Very much enjoyed this, Ryan! I am the same when it comes to feeling that cadences are predictable in my music, and it's so great to hear it from you too! I would also love the link to 'compose what' if that is ok. Excellent work.

Very interesting to see what you did with that theme. I was sitting here saying “No, don’t go in that direction!” the whole time. But that’s the beauty of music, we all hear different things 😀

Great topic! Thanks. I’m glad that you’re discussing the topic of Melody recently (or at least I’ve recently encountered a several of your videos on that topic). A lot of people seem to, in my view, over-discuss Harmony. That’s especially true of a lot of Microtonality nerds like me.

I would like to know that how do you interpret the images of film with music,telling the stories through the music .For example,if I give you a random picture,how do you decide which key,melody you think is most fit for this picture? I think perhaps most people know how to write a motif and hormone ,developing them .Yet not everyone know how to combine their works with the images.
@RyanLeach
@RyanLeach 2 жыл бұрын
That's a great question that requires a longer answer than I can fit in a comment! The short answer is that you try to convert the image to a metaphor and then find musical ideas that match that metaphor. For a common example, if there is a flying scene that feels light and bouncy, the 3/4 meter can also feel light and bouncy. If a character is plotting a murder I might think "that's dark and unsettling, and the Phrygian mode is also dark and unsettling so I'll start there."

Would you say that in songs verses are periods and choruses are sentences?
@RyanLeach
@RyanLeach 11 ай бұрын
I wouldn't say that, either form can be used in any situation. Also for some reasons instrumental music and songs seem to follow slightly different rules when it comes to form. Like a song is usually verse-chorus-verse-chorus where the chorus is the strongest part, but instrumental pieces are more often ABA where the A is the stronger part.

Do you know anything about improvising a fugue? Or just improvising in general? I would love to improve my improvisation skills.
@RyanLeach
@RyanLeach 2 жыл бұрын
I don't even have the piano chops to play a notated fugue, improvising one is beyond my talents! The boring but true answer for how to get better at improvisation in general is practice, practice, practice. It's one of those skills that gets better the more you do it.

As an exercise, you could start by giving yourself a whole note on your instrument, and as you hold it, hear in your head the next long note you want, and play that, and see if you matched the pitch in your head. Repeat the process, and you'll have a hard time just hearing whole notes in your head!

You know the difference between a melody and a theme or ,'motif'?
@RyanLeach
@RyanLeach 2 жыл бұрын
Motif and motive are pretty interchangeable and refer to the smaller ideas and musical fragments. I think theme and melody will also be used synonymously by many people. In his book "Analyzing Classical Form" William Caplin says this about what specifically makes a theme: "Here it will refer to a complete formal unit, which includes its particular melodic-motivic content, its accompanimental texture, and its supporting harmonic progressions. A theme is normally brought to a close by a genuine cadence of some kind. Themes that begin a movement typically fill eight measures of music. But we will see that many themes, especially ones that occur later in the movement, are much longer."

I went with the third because I wanted to keep the maj7, but if I had a G in the melody I'd end up with a nasty b9 interval. And I didn't want to make it just G or G6, so B in the melody it was!
