This video demonstrates another method for wedging a small tree. It is the fourth video I have done on this subject. I decided to demonstrate this method because some of you mentioned it. This is not a method used in commercial timber falling, because it has several steps to it and would be slow and unproductive. I recommend this method as the absolute safest and best method for tree services falling small trees beside a house or property owners who have little experience reading the lean of a tree and falling it. For those with little experience falling trees. I recommend you practice boring with your bar tip first. Just practice on a round of wood until your comfortable boring into a tree with the saw. I also recommend you watch the video on kickback safety. One last suggestion. If you are using this method to cut a tree that is near a structure, it is very advisable to put a rope in the tree and use a pickup to put tension on the rope. Then use this method in combination with a rope tied up high on the trunk of the tree.

I wish you well on you hardwood cutting. Hardwood tends to be a little trickier. Keep an eye on the where the limb weight is and not just the lean. The limb weight on hardwoods can be extreme!

Thanks for taking the time to demonstrate a technique you normally don't even use. That's cool that you are sharing something, just for us to see. It was helpful for me, especially the little bits about cutting a little wider so you don't hit your wedge - if you have enough tree width. Little skinny tall trees, especially back leaners in the wind, can be a pain , because you don't have much room for your wedge, and always end up nipping the wedge with your saw, or slamming the wedge into part of the hinge. So, thanks. I usually bore from the "wrong" side though ... heh heh ... through the wedge/open face.

That is a good idea. As long as they have enough thickness to lift the tree a fair amount. I suppose a person could double up 5 or 6 inch wedges just as well as any other wedges.

Coinncidence? After learning how to bore cut (at long last) i encountered several vids about this technique. This was among the best. Almost all of the trees I must fell are "small" but that doesn't mean "easy" or that the consequences of failure aren't all bad. Thanks, Brother, for thinking of us.

What about using shorter 5" wedges for small trees?
@norcaltimberfaller1943
@norcaltimberfaller1943 2 жыл бұрын
Using smaller wedges on small trees is a good idea. It is always a pain if the wedge hits the hinge and does not tip the tree over. In that case just double up wedges that should do the trick.
@lernwithgern

@@norcaltimberfaller1943 thanks for the response. I cut excess fuels and burned timber in Colorado. Most trees are 14" and smaller. Clearing 5-20 acres of burned timber, I end up pushing a bunch of them. Not the safest, but get it down quick. Really like your straight forward and useful videos. Keep it up. Stay safe out there.

Hey what wood lends itself well to making wedges..if a guy wanted to make sacrificial wedges? I've done a few with similar techniques but on the odd occasion where angles and or multiple trunks on a cluster are involved a couple sacrificial wedges might be the ticket.

I think Douglas Fir is about the best for that. Hardwood splits to easy and Redwood or White Fir are a bit to soft. Doug Fir is middle of the road.

I can just see me giving this ago, not making enough room for clearance on the wedge, the tip of the saw hitting the wedge as i am doing the side cuts, the chain grabbing the wedge and spitting it out of the back of the tree...

Hi Dan: question on this: the bore through to the face cut--still about 1 or so inches above the "v" of the fact cut for the hinge wood?? Or, direct into the V? Thx in advance!
@norcaltimberfaller1943
@norcaltimberfaller1943 12 күн бұрын
I think your talking about the conventional face cut and boring through it in order to place the wedge in the back. In that case it makes the most sense to raise your back cut up about one inch and then bore out through the face.....

Is there any advantage to using a conventional cut instead of a humbolt cut with this wedge technique? I recently cut a couple smaller trees (12 inch diameter) with my nephew. Would have been good to use this technique when we needed to cut a bit more off the holding wood and the tree's weight came back on the saw. (just a 1/2 second too much cutting) Tree wasn't in danger of going the wrong way, but ended up needing to pull it over with a rope. Wedging it over through a center bore cut would have been so much better.
@norcaltimberfaller1943
@norcaltimberfaller1943 2 жыл бұрын
I think their is an advantage to using a conventional cut here. The main advantage is that if you start the bore cut in the back of the tree, then you do not have to perfectly match the bore cut with the face cut. Just come in a inch or so above the bottom cut and everything is good. Also having that inch or so step in the back cut helps a little on the wedging.
