More Details About This Video:
Using a cane or crutch when you have an injury can be very confusing especially when characters on TV shows don't even use them right! Once you get the hang of it, it becomes very easy and natural. When we walk normally, our opposite arm swings forward with our opposite leg. When using a cane, you want the same technique so you don't risk injuring something else while you are recovering.
The most important part to start with is to make sure your cane is the right height. Most canes have a pin you can push in to change the height. On your upper leg there is a bone that sticks out called your greater trochanter. It is just below your hip. This is where you want the top of the cane. You should have a slight bend in your elbow about 20 degrees. If the cane is too high, you might irritate your shoulder, and if it is too low, you might lean over too much.
Now for the walking part. The cane should be in the opposite hand of the injured side. Yes, House, MD did it wrong! The cane should always move with the injured side. If the injured side goes forward, the cane goes forward for support. Again, this is how our bodies naturally move; so don't think about it too much. Just move how you would normally move. The cane should be for balance and safety, and if you feel like you are pushing really hard on it, or if you can't walk smoothly, then you probably are not ready for a cane yet.

Still should've made it clear earlier. Social media has a big impact on people's perceptions, especially of disabled people. For example the visual cue of having blind characters wear shades has led to actual blind people being questioned or told they're faking because they don't wear glasses.

It really depends on how much balance you have. If your balance is good, and you just need to take some pressure off your ankle, a cane would be fine. If you need a little more support, then you might want to use a crutch. Good luck!!

Some people are not going to have enough balance to move them together...especially with a quad cane. In those cases, you want to lead with the cane first, then follow with the opposite leg level to the cane instead of through like a normal step. We call it a "step-to" pattern instead of a "step-through" pattern. I hope that helps!! Good luck!!

What a nice find! Thank you, Dr. Jo. I have considered buying a cane for my Arthritis issues. Since I don't have a leg injury, but sciatica-like pain in hips, sides, buttocks, legs, etc. I don't really know which hand I should be holding the cane in. Mostly of late the pain is in the above mentioned areas along my right side. I was trying a cane in the local drug store and I noticed that pretty quickly I was adding shoulder, hand and opposite leg and knee into the mix. (Wow, I'm a mess! LOL ) So, since I can't levitate, I thought a cane could help somewhat. I have been noticing a decrease in balance of late and on a walk through the woods I had improved that balance when using an old tree branch as a walking stick. Do you have any advice relative to my issues, or would you suggest experimenting with what works best for me? Thank you for the video!
@AskDoctorJo
@AskDoctorJo 11 жыл бұрын
If you can get the hang of it, you want each (Loftstrand) crutch to follow the opposite leg. So right arm goes, left leg follows, and left arm goes, right leg follows. I hope that helps!!
@AskDoctorJo
@AskDoctorJo 11 жыл бұрын
The way shown is the correct way. If it does not work well, then that is usually an indication that you need an assistive device that helps you more (quad cane, walker). The problem with using it on the other side is that it changes your whole body mechanics and that can cause other problems in the long term. I have worked with several patients that have CMT. Have you ever tried aquatic therapy? This really helps because you can strengthen your muscles without gravity causing so much pain.

I appreciate this vid! Years ago, when I was at my heaviest weight, I developed psoriasis on my right ankle (right side), and began to experience pain. Didn't know why, until I was sitting on the couch one afternoon and saw a commercial discussing "psoriatic arthritis", and then realized what I was dealing with. Psoriasis hasn't ever come back to my ankle, but with cold weather, it's get debilitating sometimes walking on that ankle, or even that foot at times, so having a cane helps alleviate that pressure. Will have to get used to using the cane with my left hand, and trying to walk simultaneously, for those moments when I need that support. Thank you again!

I had a labrium tear on my left hip and after 2 weeks was told to go from 2 to 1 crutch, using it on the opposite side the affected hip. I will move onto a cane eventually. Not having in on the affected side didn't make sense. I thought you'd want to use it to support you weak side. But once I used it per the doctors orders, it was more comfortable. Thankfully your video explains how to correctly used a cane as know I'll be doing my rehab correctly!!! Thanks so much!

Thank you. I'm just now using a cane to help me walk around work after surgery for cancer. Your advice about height of the cane and which hand to hold it and how to walk taught me what I needed to know. Now I'll practice.

Wish I had seen this when I had my knee injury. I had been using my cane wrong this whole time! I was watching this video today because, though my knee is much better, I'm an actor and I'm in a performance where I need to realistically portray a man who has a leg injury. Great video for both people who are actually injured and people who need to understand the how's and why's of everything.

Thank you so much for this video i was using is wrong..i am on a walker at the moment but am trying to convert to the walker slowly. I feel both legs are my bad legs but, the broken one has rods in it and also broke front and back of pelvis and hips in 5 areas. The surgeon said the leg that has the rods are my strongest leg so i needed a little incite and you really helped thank you Dr. Joe! I have now found a new website for how too's on medical questions! God bless!

Part of my foot dislocates quite a lot, in the past it's not really been a major issue and after a few days I can walk without too much pain. This last time though has been pretty bad and I've been grounded for a couple of weeks now as can't put pressure on it. A cane is arriving today so glad I found this video to clarify the side I should have the cane on but mainly how to calculate the height the cane should be. Hopefully I'll be able to get out and about soon.

Unfortunately, I don't have a cane. Some people don't even use a cane. Many people use walking/hiking sticks, and decorative things these days. The technique is the most important part. I hope it is easy to understand, and I hope the video helped. Good luck!
