My original video on half-hot receptacles was made because a contractor friend of mine called me and asked how to wire a half-hot so I just made him a video. It had a million views when my channel got hacked. LOL! This video is better. I tell everyone in the trades to get a license. For one thing, you can charge more money if you're licensed. Thank you for the great video... I just finished installing a half hot outlet from a lighted switch using a 12-3 wire, everything works well thanks to your video.. but the lighted switch is not lighting up red like it is supposed to... Should I wire the white wire and black wire together with a black pigtail connected to the screw to make the lighted switch work ?.. your help would mean a lot... Thanks....

I think every room in my 1957 home need half-hot outlets on one wall. My issue is having old school 2 prong plugs. Some of my outlets have been converted to non-grounded gfci outlets but this is what I really need.

Great video! Any suggestions on doing this with an old work receptacle box, where the wires to the switch are old 2 wire?(I'd have to rip up half a lathe & plaster wall to get to the switch). The wires coming from the panel will be new romex 12-2 w/ground to the receptacle.

My dishwasher/disposal outlet is wired exactly like this EXCEPT the switch loop used in my home is another 12/2. I guess the builders wanted to save money on wires since 12/3 is obviously more expensive than 12/2. Also, the switch controlling the disposal is in a two gang box with an outlet on a different circuit, so there are neutrals present in all boxes.

I really appreciate your channel! I have learned so much. I especially like the 2020 NEC inspired videos. Could you demonstrate with a video showing multiple half-hot receptacles controlled by a 3 way switch network that meets 2020 NEC? I saw a video showing this, but he re-assigned a neutral wire to be hot, and I'd like to maintain the neutral string through each box, plus I don't think this is recommended anymore. I also have to run a 3 way switch network for some lights all on the same circuit, so if I bring power from the panel to the 3 - way switch networks first like I normally like to do, when I end at the receptacles they wouldn't be true half - hot receptacles, they would only be switched if I'm thinking about this correctly. I hope this makes sense. Thanks!

Great video! I have a switched outlet and need to make it half hot but when I break the tab off one receptable works with the switch but the other has no power. When the switch is off both black and white wires don't have power as expected. So, how do I get the outlet half hot?

I didn't need the 12/3 for my use case. I had my switch in a 3 gang with two fully hot receptacles and just jumped a hot off of one of the receptacles to the switch. I then ran two sets of 12/2 one for the fully hot and the other for the switched hot. I probably could have just ran a single 12/3. One switched hot and the other one fully hot. Both neutrals are shared between the fully hot and switched hot on the receptacle. But I didn't have any 12/3 on hand. So just used what I had.

Hi there. Thanks so much for your videos. I was wondering if you can make a video about something? Can you do a video about how and when to get an electrical permit? I've learned a lot about electrical and how to do all sorts of stuff, but I just don't understand the permit side of things. I want to mostly do recessed lighting in ceilings with no attic access nor any existing electrical connections in the ceiling. I want to tap off of a switch controlling an outlet that we have a light plugged into, and make it so that the outlet is no longer switched and the switch controls recessed lights. Basically, I'm not running a new circuit, but just adding to an existing one. I figure I shouldn't have any overloading issue as I'm going from plugged in lamps to hardwired lights. I live in West Chester Ohio and have spent days trying to figure out what I'm supposed to do. Can you explain all the steps and things to be aware about? Thanks so much.

15 A line only (perfectly fine for most lighting circuits.) Can't use 14-x on anything 20A, seeing how most outlet lines are required to be on 20A lines now the thicker wire gauge is needed.

i must be missing something ‘cause i have it wired like shown BUT the red and even neutral are always hot. the source is a 12/2 off a gfci where the black is hot only and white/ground are not hot. it’s only once i connect it to the rest of the wires that everything past the gfci turns hot (white and red regardless of switch being off)

I want to install an in-wall timer for a switched outlet (that is used for a lamp) similar to this and can't find advice anywhere. The only instructions provided are for wall switches connected to a light or fan, not directly to a switched outlet. In the old switch box, there is a single cable with three wires: red, black, and white. The red and the black wires were connected together to one terminal of the switch, and the white was connected to the other. Using a pocket voltage meter, it appears that when the old light switch is in the "off" position, the white wire is actually the hot wire. There is no ground wire in the box. The terminals on the new in-wall timer I want to install are marked line, load, neutral, and ground. I tried connecting the wires in a few different ways, not knowing initially that the white wire was the hot one. Most configurations ended up reversing the lamp and the switch so that turning the lamp's switch on and off actually controlled the power to the timer instead of the other way around. Other configurations made the lamp flicker wildly. Is there a proper wiring configuration that will allow me to us the in-wall timer instead of the existing switch on this switched outlet? Or am I out of luck with this one? Thanks in advance for your assistance - your videos are very professional and I trust you. My dad was an electrician and my sensei but he is no longer with us.

Hi Bill. I’m planning to do this for an outdoor lighting application in a 2-gang box with a switch to control a half-hot receptacle. Is there any reason why I wouldn’t be able to use a GFCI receptacle? I mean if I cut the tab off will the GFCI still be effective for both plugs?

Great video. In an existing scenario like this, is the red wire still called a traveler? Or is it just a substitute hot? Should the red wire be wrapped with a piece of black tape or is it always implied it's a half-hot traveler? I saw this done once with a blue wire (in the US) - wasn't sure if that meant anything different .

Hi Jo! No, the red is not a traveler in this case. It's part of a switch loop with the black. The 12/3 is only necessary to bring a neutral to the switch box. No need to re-mark the red as red is an accepted color for a hot wire in the US. Blue is a hot color too.

On a side note, I love using the WAGO connectors, but I'm seeing a lot of pros panning them, because (especially on 12ga wires) they give you such a small area of contact, thus negating the load bearing ability of the circuit. Thoughts?

Would'nt you want the switched part of the receptacle turning on the light? That is generally why you have a receptacle (at least half as in this video) controller by a switch.

Carlon does call it a fan box but I would put a block behind it and screw it to the block as well.

Where the 12/3 wire is, can I use two pieces of 12/2? I have so much 12/2 wire and I don't want to go out to buy 12/3 if I don't absolutely have to.

You can be use your 12/2 where he used the 12/3, if you pay attention he didn't use the common wire 'white wire' he left it there for future use which it rarely if ever gets used. So as long as you only plan on putting a switch not a switch and a timer in the circuit you're good with 12/2. SIMPLE terms is.. Break the bond clip on the hot side of the recepticle, wire your desired hot recepticle, pigtail a hot 'black wire' off it to the switch and then run your switch controlled hot back to the other half of the recepticle. Very simple.

HOW DO I WIRE A GFCI THAT HAS A SWITCH FOR A LIGHT AND RECEPTABLE AND A COMBO FAN & SWITCH FOR SHOWER LIGHT AND FAN. THERE ARE 4 CABLES COMING INTO BOX . 1 CABLE LINE HAS A 14/3 WIRE, RED, BLACK. does it matter if the "on" line coming from the on position in switch is red or black? I have seen it done both ways but to me it seems the red should be the wire that connects the top terminal on switch with hot terminal on the bottom switched outlet.

@Sparky Channel I didn't expect that! New outlet, I replaced because of this reason, so with that, the constant power is correctly wired, the switch outlet has open ground, I agree my first thought was bad outlet, the odds that both receptacles the old and new are bad is possible but ! Any other thoughts? And thank you for your knowledge and giving back!

New information, now this will be easy for you, thinking I will test the bottom constant power outlet when top switch is turned on, my tester shows no power to constant on, so switch off open ground, switch on open ground and no power to constant power, house is 16 yrs old, lived 10 years, never used constant on outlet, no other problems, or recent work, as i am not an electrician i have watched your videos, i will now test to see all outlets on this circuit to see if something jumps out at me , your videos have helped me make troubleshooting a ton easier i will report on my findings

@@SparkyChannel watched 2 more of your videos, i taped all the outlets associated to that circuit to identify, i inspected 4 outlets rechecked all and now everything is correct, i do have a "dim flickering" open ground to correct fluctuating on the outlet half switch in the off position , in the on it is now correct the switch in non lighted , so the flickering dim correct to open ground could be?
