You sir saved me a whole lot of money. I spent forever scratching my head here and found your video right before calling an electrician. Everything was wired properly but nowhere else I looked mentioned snipping the brass piece. Thank you!!

Great video and I followed every step. I made sure I watched it twice, then paused it on every step the third time and went and did the connections one at a time until it was finished. Worked like a charm. Thank you so much for putting this out there, even though it was 9 years ago. Awesome!

Thanks. You solved a headache for me. I did not know about that plate, and changed the outlet. I could not figure out why the switch did not turn off and on. After this video, it took me two minutes and everything is fine.

Thank you. I replaced old outlets wired in 1985, and did them wrong, where the switch stopped working, and I was also mistaken in not snipping the brass tab. I used your video to get an idea on how to correctly terminate pre 2011 wired houses. Whoever did mine did not bother to use black tape on the white wire.

@twopintpete - The same power feed that powers the switched outlet can also drive the power to the overhead light fixture. Simply run a 14-2 romex cable from the light fixture to the outlet and attach the black wire of the romex cable to the feed side of the switched outlet and then attach the white wire of the romex cable to the white return on the switched outlet.

Wonderful video! This was one of the only videos that was easy to follow. I have a follow up question (for anyone): Can I use a timer switch in place of my single pole switch? I have the EI220W Intermatic timer. I have a red (load) wire, white (neutral) wire, green (ground), and black (hot) wire. How can I get this to work? Thanks!
@surferdude642
@surferdude642 2 жыл бұрын
It's ok to do it like this if you're a homeowner, but most electricians won't do this because it's been a code violation since 2011. You would need to use 12/3 or 14/3 and leave the neutral wire capped in the switch box for the possibility of upgrading to a Wi-Fi switch/dimmer. Incidentally, you could also tap into this switch box to add a receptacle down the road. When you come across a switched receptacle you need to know if you're working with 2 circuits or a single circuit as either situation is possible.

Thanks for the helpful tips. My son's room is currently wired exactly how you described in this vdeo. There is no overhead light in the room. They only light comes from what is plugged in to the outlet that is controlled by the switch. I would like to add overhead lighting that will be controlled by the light switch. Can you describe how and where I would connect the wires? Thx...

@PM3520 One reason might be that switched outlets are often mounted upside-down to indicate that they're switched, as in apartments. I don't know if this is a widespread custom or something that's done in the industry; I'm just used to it being that way. Just a guess though. For the record, I agree: regardless of how the outlet is mounted, bottom should be switched and top should be hot. Just makes more sense that way for the reasons you've described.
@PM3520

Thanks -- very clearly explained. Wouldn't it make more sense to switch the bottom and leave the top powered all the time? Presumably, the switch will control relatively permanent objects like a floor lamp. I like to keep the top receptacle open for plug-in loads, and leave the top hot. I've always wondered why people switch the top, and not the bottom.

Hi Mark thanks so much for a great info. Hey so this outlet could work for under my kitchen sink with the garbage disposal right?
@surferdude642
@surferdude642 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, but sometimes they are on the same circuit and sometimes they are on 2 separate circuits, you should understand what it is in your case. If it's 2 circuits you'll normally have a red and a black wire on the hot side and a double pole breaker or 2 single pole breakers in which the levers are pinned together. You can have a red and black wire on the hot side of the receptacle on a single circuit as well. In both cases a 12/3 or 14/3 wires were used, instead of using the otherwise unused white wire as hot like he shows.

I have a question i have removed a lighting fixture from the kitchen it had two lights working off one switch though i replaced one light with a receptical so i could get constant current though the box in the wall only has two wires white & black no ground two wires only, so is there yet a way to have current running constantly to this receptical or will i have to run another wire from breaker box to the receptical in order to get constant current? The toggle switch is wired with two black wires no neutural white wire is connectedto switch though there are five of them that are all wired together, so is it possible to get constant current maybe even just configuring wires in the switch area?

does the neutral from the service panel attach to both silver nuts on the outlet? You said nuts but it looks like it's only attached to one nut. Thanks

Only if you have an unused neutral wire in the switch box.
@dextermorgan4582

so this is probably obvious but I'm still a little un sure 😟 does that mean the top part of the plug does not have a neutral going to it?
@Worrell057
@Worrell057 2 жыл бұрын
I can help with that. The neutral side (silver colored screws) still has a plate connecting the two together, so you can connect your white wire to either silver screw to have a common attached to both top and bottom receptacle.

Henry, i don't offer official help. I have a BSEE degree and 30+ years in electrical design engineering, but since I'm not a licensed electrician I don't feel comfortable giving explicit help. That said, send me a diagram and description of your problem and I'll take a look at it. Can't promise I'll have an answer for you, but I will give it some time. Regards, Mark P.S. Thank you. Prob pretty basic but electricity scares the bageebees out of me. Powertools no; and I lost a finger to them. I was 90% there with the diagrams I've seen but I trust it all better that I've gotten to SEE the real thing, not just colored lines (which don't match my wire colors) on a diagram.

How would you wire a GFI outlet like this?
@nunyabiznis817
@nunyabiznis817 7 жыл бұрын
I don't think you can because in every GFI outlet I have seen, the bridge (aka buss) that you need to cut is inside the plastic casing of the GFI outlet and therefore is not visible/accessible for cutting. Besides, it may be against code to wire a GFI this way even if it were possible.

@nunyabiznis817
@nunyabiznis817 7 жыл бұрын
If you mean that either end of the red wire is not connected to any switch, outlet or light, then they used 12-3 or 14-3 wire without needing it (only needed 12-2 pr 14-2) or they used it just in case they wanted to use it in the future. No worries as long as everything is working and wired properly.
