I've been a computer techie for 30 years, raised 4 boys to young men and encouraged them all to learn this stuff, but not one of them had any interest. Until now - my 25 year old wants to learn this stuff. He should've started when he was 10 - he would've had 15 years of experience by now! All this guy needs is some guidance.

This kid doesn't know what a traceroute does. From wikipedia: "In computing, traceroute is a computer network diagnostic tool for displaying the route (path) and measuring transit delays of packets across an Internet Protocol (IP) network. The history of the route is recorded as the round-trip times of the packets received from each successive host (remote node) in the route (path); the sum of the mean times in each hop indicates the total time spent to establish the connection. Traceroute proceeds unless all (three) sent packets are lost more than twice, then the connection is lost and the route cannot be evaluated. Ping, on the other hand, only computes the final round-trip times from the destination point."

I'll be watching this, hear him say something stupid and from there on I don't hear anything else, I'm just trying to calculate the sheer stupidity of it... So every time I watch it, there's some new ignorant statement immediately following the last one. That's it, I'm moving to Mars. I hear there's a company recruiting for colonists and they plan to launch in the 2020s. Can't come soon enough for me.

I am surprised that traceroute allows before the hostname though. I would have expected an error that it couldn't resolve 'google.com' does the Windows tracert app just ignore it? My Mac definitely gives an error if you try to use a URL for traceroute. Also, whoever is talking smack on this kid, let's see you get 1 million views! :)

The DNS lookup just needs a valid hostname to resolve an IP, I'd say the problem is probably a difference in the Windows and Mac implementations of tracert that's causing it to choke on the prefix.

you're completely right , windows confused the hell out of this kid accepting http as a valid argument .. dns is purely name resolution , no matter if the ip is binding http ftp asstp or whatever

his ISP does failed DNS lookup hijacking. the IP he's tracer'ting (!) to is Roadrunner's DNS Hijacker, not Google... Name: ww23.rr.com Address: 24.28.193.9
