What's the upside downside to adding or not adding a helical on your vanes? I'm about to start making my own arrows because I know this cool guy on KZfaq that's gives me all this great info. Thanks for your time

I am pretty sure on the Bohning wrap instructions it says to index you first fetching over top of the wrap seem to help with longevity of the wrap

Interesting video, I've always dry fitted my vanes, why? because I watched your other video on fletching with feathers and that's where I learned that tip. I actually never use wraps as I want to be able to remove and replace a damaged vane without needing to do all 3 (or 4) but I only shoot target (bow hunting is illegal in the UK), I also don't tip and tail the vanes, again not much need for target in my view. One question that I've been unable to get an answer to, with an offset or helical, where does the end of the vane (right hand as you're sitting) sit in relation to the centerline/nock? Hard to explain what I mean but lets say you draw a line along the shaft in line with the groove of the nock, what part of the vane sits on the centerline, the tip, the middle or the tail?
@averagejackarchery
@averagejackarchery 7 жыл бұрын
I agree with the downside of wraps being that you have to replace all 3 or 4 fletchings. Real pain. I get what you're asking! I'd say it's definitely not the very end closest to the nock, but not dead center middle either. Probably about a 1/3rd of the way up from the base closest to the nock if you were able to snap a direct line from nock groove to tip of shaft. But I find that the more extreme the helical, the farther towards the middle of the fletch that nock line fits. The closer to straight fletch, the closer to the back of the fletch it moves. But of course with press-fit nocks you can line those up however you'd like once the fletching is done. Hope this helps!

@Flexaret 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks, that answers my question. Regarding damaged fletching, it's obviously different for me shooting target, pass through's are extremely rare but torn vanes are fairly common, I can usually get away with replacing one fletch without a jig if i need too, of course the downside is the amount of care needed to scrape off the remaining glue without damaging the shaft, FWIW I've only ever used AAE Fastset Gel, so far with no problems. I enjoy your videos by the way, clear and to the point, Thanks.

Recently found your channel, you do a great job, love it ! Quick question. Using Fusion X II 2.1 vanes with mechanicals, could I stay with a 3 Fletch? They are kinda low profile, or would you suggest stepping up to a higher profile like blazer or 3" vane? Thanks so much!

@redxj4968
@redxj4968 7 жыл бұрын
SikedMike For arrows? Depends on your length but assuming around a 300 spine. Heavier arrow for hunting, so like 9+ gpi. I know I got Carbon Express Maxima Redstreak 350s that are good for up to an adjusted draw weight of 90lbs and are a little heavier. Havent shot them yet but will when my new bow comes.

Noob question: What is the purpose of the wrap? Do the vanes not adhere well enough to the shaft directly?
@livingadreamlife1428
@livingadreamlife1428 2 жыл бұрын
If you want to remove and change vanes, then a wrap makes clean-up easier. Other than that, there is no tangible benefit. Personally, I don’t use Vanes because it adds a slight weight to the back of the arrow. Preferably, you’d want to add any additional weight to the front of the arrow to increase FOC percentage.

Does it matter if the wrap overlaps onto itself or should it be cut perfectly to the diameter of the arrow to match edge to edge?
@averagejackarchery
@averagejackarchery 5 жыл бұрын
It's expected to have the wrap overlay with itself. I don't know of any manufacturer that recommends otherwise.

While using the Bitzenburger fletch have you had the vanes not line up while doing a 3 vanes 90° ? I been using the jig for while but recently noticed while doing 3vanes, arrow vanes don't line up correctly,meaning two vanes will be closer than the 3rd vane ,I can't tell why it's doing this or ,if it's the arrow moving or nock is twisting while in the jig,or if its inside the jig have you had this problem or any suggestions?

This is the first AJA video with which I've been disappointed. As a new user of the Bitzenberger, I was looking for tips on how to set it up, and that's the one thing he spent absolutely zero time talking about. Compared to setting the jig, things like making sure the arrow is clean and that you remove any excess glue are common sense and not something that is more important than the setup of the jig. This video just doesn't have the thoroughness that I've come to really appreciate in AJA's content.

It cures enough in 5 mins to take the jig out. But have to wait 48 hours? Only 5 mins? I would be afraid that vain is going to move and not have a twist after releasing it in 5 mins or less

You'd be surprised how much dry time 5 mins is. But, if it makes you more confident, leave it as long as you'd like! No harm at all.

@averagejackarchery

I would sometimes get a bum arrow because a fletch would refuse to adhere well to the carbon. Ever since trying wraps I've had that happen 0 times, so I (no pun intended) stick with them. :) Also, the white wrap often let's me know blood color of the critter I shot instantly.
