My 212 cab had 2 16 ohm's wired to be an 8 ohm cab.. I'm putting 8 ohm speakers in it.. and I don't want it to be 4 ohms.. so I'm changing the wiring to be 16 ohms. This video has made it easy to understand!

This is exactly what I needed to know!. Right now I'm starting to work on a 2x12 cab, and I was confused about how to make the electrical connections, so as to not damage my guitar amplifier (Laney Cub 12r). Although I haven't decided if a make a new cab or instead I purchase a new one and just change the speakers (which I already purchased).... Anyway, thanks for the tutorial. Two thumbs up! 👍👍Greetings from Santiago, Chile. 👋👋

Hi, great instructions! This relates to my project. I am adding a input jack to a Fender Frontman 212R to allow use as an external speaker Cab (without the Amp head powered on). I will need to rewire the 2 speakers to be in series to get 16 ohms impeaedence to match w/ my separate Amp head output. Originally in parallel they have 4 ohms. I understand the Fender solid state Amp when in use (Power On & nothing plugged in the add on jack), the assumedly 4 ohm power from the amp will be pushing 16 ohm speakers. I think this is not a serious issue other than loss of volume. This Amp inherently goes from zero to much to loud at only 4 any

...anyway. I wasn't done. Now to my question, assumng my logic is sound so far. Can I simply splice the two wires for the mono input on to the existing Fender Amp output wires, thereby leaving a connection for use as a combo Amp or an external speaker Cab? My concern is will the 16 ohm output signal from the separate head effect the circuitry of the Fender Amp (remember its off). Also is the new input jack safe (nothing plugged in) when theI use the Combo Amp? That was a mouthful. Let's see if you get me?

Wattage don't really matter. In my experience of matching "same ohmage" speakers in parrallel, i find using a smaller wattage speaker with a much bigger wattage speaker does have its own tone. I have used Eminence 16ohm 200watt speakers for "bass" and mixed with Celestion GTs, Sidewinders, and vintage30 16ohm models and they do give out interesting "very decent" mic'd tones as well as non mic'd "cranked up" live tones.! But its really ear preference that will tell you yay or nay..i experiment myself as long as the impedances such as 2 x 16, or 2 x 8ohms are adhered to, you can't really go wrong if you stick to the right match. And its fun putting different wattage speakers together..👍🤘🤘🤘🤘

Hi, Hoping someone can answer a question. I just bought an Orange PPC212, with V30's, and it's rated at 120watts - 16ohm. I am using a Seymour Duncan Powerstage 170 and having the usual drop in power/volume due to it being solid state. I believe it makes just over 40watts at 16ohms. I'm assuming these are 2 - 8ohm speakers wired in series. So, do you think it would be OK to wire the cabinet parallel to 4ohm? And maybe not harm anything? I understand I'd have to be easy on the volume as 4ohm would bring the full 170watts from my amp. Thanks
@tyjutsu96
@tyjutsu96 Жыл бұрын
The SD Powerstage outputs at 4 ohms. Celestial Vintage 30's are rated for 75 watts (I have them too). They most likely ARE 8 ohm, but make sure to double check, because they were sold in 16 ohm as well. Whatever wattage is being sent to the cabinet will split between both speakers, keep that in mind. Think of the volume knob on the Powerstage as a "wattage to the speaker" control. With the speakers in series (16 ohm load) at maximum power from the pedal (4 ohms), you'll only be pushing 43 watts, or 21.5 watts per speaker. With the speakers in parallel, (4 ohm load) at maximum power, you'll be pushing the full 170, or 85 watts per speaker. This *is* more than the speakers are rated for and can damage them, BUT with this configuration the speakers are free to operate as loud as they possibly can be, and I HIGHLY doubt you'll ever have them turned up that high. I play heavy metal with my V30 2x12 wired for 4 ohms and literally have NEVER turned it up more than halfway, even live. It works fine in series as a 16 ohm load but if you are having issues with volume/distortion, it is perfectly safe to wire them in parallel for 4 ohms. You will never need the full volume of those speakers.

@Smoking Goat I don't plan on trying it with my Vox. I've just wondered about series vs parallel wiring in general. I've wondered if one method lends any specific tonality characteristic more than the other. I have played several Matchless amps over the years, and never really bonded with them. They all go for a similar tone as the Vox is known for, but they sound wayyyy different to me. They also respond very different to your dynamics. I wondered how much of that was their parallel wiring.

Really? Thats it? You made this video for newbs, but dont even touch on why you would choose one over the other? Nothing about the wattage interaction, with the different resistance? Phase interaction? Actual tonal differences? Transformer stress per different resistance? This is like giving a driving lesson by saying"key goes here, gas pedal here, brake here, and thats how you drive a car". Pretty lame.
@petougao

Agreed.
@Fender5621
@Fender5621 5 жыл бұрын
@@petougao No. This video has nothing to do with tone or transformer. It is ONLY a electrical connection to match the impedance of the speakers of the cabinet (as a whole) to the transformer in the amp. If the transformer wants 4 ohms then you have to wire the cabinet to BE 4 ohms. As he said a mismatch will affect (wear out) something such as the transformer or output tubes. i do agree that for a multi-speaker speaker cabinet you DO need to worry about phase. If all the same speaker brand/model you can assume that the same tab in the same place on each speaker is the same (call it +) and call the other "-". If the speakers are from different manufacturers then you DO need to determine the "polarity" of the speaker. For instance connect a simple 1.5 volt battery across the speaker leads and note if the code moves out or moves in. For simplicity connect to the battery until the speaker cone moves out. Then label the speaker tab connecting to the + side of the battery as "+" and the other tab as "-". Do this for all the speakers in the cabinet. Then follow this vid's direction. The +/- labelling is actually arbitrary. This example is just to match the tab from one speaker to the "same" tab on the other speaker.
