Here in this video I show you how I wrap arrows using spray paint and fletch them using the Bohning Fletching Jig. This is a real easy process and anyone can do this with time and patience. It's a lot of fun and you can save money by doing it yourself. #archery #howto #diy #hunting #shootingarchery ‪@LanceHanlonOutdoors‬

I have been applying "caps," which is the painted part on the end of your arrows where the fletching goes, for more than 35 years. I have done it all: Bohning Dipping paints, gasket lacquer, dip tubes, all of which I still do when I can obtain the paints, and like you, I am not a fan of wraps, but not for the reason you mentioned. I have weighed arrows that were dipped and painted, and the wrapped arrows are always heavier, and you know, when you add weight to the back of an arrow, you stiffen them! Wraps are not uniform in weight due to the materials used; some are thicker than others. So, I have used automotive and spray paints for the last fifteen years. Here is the deal: the paints are not equal; if you wish to paint other than "white," you need a base coat of white. Pay attention to the prep! That means cleaning, a bit of sanding(light)regardless of arrow material and purchasing a cleaning solution made for arrows is fine. Being the cheap "S.O.B." that I am, I lightly sand the area to be painted; I then use acetone, followed by lacquer thinner, wiped down with a lintless cloth. Primer paint is unnecessary and may cause more trouble than it is worth. I like "Rustolem" automotive paints, but regular Rustolem paint/primer is always a winner. Flat or gloss, you make the call. I hunt, so I prefer the flat, again when I can find it. Once I have taped off the area to be protected, just as you do, I use "Frog Tape" as it provides a cleaner line, and I use paint pens or brush on paint of various colors for my crest. I have learned that two or three light coats are best for the spray crown, and I give an hour between them and 12 to 24 hours before I consider fletching. That covers the variance in temperatures and humidity because I do this year-round; it is 20 degrees outside right now. This allows the paint to cure, as it hardens and becomes more scratch-resistant as it cures. Even though the glue used will adhere to the painted surface, there is a chemical reaction, and sometimes heat is generated between the two. Newer paint may also not allow the area under the fletching to harden if we fletch too soon. When using gasket lacquer, I can fletch in 15 minutes; that stuff dries fast, but I digress. Here are a couple of things to avoid. Don't combine different types of paint, as I have found them to be incompatible. Your fletching glue matters; while many guys love the "super glue," either made for applying feathers or just the regular, I find it a mess to use, so I prefer to use "Duco Cement" or other fletching glues. Fletch-Tite will only work well on spray-painted crowns if the surface is scored a bit, and I mean a bit! If you must use the fletch-tite, you can still save the day by using fine sandpaper, very fine and gentle rubbing on the areas, the feather must be glued on. The best way to do that is to place your feather in the jig, minus glue, using a fine-tipped ink pen, and as closely as possible, draw a line on the edge of the feather, just enough to see it; if you are three fletching, you will have three lines, if you are four, you will have for, and if you are making "Flu-Flu" feathers whatever the configuration, you will have that many, or score the entire shaft where feathers will go. With the arrow ruffed up, you now will have solid adhesion. Otherwise, the other glues will work wonders, but test them before you go all in on your preferred glue. Since I don't use "superglues," 12 to 24 hours of cure time before shooting them is standard. Well, that's it; from my experience, I don't have the time or desire to make a "KZfaq" channel to display my findings, but I do comment from time to time. While my method is more involved, it is still quicker than dipping.. with smelly "Bohning" paints. However, while all of this is true, one of the most significant advantages of this method is the ease of removal of the cap/crown that beats the heck out of wraps again is that all I have to do is pour lacquer thinner, milder, or acetone in a container deep enough to cover the caps, let them soak an hour of so, then using a rag, I just rub it off. I may do it several times to wipe it off, but the feathers(I am a traditional bowhunter)rub right off, and then I am ready to re-fletch. Be blessed.
