I've learned a lot from your videos, thank you so much. I have a couple of comments though. I would make the upper one switchable so the the switch would turn the light on and off. The other thing is about the orientation of the receptacle. Electricians and your viewers will understand this but average homeowners would probably not or at least not initially.

Hey sparky, you have great videos. I am dealing with this same scenario but the only difference is the box housing my receptacle has an extra hot and extra neutral. Should I just pigtail them and run a single hot to gold and a single neutral jumper to silver on the receptacle? The switch only controls one outlet that I'm aware of (only one red wire) and there are no other switches in the bedroom. Thanks in advance for any and all help

I do something very similar to this.... but I use two switches at the "source" box, feed by the same branch circuit, and use 12/3 (or 14/3 for dedicated light circuits) between it and the "destination" box(s). it allows two independently switched hot lines (one black, one red) for my basement lights. That way, each "destination" outlet has the ability to turn on/off separate banks of lights with only one run of wire to the outlets, basically halving the required run of wire across the entire basement. Provides the ability to half light or fully light the area for my shop... the main center lights and the secondary rim lights. Where can I get that wire dressing tool you used? I like it.

What if you wanted to add a light on the ceiling how would you add that into this circuit which wires do you connect? Do you take the red wire and wire nut it to the black hot wire coming in from the line and add a new wire to the load 14/2 or 12/2 going to the light where the red wire was?

Hey sparky I have a couple of questions. Are every garbage disposal and dishwasher connected in a half hot receptacle under the sink? Also the breaker on my uncle’s dishwasher pops whenever he turns on his garbage disposal. Is this a short that happens on the garbage disposal and affects the dishwasher since they are both connected under the sink with a half hot receptacle?

My scenario. In the bathroom I have a light powered by a switch on the opposite wall. I am in need of a new outlet on the same wall as the light. I can create a new outlet with power from the light but that would mean it will only be hot when the switch is ON. Is there a way to keep the new outlet hot all the time independent of the wall switch. Remember I am taking power from the light that’s been powered by the switch. Thanks

With a half hot receptacle, is there any convention or regular practice, to determine whether the top or the bottom portion of the receptacle is hot all the time. Is there any reason not to make the top portion switched and the bottom portion hot all the time? in your 3 way switch, you put the red traveler wire on "top" (if I remember correctly). This time you placed the red wire on the bottom. I realize this is not a 3 way switch, but we are using the same 12/3 wire in this application. Thank you again for this video.

Not an electrician, but imma take a wild guess, as I was wondering the same. I think Bill did it this way for illustration purposes. With the receptacle device inverted, if the plug were put in the “bottom”, the cord would run over the “top”. This would mean the tester either couldn’t be plugged in, or the cord would have to be “pulled” forward out of the way to do so. I think he simply did not wish to show this scenario. That said, I would have liked to see either the lamp in the switched portion (for better illustration), or the tester plugged into the always-on receptacle (to show that it was also wired correctly).

@SparkyChannel
@SparkyChannel 3 жыл бұрын
Well I have faith in the engineers at Leviton so I wouldn't anticipate a problem. They do look kind of close though. I never thought of that before. I know the spec grade devices leave more room than the contractor grade. Another reason to use spec grade......
@abpc1x905

Jo: Air is a good insulator and you need to apply 3kV/mm of conductor separation to conduct electricity through an air gap. Typical Leviton tab separation is ~4 mm so you would need to apply ~12kV to the switch for the tabs to conduct between each other. No house anywhere is wired for that voltage. You're safe.

Hi Sparky- in my home one of my bathrooms has a GFCI outlet that only turns on when I turn the light switch on thats on another wall in the bathroom. How do I fix this?
@kevinrobinson3141
@kevinrobinson3141 3 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing that the issue is somebody wiring your bathroom made a simple mistake. If you open your switch there is likely a bundle of constant power black wires, pig tailing off to feed each switch. There is also going to be switchleg wires that run into the other side of the switch so that the light turns on. If one switch has more than one switch leg wire, it's possible that they meant to run the gfci hot wire into the constant power bundle, but mixed it up and put it on a switch instead. I'm making alot of assumptions here but that is a common mistake that I have seen and fixed

Hello, I have a problem. I installed 4 recessed lights with dimmer. Now they flicker. Does somebody know how to find out what is the reason?

Loose wiring can cause intermittent flickering LED lights in fixtures. Try turning off your circuit breaker and examine the wiring, or hire a professional electrician to ensure that your wiring is not loose or malfunctioning.

I don’t understand why you needed that 3rd black wire pigtail, couldn’t you just have connect the second black wire straight to the screw?

If you do such a thing you should take care that the load does not exceed the rating of the switch. I don't know the rating of american light switches, but I guess it's 15A. So it wouldn't be wise to use this for a 20A circuit. For example here in Germany outlets are rated for 16A / 250VAC. The standard light switches are only rated for 10A / 250VAC, but there are special ones available which are rated for 16A especially for that purpose.

Hi Marcel! I used a Leviton Decora Plus Spec Grade 20A Switch. The circuit is 20A and the wires are 12 gauge. "Spec Grade" in the USA means Federal Specification Grade" which is the grade you must use to work on a government job. I always encourage my viewers to use Spec Grade in their homes even though these devises cost a little more. You make a good point that the cheap devises shouldn't be used. Thanks Marcel!

@@SparkyChannel Not only cheap devices, devices which are not properly rated for the task. Like I said, 10A rating for a standard light switch and 16A for the outlet. It will work, depending on the demand of the connected appliance. We also got switches which are designed to switch all active conductors (line and neutral). This especially of interest if you use a grounding system where the ground is not connected to the neutral provided by the service. So the neutral could have a potential deviating from ground potential. But this TT-grounding system is more and more replaced by TN-C-S, which is called MGN in the US (multi-grounded neutral). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthing_system#TT_network

@@Marcel_Germann Excellent! We don't have 10A residential switches here in the US, just 15A and 20A. On a 20A circuit, I prefer to use 20A switches.

@@SparkyChannel Yes, but remember: Our voltage is 230V, so the 10A are 2300W. That's enough for most light fixtures. The 16A are 3680W on 230V. The 15A on 120V are 1800W, the 20A are 2400W. The circuit for the lighting is still fused with 16A in most cases. The lamp will limit the current, there can't be any thermal overload in the lighting fixture, only a short-circuit is possible. The longest lasting switches are the electronic ones which switch at the point of zero crossing. Then the load is minimal, this will reduce arcing in the switch and spare the contacts inside. I got such a switch in my staircase in combination with retraction switches. They look like normal switches but they don't stay in position if operated. They just send a short impulse. www.eltako.com/fileadmin/downloads/en/_bedienung/ESR12np_4873_internet_gb.pdf That's the version for the installation on a DIN-rail. There's also a version for the installation in a junction box.

The first thing I do when I buy a new multimeter is get rid of the test leads that come with it and get Klein test leads that have the screw-on alligator clips. Those push-on alligator clips keep coming loose. I'm a test lead abuser.
