I still get asked all the time, "How do I use modes to improvise and why are they important?" I'm confident this episode will remove this questions and finally allow you to understand how and why modes are important to your jazz improvisation. Enjoy!

Wow! I get it! Brilliant discussion. Key take aways...atmosphere...not about understanding just the notes but the interval differences in the modes...why when I see minor chord, I shouldn't just throw a dorian atmosphere mode on every minor chord in the song. I was always taught if the chord was minor, just use Dorian and if major, use Ionian and not "complicate" my musical understanding. "This changes everything..." ha ha ha
@jazzpianoschool
@jazzpianoschool 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Lonnie, thank you for the amazing comment! So glad to hear this! You're exactly right, every minor mode for example provides a different atmosphere and when to choose one over the other depends on the context of the music.

Thanks again, Brenden, for the clarity. Listen, i'm learning "Blue In Green" and do you have a podcast on that Miles/Evans piece where you talk about its "modalness." There's no key signature to ground me for thinking in the various modes in the composition.

Great! But why we don't think that play in Bb major scale for all chords instead of modes beacause Eb lydian is just Bb major scale but start from Eb (in autumn leaves) so it will simplify brain work
@jazzpianoschool
@jazzpianoschool 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Hung, thanks for checking out the video and for your question! You're right - a lot of the modes in this tune especially can all be simplified to Bb major (like you said Eb lydian is the same as Bb major). This video is not to suggest to think about C Dorian, F mixo, Bb ioanian, Eb lydian, A locrian, etc every new chord, but rather just an explanation of the modes and how they work.

If you are playing rootless voicings in the left hand, should your right hand focus on the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th scale degrees? Or on the 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th degrees?
@jazzpianoschool
@jazzpianoschool 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt: thanks for the question. The short answer is both! However, keep in mind that if you play a rootless 3-5-7-9 voicing in your left hand, and treat the 3-5-7-9 as the new 1-3-5-7 in your RH, then it’s the equivalent of changing the chord from a Cmaj7 to an Emin7 for example (or Cmin7 to Ebmaj7 in the case of a minor chord). So you can still play the 3-5-7-9, but treat the 9 as you would do any other time, it’s still a color tone/extension, and treat the 1-3-5-7 as the main chord tones when improvising in your RH otherwise it might lose it’s tonal center. Hope this helps!

I have a question. What is exactly a chord tone? Is it only root third and fifth of each chord? are sevenths considered as chord tones as well? I ask this question because in the video you seem to avoid making the changes on the sevenths of the chords even though it was the closest note around to play on a downbeat. For example at 10:20 isn’t f a chord tone of g7? Then to cmaj7, why go to to e instead of b?
@jazzpianoschool
@jazzpianoschool 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Isma, thanks for watching and for the question. You are correct, a chord tone is the 1, 3, 5, and 7th of the chords. The name chord tone implies the notes of the chord you are playing. Hope this is helpful!

How about chords with alterations, are the alterations chord tones to be targeted? i.e. C7(b9) - would you consider the b9 of this chord as a chord tone to be "targeted" when soloing?

The question still remains for me: Why can’t we just play the scale of a song (in this case, Bb) instead of thinking in various modes every time we switch chords?
@jazzpianoschool
@jazzpianoschool 2 жыл бұрын
The modes help explain each chord scale from the root. You can think of wider key centers like you're describing if you can identify a key center (like a 2-5-1 in Bb Major for example). Hope this helps!

@@jazzpianoschool So the modes are not really necessary if you can just play the main scale (“Bb” let’s say)? I think I’m not understanding your explanation correctly.

@@AlanOtto i didn t see the point for years too, but the way he explains it in the video makes it very clear that it is very important because if you just think in term of key when you improvise, u have more chance to hit the wrong notes at the wrong time. It has a lot to do with the rythm. That s what is important.

here's several things for how to learn piano Try practicing for 1 hour each day, or half an hour if you short of time. Do extra practice whenever you have more time. For example, on weekends you can do more than 1 hour, perhaps 2 or three, or even more. (I discovered about these and more on Denelle piano lesson site )
