watched this as I’m trying to find answers .... I just got my car back from a b service , and they score parts in a red , amber , and green, my antifreeze came back as amber (-15*c) ...... I live in the uk . So my first question really is , as this was an amber reading , how do I get it back in the green ? And is the antifreeze /coolant change not part of a service? Any helpful advice is much appreciated. Thanks
@TotalTechnik
@TotalTechnik 3 жыл бұрын
Hey there!, So firstly, no the antifreeze change it not necessarily included in the A or B service so that is quite normal. To get it back up to -20C protection, you simply need to top it up with some neat coolant that is compatible with what's in there already. It won't take much. Then just drive the car for a day or two to ensure the coolant has completely gone around the system, and check it again (using a tool like the one in this video). -15C is 'probably' pretty safe for the UK, it VERY rarely gets anywhere that cold, but -20C is a safe ground and good to aim for just to be safe. --- To help support us (for both you and others reading this) there are a few things you can do: 1) Donations both needed and welcome! Is this tester suitable for both red and blue concentrate anti-freeze? They are different alcohol based products so will have a different specific gravity to each other. We use red concentrate.
@TotalTechnik
@TotalTechnik 4 жыл бұрын
Hey there! In this video we are using a tester from Sealy. They make two versions, one for Ethylene Glycol based coolants, and another for Propylene Glycol. Just check what type of coolant you have in your car, and get the corresponding one. The colour of the coolant is not always the deciding factor as a few manufactuers of coolant like to play with colours, it's more what it's made of. --- To help support us (for both you and others reading this) there are a few things you can do: 1) Donations both needed and welcome! @TotalTechnik
@TotalTechnik 4 жыл бұрын
Hey there! If you have the exact same one, then 4 discs floating is protection down to -31C. That should be ideal for Germany I would expect. Take a look at the sticker on the side with the chart, it says the number of floating discs, and says 4 discs (floating) is -31C. i have the same tester but actually it was hard to understand your explication, for example on my tester the white disc was the only one floating, could you please tell me what is the right read for that diagnosis? thank you
@TotalTechnik
@TotalTechnik 5 жыл бұрын
Hey there! Well, they do vary a bit from tester to tester so you should always go by the instructions/key printed on the side of the tester. But assuming you have the same tester as this one, as you mentioned... The number of discs that float tell you how good the coolant is. For the UK we need protection for at least -20C. So for us we need to see our tester floating at least three discs. It can vary country to country on what your target figure is. Some countries are much colder than the UK and so will need more protection (more coolant to water mix). If you only have one disc floating, as you can see on the side of the tester, this is only giving protection to -7C. This is not enough for the majority of countries. So, your coolant needs to be changed if only one disc is floating. This could be because either the mix is too weak, or you have a leak and have been topping it up with just water, or the coolant is quite old and becoming not effective anymore. Either way, you should change that ASAP before the cold weather really hits hard. Total Technik So it means that always the number of disc floating will have to be on the top of the tester right? I was confused about that. Thank you for your answer
@TotalTechnik
@TotalTechnik 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is correct. The key on the side refers to how many discs float. One disc floating is not enough, and would indicate a coolant change is needed. --- To help support us (for both you and others reading this) there are a few things you can do: 1) Donations both needed and welcome! Just take a sample of coolant out of the radiator put it in a plastic cap then put it in the freezer for 24 hours if it doesn't freeze it's ok if it does then change it simple
@TotalTechnik
@TotalTechnik 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the theory is very sound indeed, depending on your freezer settings of course. However mixing food and antifreeze is not a good idea as it's extremely toxic. And you need 24 hours spare too. Is your tool identical to this one? The important part is how many discs float, and the key to what that means will be printed on the side of the tool. Just reference how many floating discs you have against the key, and that will tell you the level of protection that the coolant has. What happens if u have six discs floating
@TotalTechnik
@TotalTechnik Жыл бұрын
As per the key on the side of the tool, six discs floating is not safe to use if standard coolant. That would be a really, really rich mix, almost like concentrated coolant has been used neat. Or a possible issue or comtamination. You shoudl definitely investigate this further if you have six discs floating. You should check the scale on the side of the tester, but assuming it's the same as this one then 5 is a lot! That shows a very high level of coolant to water, but is still within the 'safe' zone (which is 6 floating discs) so you should be fine. You don't need it that strong for the UK generally, but as long as it's still showing in the 'safe' zone on your scale then you'll be a-ok! Better to have a too-rich mix than a too-lean one!! --- To help support us (for both you and others reading this) there are a few things you can do: 1) Donations both needed and welcome! I don't know why people think that when they check the coolant in the reservoir that they're getting an accurate reading on what is actually in the cooling system. You could have a 75% mix of antifreeze in the reservoir and the actual radiator could be much weaker. You need to check it in the radiator. The cooling system doesn't circulate coolant through the reservoir.
