To answer several questions below and goes for all outdrives, the best fail safe way to winterize is simply run it with the outdrive immersed in a more than 50/50 mix of regular antifreeze after draining the petcocks and shutting. Run engine for about one minute and your completely done and safe in all cavities, manifolds, and outdrive. Use safe for aluminum radiators antifreeze, the orange gallons at Autozone. I take my prop off so the outdrive fits in a smaller container then use whats left over in other vehicles you can also rig a hose to the inlet from a container of antifreeze reverse the procedure in spring to flush it so its not going in a lake or river etc..

@kaya miya I prefer to pour directly in the hoses. If you don't get you boat up to proper operating temp you risk not getting antifreeze into all of your engine if running it from a tank.

I winterize about 65 boats a season for a local marina in my area. I do everything exactly as you are doing in the video. I'm in Tennessee so most boats stay in the water during the winter because we don't have problems with the lake freezing over so there is a couple things I've got to do a little differently since they are in the water. One thing you did on the motor that has the lines for the hot water heater that's different than I do. I blow the line out and pour a little of the pink antifreeze into it but I do not use the loop hose. Since I've blown out the existing hoses and poured a little anti freeze into it I not sure of the need for the loop hose. I just reattach the permanent hoses. Unlike running RV antifreeze through the fresh water system you don't have to worry about flushing in the spring to avoid foul orders it will flush as soon as the motor cranks up. Just wondering about the loop hose and the advantage to doing it that way. Great video. Thanks

Thanks for this great video. 2 Questions: "water heater"? Not on every boat right? So a 20foot bow rider I can skip that part? Second question: I've always ran antifreeze via a gravity system through the outdrive... pouring antifreeze in the hoses at the thermostat (looks a lot easier) will it put antifreeze in the OUT drive also? And do I disconnect AND fill ALL 4 hoses? Thanks again!!

Hey Eddie the only thing I forgot was the drain the two on the sea pump. I did pull the hoses on each side of the block and the front main one at the bottom. I ran -100 in it but I’m concerned since I didn’t drain the sea pump itself. What should I do? I bought two more gallons I was just going to fill them up how you showed? Perhaps then just drain it all after I do that?

I would to loosen up the bottom clamp put a screwdriver in there and make sure you got some pink antifreeze coming out. So now it’s not gonna freeze and crack the housing.

I have a 4.3 MPI. Did this yesterday. I put just over two gallons in the block and about 3/4 gallons in each of the risers. I stopped adding anti-freeze to the risers when I heard the anti-freeze coming out the back. I'm not sure if I added enough to the risers because my hoses were not completely filled as shown in the video. My users manual says 21 quarts of anti-freeze is required. I don't think that is correct. I've never come close to putting in five gallons. Yes hoses are the same.

I have a question about adding the antifreeze to the risers. You say it will come out the outdrive but at the same time it filled up the hose. Do you continue adding it until it fills up to the top of the hose or do you stop adding once it starts to come out of the outdrive?

Confused??? Why does most marine shops drain all of the - 50 back out of the block as the last step? Does nobody trust this antifreeze? Or if there was any water in the block that you did not get out would make parts crack?

Great video's. But I have a question. On my Mercruiser 4,3 ltr with carburator (yr 2000) I take out all blue plugs out of the engine and as far as I know it will drain all the water from the engine. What is the reason I see you put anti freeze in the engine block here? when it is empty it can not freeze right? have been doing that for 9 years and works fine each year at start up. So please explain
@OnboardWithEddie
@OnboardWithEddie 2 жыл бұрын
Like I away say, This is the way I do it. There are many different ways to winterize your engine. but my thought is always 4 gallons of antifreeze. At $3.50a gallon. I don’t mind spending the money so I’m confident it’s not gonna freeze over.🤷🏻‍♂️. So yes, you can Drain it and don’t put any antifreeze in it. That’s entirely up to you.

@@OnboardWithEddie Yes....I agree, and I also imagine that what part of the country you live, and how mild or harsh the winters are where you live makes a difference as well. I keep my boat in the water, and I live in the Southeastern part of the USA. While our winters are mild, compared to the Northeast, it can still get rather cold during the winter. Most winters, I will backfill with Antifreeze to the block. But I am fortunate to have an Heater installed in the engine bay. I was told by the Dealer when they installed it that if I just drain the engine and run the Heater, then I should be fine. But again, usually when we get to around January, I might backfill, although there may have been some winters where I have not added the Antifreeze. But sometimes for the peace of mind, I will just spend the bucks and backfill with the Antifreeze. But I definitely think that adding that Heater has been a life saver, as it allows me to both use the boat longer into the season, and it gives me a little flexibility in terms of Winterization. But I'd be curious to hear your feedback Eddie. Also, thanks for your Great Videos!!

@@OnboardWithEddie thanks for your reply. I will be living on it during the week and can’t store it unfortunately. All the service is done and bellows, anodes, seals and oils been changed. I will renew the antifouling next week. I am thinking of draining the water and add anti freeze just in case to the engine . I saw there are option of a engine room heater blower what you think about them ? Looking in to this. Our winters at the mosel are very mild and hardly snow reaches it. Let’s see how it goes. 😊

You could. But your still going to have to blow the water out. I actually disconnected it totally drained all the water out. Because the only time I really use. the hot water heater is, when I’m at the dock plugged in. That will also pro Long the life of the hot water heater.

Hi Eddie Those the engine fogging must be done before adding the antifreeze in the engine? Thanks
@OnboardWithEddie
@OnboardWithEddie Жыл бұрын
Yes. I do it before I put the antifreeze in the engine. I usually flush the engine with freshwater until it hits operating temperature. Before I shut the engines down that’s when I do it.

Does this method apply also on a engine with a closed loop cooling system? In my understanding it still takes in raw water to cool the exhaust?
@cme4brain11
@cme4brain11 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, raw water is pumped in via the rubber impeller to the heat exchanger in the engine to cool the internal engine radiator. The raw water is ejected out of the engine via the risers and exhausts below the waterline (in inboard/outdrive boats). The internal engine radiator has typical car engine radiator fluid and is cold-protected.

Its much easier if you put a bowl whats large enough to fit under the Outdrive, fill it up with Antifreeze that the Prop and Caviplate is in Antifreeze and let engine run for 1-2 minutes, you dont have to make then all this.

My fuck this is overly complicated. Just get the engine to temp in the water or on a garden hose then immediately hook up the ears to a 5 gallon container of the RV antifreeze and suck it into the engine via the outdrive...done in 15 minutes start to finish.
@bparnold3318
@bparnold3318 9 жыл бұрын
+thastinger345 Just so you know, I did the outdrive clamp method at operating temp on my 5.0mpi yesterday, then drained everything before refilling like above. The antifreeze coming out of the block when I drained it was really diluted with water. I'd highly recommend doing the method in the video. Especially here in MN it gets brutally cold in the winter and you need all of the -50F rating on that antifreeze.
@thastinger345
@thastinger345 9 жыл бұрын
Yeah, agreed. If I lived where it got -50F I wouldn't use the RV stuff. I'd probably drain the block, reinstall the drain plugs, remove the tstat housing and then pour in antifreeze directly into the engine.

If you don't drain the motor down before adding the antifreeze you are just deluding the water thus you will not have as much protection from extreme cold days. By draining the water out then adding the antifreeze you have 100% anti freeze protection. When you do this for a living you don't cut corners because if the motor should freeze you're liable.
