How to wrap tamales

Wrapping or folding the tamales can be the most fun part of the whole process. Here are three easy to follow wrapping techniques.

Finally someone that at least know how to wrap so the tamal is one piece. Most people wrap them by leaving half of the masa out.

I found this as a “refresher” for how my grandmother used to make them, but the steps she takes for all of these are overly complicated. For all of these. you don’t need a tie of any sort. Just tuck and fold and let them rest. Once they dry a smidge more, the husk retains its folded shape. Otherwise, thank you. My grandmother passed away this year, and my brother and I haven’t had her tamales since she first became ill in 2016, so we wanted to honor her memory by trying to make them like she did every Christmas. The sad thing is that all we have is secondhand information, because she never wrote any of her recipes down. Your video certainly did remind us of some of the steps that we used to do, so it was great for jogging the memory. Anyway, thanks again, and wish us luck!

I mean... this explains why so much masa was spilling out when my family makes it. They use thick masa and stuff it in there.

I create the ties by just ripping shreds off of the corn husks. Usually I try to find some husks that are ripped or otherwise not great for using as a wrapper and I use those to tear into thin shreds for my ties. I hope that makes sense!

And my masa was more like dough. Dough that was more like where you would press it into the tamale not spread it. When I tried to speed it it wouldn't stick :-(
