It took me two years to figure out how to use my prescription without my face falling off, I figured it was only fair to pass on that knowledge so others could get results without the side effects. What were your experiences?

I am an old person with very good skin.But I live in a country with a lot of sun.It almost always sunny here.So I used prescription retinol only in the winter months ,for many years every other night.I had peeling , I was wearing very minimal make up and I believe that it was allright for me.Now I rarely peel.And I still use my acids in the winter months.That's all.I hope you 'll have the same results as me.Nobody guesses my age.It is very funny

@@castadivanorma8478 That is a great point, you of course need to adapt your retinoid strategy to the climate you live in. Here in Germany the sun is pretty moderate all year round, so I don’t need to stop using it in the summer time. And congrats to having such great success, a good routine pays off in the long run.

Great video!! I started my Tretinoin journey about 8 months ago at the age of 39 and it has been quite a ride but well worth it. When I first started I was using Tretinoin every third night and I would buffer it where I would cleanse my face, apply niacinamide, apply moisturizer and wait about half an hour or so. Then I would go and apply my Tretinoin and wait another 20min to half an hour and then I would apply the moisturizer again on top of Tretinoin. Also, right before I went to bed I would put some Aquaphor on my face just to seal everything in. I did that for about a month then I went to using it every other night and now I don’t have to wait all that time in between I can just apply niacinamide, moisturizer then Tretinoin. I would only wait a bit to put another layer over the Tretinoin as I want to give it some time to kind of sink in. I also tried using it on bare skin without anything and I was fine compared to how bad I was peeling at the beginning. The only thing that I notice is some faint redness the morning after the Tretinoin around my mouth but it goes away within an hour or so. I also want to mention that throughout my entire journey I kept using my vitamin C and peptides. I hope that this helps someone but honestly if you stick it out and put up with some horrible peeling and irritation like I have it will be so worth it. With that being said, you don’t have to go through all the peeling or irritation if you do what I have been doing because at the very beginning I went straight to using it once every other day without buffer just straight on dry skin and it took me some time to find out what works as I had to do a lot of research and digging around but overall give it a try and I hope it works for you.

Hey Dr Anne! Really wanted to thank you! It’s been almost a month using tretinoin and by following your great advices I have NO irritation so far! There is no harm in applying the niacinamide first and then the tretinoin. And Tretinoin is sensitive to light, but that is mainly the UV light, and it won’t degrade within minutes. @@DoctorAnne I'm not a doctor but my brother in law is a surgeon in the uk and years back spoke to him about the overuse of antibiotics. He agreed it was irresponsible for any doctors to be prescribing antibiotics for acne; not only because it doesn't tackle the root cause but it just adds to the antibiotic resistance. There is little to no place for antibiotics for acne. Maybe there are exceptions but I had mild to moderate as a kid and certainly shouldn't have been offered them.
@DoctorAnne
@DoctorAnne 3 жыл бұрын
@@supgizmo5021 Naturally a surgeon has a different outlook on antiniotics use than a dermatologist has. There are many people involved in writing the guidelines, and while I agree that there are many options to treat acne where an antibiotic is needed, I would recommend listening to the dermatologists rather than the surgeons when it comes to these guidelines. An important reason for antibiotic resistance is the widespread use in animals to make up for poor living conditions on animal farms. Does that mean that misusing antibiotics in humans isn't a big deal? Absolutely not. But unnecessary antibiotics are very common in different medical fields, including surgery, and I am afraid the antibiotic resistance theme is often used to shame people using antibiotics to treat their acne. Again, not saying I disagree with you on that, I just want to point out that it is a very complex topic.

I saw this and tried these tips the other night and it’s much better. But I use ADAPALENE because I hate what retinoids do to my skin. …but what I did different was I applied adapalene first and then niacinimide then I moisturized with Avene xera calm. Once my skin felt very resistant and strong I later applied pixie glow tonic, some petrolatum moisturizer on top (it’s extremely cold climate so I need much more moisture than usual ) and on top I spot treated with benzol peroxide spot treatment I know it sounds weird but that order helped me a lot !
@DoctorAnne

Adapalene has less irritation than Tretinoin, so that might help. I wouldn't pair it with pixi Glow Tonic and Benzoylperoxide though, as that might cause trouble over time. Better to adapt to it for 6-8 weeks and then see if you can use the other stuff eventually.

When you say irritation do you also mean acne? I’ve been using tretinion for years. I’m kind of inconsistent with it because I feel like it makes my face break out worst. I’m using it for acne and then I still break out so I also use a 10% benzoyl peroxide face wash. I have multiple serums, oils, creams, toners. But I feel like the more I try to tackle the acne the worst it gets. I’m also a nurse so wearing the mask for 12 hrs a day 3 days a week has really blown up my chin acne and now along my cheekbones and around my ear lobe. I can’t go to my dermatologist because I treat COVID patients and work a lot of overtime. Please send help and thank you again. 💖

@DoctorAnne
@DoctorAnne 3 жыл бұрын
It usually isn´t irritation in terms of breakouts, that is most likely purging, which happens because all the pimples that are waiting to develop come to the surface at once. The slower you introduce the Tretinoin, the less likely this is to appear, but you need to be consistent to get the results. Mask wearing often aggravates acne, I feel you on that. My suggestion would be to strip back most of your other skincare and just introduce the Tretinoin slowly. It usually needs at least six weeks to get results.

I always recommend listening to your prescribing doctor, as they know your skin and your situation best. Irritation usually occurs a little later than week one, at around week 3-6.

Hey! I was using .025% tretinoin cream but after using it for few days .. my face looked much more oily and and I saw so many new clogged pores ..I used the gel version .05% on my cheeks where I usually get lots of acne ..2 times a week .. seems to work on my clogged pores .. but kinda makes my skin red ! What’s the reason of being oily? Is that the vehicle of that cream? and do I need to apply it on my whole face ? Or concerned area ? And any way to lessen the irritation with gel?
@DoctorAnne
@DoctorAnne 3 жыл бұрын
The ways to lessen the irritation are in the video, I suggest you watch it for that. And yes, the vehicle does matter, but it is normal to see a purge aka a phase where the skin actually gets worse before it gets better in the first few weeks, so it could have been both. And yes, it is supposed to go on the whole face, to treat the underlying changes in the skin, it is not supposed to be used as spot treatment.

Hello doc my skin type is combination,I have bumps almost all over my face and some stubborn white/blackheads on my nose, also dark spots too recently I have started to use tretinoin gel 0.025 so is it good to use 1% salicylic acid facewash or not?
@DoctorAnne

As I say in the video, I would give your skin time to adapt to the Tretinoin before introducing other "actives", but that is just my opinion. You could try using both and see how it works for you.

Hi! I am using currently Medik8 Crystal Retinal. Could I use Tretinoin every 3rd day maybe? My skin is OK, no peeling or dryness. I used Retinal every night. Thank you and kind regards from Croatia!
@DoctorAnne
@DoctorAnne 3 жыл бұрын
If the Medik8 is working so well for you, why do you want to change it? If you want to make the switch, you most likely already have a tolerance for retinoids, so you can start a little more intense, like every other night maybe, but every third night should work as well.

After how long can I start using vitamin C serum when using retinoids
@DoctorAnne
@DoctorAnne 3 жыл бұрын
That depends on your skin and the retinoid use. My suggestion would be to first introduce the retinoid until you reach the amount you want to keep using and then slowly introduce other potentially irritating ingredients.

Does that mean do not use Skinceuticals Vitamin C and Ferulic Acid in the am? In the am I use Skinmedica Essential Serum, Skinceuticals vitamin C, SkinMedical hylaronic Acid, Revision eye cream, a moisturizer and sunscreen. At night when I don’t use my Retin A (only use .05 twice a week and I still really peel) I use SkinMedica Essential Serum, Resveratrol, SkinMedica Hylaronic Acid, eye cream and a moisturizer. My dermatologist doesn’t really talk skin care that’s why I was so impressed by your video
@DoctorAnne
@DoctorAnne 3 жыл бұрын
@@carolesimmons9476 It all comes down to your individual skin, but if you have trouble introducing the RetinA without peeling, I strongly suggest reducing everything else to the bare minimum, just a gentle cleanser, a moisturizer and of course SPF. Hyaluronic Acid is usually not a problem, but Vitamin C is something with an irritating potential on its own.

I already have breakouts ( white heads that are very itchy and tightness of skin on forehead) PLEASE HELP!!!
@DoctorAnne
@DoctorAnne Жыл бұрын
If your skin feels tight and itchy, something is probably amiss and it might be that the acids in the cream and the retinol are too much. It might be something else though, so it is hard to tell. Maybe try reducing the frequency of actives and seeing if your skin gets better? If it gets worse, try to see a doctor.

There are several factors going into that, like where you live, if your skin is especially sun sensitive or if you suffer from hyperpigmentation. But while I wear SPF every day, even if I am inside the house, I personally do not reapply if I don't leave the house.

Doctor Anne do you think "Cordess Vas"has the same amount of tretinoin ingredients as others? (Retin A from Italy). Ihave never had any irritation from tretinoin, but I had some peeling from the Italian version. I miss it:)) (using Cordess Vass) thank you
@DoctorAnne
@DoctorAnne 3 жыл бұрын
There are different concentrations in the prescription products, so maybe the Italian version had a higher concentration? Or your skin simply got used to it, the peeling should always be a temporary effect anyway. The formula, meaning the other ingredients the Tretinoin is paired with, has a huge influence as well.

Doctor, is it alright to continue using 0.1%adapalene fr months or years without any break? Does skin develop any sort of tolerance to it over time? I am 22yrs old. Though hormonal acne and stubborn comedones are my major concerns I do have fine lines on my forehead (even after drinking 2.5-3ltrs of water/d. Could you guide me please.
@DoctorAnne
@DoctorAnne 4 жыл бұрын
You don’t need a break and you will not get tolerant to it. If you feel it isnt doing enough for the acne, I would suggest seeing a dermatologist to develop a strategy for you individually. As for the fine lines, drinking will not prevent them. Sunscreen and hydrating skincare as well as an antioxidant are great at your age, but these will not prevent fine lines from appearing over time. They are perfectly normal.
