I'm writing an Epic Poem, so there is probably not a lot of Interest, but I will finish it and publish, because I don't regret starting it lol!

I'm a more of a pantser, I know where it starts, where I want it to go, climax of each characters and the plots, and the ending. In the middle I build the characters and world and story

I think phase 4 is optional. I wrote my first novel entirely for myself, to fill a frustrating gap that the entertainment industry still refuses to satisfy. If one's creative stimulus is fueled by the prospect of critical/commercial success, they are most likely in for a rude awakening these days, or worse: to give up halfway. Write for yourself first, people.

If you were writing for a gap in the entertainment industry, that's thinking of step 4; you are perceiving a market shortage, which means you ought to bring it to market. I'm not into chasing trends when it comes to deciding on stories to write, but chances are if you want something to exist, so does someone else. Of course you should write those things that you wish to exist, but publishing is essential as it is the culminating experience of the work. If you practice the guitar, you should do so with a performance in mind. It's really only an optional step if you earnestly believe you have written a bad story, in which case... repeat step 3. The publishing step need not be intimidating; If you like I can detail every step, including formatting everything (even book covers). As Jesus said, nobody lights a lamp and puts it under a basket.

+David Stewart I don't see it like that: if humanity went extinct safe for one painter, would art become extinct as well because there is no one left to share it with? Wouldn't the artist paint pictures of people everywhere, for no one other than himself to see? I think the concept of art as an outwards effort is overrated. Not that I'm making an argument against publishing tout court: on the contrary, I think that I too would bring my cow to the market if the current state of the editorial business and/or self-publishing offered the prospect to sell it for more than a handful of not-so-magical beans. Which sounds negative, but it's actually a positive message: art is its own reward, regardless of external feedback.

I originally started writing just for myself in high school. But after doing so for 3 years and writing a number of stories, I realized that I was no longer embarrassed to let someone else read it. My writing was at last competent! Except I've been in the revision stage for about 5 years now since that realization. It has been good in that I am now far more than just competent, but it's gotten to the stage of being in limbo. Mostly it's because I don't need to publish my book for the money, as I do alright and am comfortable the way I live. And I don't need to do it for the validation because I know it is great, and the few people who I have let read it know it is as well. It's kind of left me in this place of lacking motivation to get it from stage 3 to 4. It's gotten so bad I haven't even worked on it for a year. I just continually add to it in my head, and never get to the point of putting it down on paper. I know I just need to do it, but I have nothing in my life that is pushing me to do it (aside from the nagging of said people who I have let read it :P). The other issue is that I feel it is inevitable, which is making it never happen. XD

Hey, would you send me one of your stories to read ? I've been suffering from trying to find medium to consume and analyse, so maybe I can do with your stories. If that suits you of course.

would the same advice apply to publishing a comic book/graphic novel? would you consider making a video on that process as well as the market research process?

The only reason I have ever considered writing a book, is to own the story and character rights so that if it were to be option/sell the story I automatically get to write/submit the first draft of the screenplay as per union guidelines. Ideally, I would just adapt one of my screenplays into a book or graphic novel. I had interest at Radical Studios, but they wanted to own all the rights to everything, so I passed. No one is going to take my babies from me. Not nobody, not no-how. Plus, the two films they did sucked, so there's that stigma too. I enjoy books a lot, but as for creating them, I am a visual kinda-guy and would rather show than tell. It's technically against industry standard, but I have had the idea of sneaking in some art sketches into my scripts. Like having a sketch of a new character on the very page they are introduced and whatnot. Since films are visual, I think it could work in my favor. Might try it with my more colorful characters/stories. And I'm definitely a plot-point/road map writer. Planning and research are my primary tasks when I write. I should probably spend more time actually writing hehe.

If making a game was something I could do, then my book would be a Witcher 3 style RPG for the ages... That's not doable as one person sadly, and I lack the computer skills to even do so much as a Stardew Valley. Though I have grown to love the book medium, it allows for so much more than movies or video games can ever do. I personally feel that a game can be just as poignant of a story as a book or movie. It's just a different genre. If one is the type who thinks games are a lesser medium, I implore you to stop watching people play Call of Duty, and go download Planescape Torment, Deus Ex, or Suikoden 2(though it's mostly a retelling of The Water Margin).

Currently writing. Upto 30k words, try for at least 1k per night, though I've done more and less every now and again. The book hasn't really been planned much, I'm just pushing myself to write and improve as much as possible, learning as I go and going back to change stuff when necessary.

I would suggest a 5th phase which would be marketing. This is vitally important, especially if you're self-publishing. You need 4-6 months of marketing before your book is available for purchase.

I suck at phases 3 and 4. When I get done with phase 2, I'm like, "Yes! It's beautiful, it's perfect, it's the best thing since sliced bread! It needs no revision!" Then after about two months I look back at it and say, "It's awful! It's garbage! It's unfixable!" I never really get far with phase 4 because I'm clueless when it comes to marketing, I can't design a book cover for shit and I couldn't sell Dasani to a wanderer in Death Valley.

I loved the video. I'm an airbrush artist who did a children's book about surfing. It's fully illustrated and has a long version and a short version. I've been told that the illustration format I used is better for a toddler flip book but the protagonist is about 10 years old. I've also heard that agents shy away from this kind of thing. I feel stuck. Any thoughts would be appreciated. 🙏

Wrote a sci-fi setting novel and turned to some specialty publisher in Slovenia, who told me, translated: "Your writing style resembles english language sci-fi, and I can't publish that, not unless you change your style into slovenian." Instead of doing that which seemed dumb to me to do, I'm now at year four of translating the fucker into english. As a non native speaker, it's ... well, let's just say my translation and thesaurus tabs are open in perpetuity. Plus, I think quality improved. Is translation revision or will I have to revise the english version? ... I'll have to revise the english version, won't I ... sigh ...

To create something truly original will take a long time. Truly new ideas take time to mature fully in their implications, so I don't think they can be planned for in advance. One big problem is all the low-hanging fruits have been mined: For instance, Shark terrorizing resort town ect... Thus truly original ideas tend to be complex and unexpected in nature, and thus harder to sell: Multiply this "hardness to sell" by a shrinking publishing sector, only interested in safe bets, and you get an absence of genuine innovation. When you finally take the time to really create something new, you will find nobody wants to publish it, no matter how evident and broadly appealing the merits are... Publishers think in terms of what they know: Almost none have a genuine sense of quality outside of a reference to previous things. This is a deformation induced by an excessive knowledge of their profession: The problem is they are TOO professional in a way... This is worsened by the current contraction of publishing, pushing only towards safe mediocre bets. This was not always so: It is amazing to think that in today's environment, almost NONE of the greatest classics would ever see the light of day. The only marginal counter to this appears to be self-publishing: After a few thousand sales and some word of mouth, real publishers may finally come along.

But the problem with self-publishing is you're putting your magnum opus next to the book with the misspelled word on the front cover... -__-
@jeanstravinsky6579

Hadn't thought of that, but hopefully those are not that common, and the silly other covers with matching title key words will look small if you don't click on them. You unfortunately also hear that typical self-published books are selling 30 copies to family members... The trick I guess is to put serious effort into online publicity. The good thing is you can still look for a publisher or agent while doing this: One does not preclude the other. It is becoming more and more accepted. Biggest plus in my view is that at least one version gives you full creative control, but then it is a lot of work to smooth out every single sentence.
