How to Walnut Blast Your Intake Valves (CARBON BUILDUP REMOVAL)

In this video, I get rid of the carbon buildup that is found on my intake valves. Most direct injection engines that have the fuel injector spraying fuel directly into the cylinder, will have problems similar to this and they need to be addressed from time to time. Since gasoline is not hitting the backside of the intake valves, there will be a decent amount of buildup and it will reduce fuel efficiency, engine responsiveness, power, and you may even run into problems like I did were I started to have a misfire.

It is crucial to get this procedure done from time to time, but going to the stealership is not going to be a fun trip for this repair. I was quoted well over $1000 to get this done at my local BMW/Mini dealer, and I can’t say that I had any intention to waste all of that money. This is a fairly easy procedure as long as you do the process correctly, just like how I’ve outlined in this video. The tools to do this will be less than 1/4th of the cost of what BMW wants to get this done, and then at the end of the day, you will have the tools to do it again down the road.
If you have any questions, feel free to send me an email at milanmastracci@gmail.com. Thanks for watching!! :)

yeah but itll just be for all the cars that have the early direct injection. now theyre doing a combo of port/direct on the new cars to counter this. (amazed the engineers didnt account for it in the first place but oh well) but there are definitely a lot of cars right now (including my 2019 silverado) that will need this eventually

Chandler Ley I’m pretty sure they absolutely 100% accounted for the issues keep making money off your products weather it be catch cans to slow process down or 1k 1/2 every couple years to “fix” issue that keeps coming back. I have been looking into just building my fsi into port injection but this seems like something your gonna have no matter what just different mile frame wise. I’m at 180,000 on my 06 and have never taken it in to do this ran oil additives from liquid molly and sea foam in fuel “pointless” and the spray in manifold got it torn apart isn’t too bad buildup intake side haven’t looked at exhaust yet but gonna sparkle like a diamond in a goats ass when done

Very well done video. I learned a lot from it. Sure there are a few areas that could be improved yet my hat is off to men like you that will take the time to create this kind of content and post it for the public to view. Boy oh boy is KZfaq ever full of opinionated armchair experts. As a point if information, this in-car-technique is actually how Mini dealerships perform the service. Only one difference, their machines have a defibrillator attached to the side so that customers can be resuscitated after they see the invoice. ;)

One more thing you should note. As mentioned in the video, some of the walnut dust and shell might be stuck on the edge of the valve and drop into the cylinder. If this happens, just stick a small plastic tube (ie. a slurpee straw) down the spark plug holes and vacuum it out. A small inspection camera to fully ensure no walnut media is in the cylinder may be a wise investment as well. hand held units aren't too expensive, couple hundred bucks or so. If you're saving all this money doing this job yourself, may as well buy some new toys while you're at it!

That is awesome! I never seen or even knew about that. Amazing my man. I said since I found your channel about a year ago you are a very smart young man. If you remember the last time I commented on this about just removing the head and intake and having a complete fully port matched,polish, and complete race valve job done to beef up the power but this is truly amazing. Even though this is a great way for side work but you are using the Mini for a race car so the complete machine shop head work would have been best but this is an great video for a DIY repair video and great work once again young man. You always are surprising me and I am so proud of you I think I am going to cry. I guess down the road you can beef up the engine and now you got a great new way to make side money. Absolutely impressive. Golf clap. Everyone give this young man a round of applause.

Oil selection is important with GDI as a tactic to spread out service intervals -- ideally a low Noack volatility (so as not to react with fuel and form junk) and a thin base (so as to evaporate before it ever gets a chance to bind to the valve). Those two things do not go together naturally, so pick carefully.

There are a handful of products you spray into the intake while the engine is running that are meant to replace this procedure, obviously nothing that comes in a can will replace this depth of work but it will help control buildup all around. Various forums recommend it as a complement to walnut blasting
@TdrSld
@TdrSld 6 жыл бұрын
You need a catch can on the PVC system as this is where most of the deposits come from. As the oil vapor condensates out of the air and lines the runner walls it leaves a nice oily place for the EGR gasses to stick to. The catch can will remove the oil vapor and stop the oily wall problem. This has been a huge problem on the 3.5l Ecoboost from Ford.

Decades ago we used walnut shells to clean Rolls Royce Dart Turboprop engine compressors. Only diff was we injected the shells into the engine from a hopper at full power. Very effective on power restoration. Direct injection fuel mileage gains lost to mechanic labor costs to clean out ports which is complicated on some engines. Net gain nil.

100% correct,, but.. Carbondeposits and nutshells that are trapped in the tight space between the valve and the seat sucks in when starting engine, and might score the cylinders and hurt valveseats. You can never be sure of that you never leave any deposits unless you take the engine apart.
@svenschwingel8632
@svenschwingel8632 6 жыл бұрын
Patrick Wetterskog you are 100% correct on that, especially when your valves have already started to build up carbon deposits close to their edges and might not properly sit in their seats anymore. Disassembling the head for an overhaul and cleanup is the preferrable option. And that way, you can also change the valve shaft gaskets which also contribute to sludge buildup on the intake side. Plus, you can clean the pistons as well if necessary.

IMNOTA nope, is not to justify the price, it is really better! A lot of test has been made, because the Europe regulations are very strict and petroleum company's must exceed the quality of the product, if not, they can receive a big penalty. Also, if the country have no pretroleum in his own land, of course it is more expensive! Here in my country, the price is 1,50 Dollars per litre of 98oct... No pretroleum at all in this piece of land!!!

I have yet to see anyone post anywhere a fair comparison of with and without catch can. For example, a 30,000 mile test starting with clean valves and run without catch can. Then another 30000 after cleaning the valves again and run with catch can. Until then, it's just a theory.

If you place a long straw/stick/screwdriver in the spark plug hole, when you turn the engine by hand you can better tell if any given cylinder is at top dead center, which means the valves are completely closed. The stick will be in it's highest position possible.

@Induction by Force not a cure, direct injection has other issues that even without carbon build up, can still ruin a long engine life. The compression ratio of all DI engines puts wear and tear fast, even with dual ports (multi port & DI). Also the 10% ethanol in gas that we all use adds to fast wear and tear in any engine.
