Well credit due for writing that. It's tough for any of us to admit that we were the problem. In fairness, there is any issue when so many people have exactly the same experience. Garmin could fix this very easily by pushing a quick-start video to Basecamp along these lines, but to be fair, even then, some people won't watch it. And for the record, I learnt the hard way. I used to plan all my routes using just waypoints.

Thank you for this. Your effort is much appreciated. Has to be said though, Basecamp is absurdly cumbersome and outdated. Time for a MAJOR overhaul Garmin.

I live in Japan, and was looking for a lesson in basecamp, I have just bought a F900XR and has a mount for a Garmin, so I have found my old zumo. I now watch, and see you are off to Skipton, I lived 3 miles from Skipton for over 10 years, little village called Cononley...amazing

Thank you. So glad I found this video of yours. Am planning routes for my next trip using 'via' points and will see how it goes. Hoping there will be no fighting between my partner and I over which is wrong - the route or the gps 😊
@jtchivers
@jtchivers Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Janine and good luck with your route! Easy way to remember it: Via points are places you definitely want to route through. Shaping points are places you'd prefer to route through. Waypoints are favourites. The GPS WILL take you to a via point unless you tell it to skip it when it's coming up as the next one on the route, but if you miss a shaping point, it will just figure out a way to the next via point. You can create a route using just via and shaping points. No need to create any waypoints, though they can be helpful, if they're accommodation, as you can save contact details for them too and phone using the satnav, if you need to.

@@jtchivers once again, THANK YOU. Everything on our trip went so smoothly. Even when we had to detour thanks to farmers and flood damage blocking our routes, it was so simple to reroute past a shaping point.

Biker Bill Thanks for an excellent video. I have struggled for years with BaseCamp when designing motorcycle routes especially long and complicated ones. I would always get halfway through and then when adding waypoints find that BaseCamp had taken a short cut up a dual carriageway/A road when I had wanted to ride the twisties. Then I found that I couldn't delete the errant way point. I had never used the dialogue box and so didn't know I could use this to delete individual way points. A revelation. Thanks again. I'll look out for some more of your tutorials.

I can't tell you how much this has helped me! I've always hated Basecamp with a passion and I've given up using it many times over the years in frustration but it's almost impossible to avoid if you want to create routes without additional headache getting other software to work with Garmin and in my case their Navigator VI for BMW. Dare I say it's pretty simple..lol..thank you

Something I've learned playing around. If you want to create a Via or shape point on the route but not alter the route. Go through the hand tool/alt / click but pull out and then just let it back to the original position. It then creates a Point on the route. Useful if you want to use the "move point tool later" or use it as a via point to be alerted about as you use the route.
@jtchivers

I often use unnecessary via points in this manner just as audio clues, should I want an earlier audio warning about an upcoming feature in the route. Good point!

Very well done, thank you very much. Also good to brush up on some British English terms (carriageway). One thing I did not catch is why the program decided to make one of the points you dragged a via point and the other two became shaping points. I understand this can be changed later but they seemed to have been assigned different properties automatically?
@jtchivers
@jtchivers 5 жыл бұрын
If you drag a point onto a pre-defined point in the map's database - i.e. a point of interest such as a settlement, a shop, pub, or any other featured point of interest, it will automatically be a via point (with alert) rather than a shaping point (without alert).

clear and concise - but how do you then add to device / find on device? thanks
@jtchivers
@jtchivers 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. That was outside the scope of this video, but it's easy enough to do. Right-click on the route you've created and click Send To, then select your plugged in GPS unit. If you're still not sure, a quick search will give you several examples and it looks like others have done videos on how to do this too. This will send the route (and any associated separate waypoints) to the GPS.

Hi John, thanks for your video it's very helpful. One question if I may: how do you send route embbeded waypoints from Basecamp to a Garming GPS? When I'm navigating the GPS, I'd like to see on the GPS screen the waypoints I've added to the route when creating it. I've manage to send across the route itself but not the waypoints. Many thanks. Pedro
@jtchivers
@jtchivers 2 ай бұрын
Hi Pedro. Assuming you're connecting the unit to PC/Mac running Basecamp, sending the route to the GPS will include any Waypoints used in the route automatically. You don't need to send them separately. If it isn't doing that, something isn't set up correctly. I'm assuming you mean Waypoints in the true meaning of what Basecamp calls Waypoints and the GPS unit calls Favourites and you don't mean shaping points.
@Pedro-uo5do

@@jtchivers Thanks for your feedback. Yes I'm connected to a PC and running Basecamp. Google Earth calls these points as Placemarks while Basecamps call them Waypoints. I've also seen people calling them POI's Points of interest... These POI's are sent to the GPS along with the route but not shown on screen during navigation since they are not embbeded in the route. Instead, they are stored within 'Where To?' and then within 'Saved' which doesn't help much as you can't see them while navigating. Any tip will be highly appreciated. Thank you

Hi John, I rode a route today that I had planned on Base Camp but came a cropper when I encountered a couple of road closures and diversions. I got back on my route but the Sat Nav whilst still showing the route ahead that I wanted to follow was also telling me to turn left/right and showing me another track that I assume it wanted me to go down as I had been forced to miss them due to the closures. Would this be because I had planned the route with Way Points and it was ensuring I visited them? Would it have done the same if they had been via points or shaping points?
@jtchivers
@jtchivers 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, a waypoint or a via point are both places you're telling the unit you must visit. The difference between a waypoint and a via point is the waypoint is a favourite. Lots of people use waypoints for route planning, but they're not intended for that purpose. A via point behaves the same way in terms of routing, as you're telling the unit you definitely want to go there. A shaping point is just a preferred point on the route. If you vere off the route, the unit will recalculate between where you are and the next waypoint or via point. In the scenario you describe, the best thing is to use the "skip" function, which tells the unit to skip the next via point or waypoint, so it won't try to get you back to the place you told it you definitely wanted to go but can't get to. Hope that makes sense.

How do I transfer a new route from Basecamp to my Fenix? Where in Basecamp are routes and new routes stored?
@jtchivers
@jtchivers 2 жыл бұрын
I don't know about the Fenix, but right click on anything you want to send to a connected device and you should see the "Send to" option. Routes, waypoints, and tracks are stored in lists and lists under folders. They can be wherever you want them to be. When you select a list, only the items within that list are displayed on the map, so it makes it easier to manage.

If I have a GPS device in a Kenwood DNX 4250 DAB that is stationary in a car . How to install this routes into it?
@jtchivers
@jtchivers 5 жыл бұрын
That doesn't sound like Garmin hardware to me, Karl-Erik, so I'm afraid I've no idea. Basecamp is designed to work with maps which match those on the Garmin GPS. You can export a standard GPX file from Basecamp, so you might be able to import that into your system, but I'm not convinced that is the right way to plan routes in your case.
@SilverfoxAdventuresSweden
@SilverfoxAdventuresSweden 5 жыл бұрын
@@jtchivers It's Garmin in the device for sure.I got a mail from Kenwood that it's not possible to install for example roud trips you make in Tyre or BaseMap to this devices. So as I can see this it's not Garmin problem it's Kenwood problem.

If you're trying to decide between Garmin and Tomtom, get a Tomtom. Basecamp is much harder to understand than Tomtom's My Drive. My Drive is similar to Google Maps. It's much more intuitive than Basecamp.
@jtchivers
@jtchivers 5 жыл бұрын
My touring buddy would politely disagree after binning a fogged-up Tomtom: an issue which seems to be quite a common problem. I don't have a problem with Basecamp, but agree it's not as intuitive initially as Google Maps.

The disadvantage of a VIA point is that when you alter you route for one or another reason, the GPS wants you to go to that VIA point and your guidance gets fucked up. I don't use it.
@jtchivers
@jtchivers 2 жыл бұрын
That's the point of a via point though. You use it to mark somewhere you definitely want to go. If you don't mind missing a point, it should be a shaping point. If you change your mind about the via point en route, you use the skip function to bypass it.
