Most people have never thought about what they would do in the moment if they were called upon to deliver a eulogy. Bret Simner tells not only how you can structure and deliver a eulogy but also why you should do it. Bret Simner was born in New York City and has lived in Basel for over 17 years. His education includes bachelor and master’s degrees from the Juilliard School and a doctorate from Stony Brook University. His eclectic work experience ranges from milking cows and bailing hay to playing music on stages such as Carnegie Hall and Versailles. When not teaching music at the Swiss International School, Bret spends his time trying to keep up with his daughter’s scooting and his son’s fastball. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

@claudiah.2935 Thank you for sharing. My husband's funeral is this Friday. Right now I am so traumatized that all I can see/feel/hear was that awful moment that feels like it will never end. @@momzilla9491 I am so sorry for your loss and can’t imagine what you must be going through right now. Tell everyone about the wonderful man who you had (have) the privilege of loving. Share the sweet things that no one else got to see; your best memories together, the silly little things he did. It may be one of the most heart-wrenchingly difficult things you’ll ever do, but you only have to speak your eulogy one time. Just once. And you will feel some weight lifted off of you when you’re up there smiling and speaking so adoringly of him. You are going to do great. Again, I am so sorry for your loss. So many hugs to you and your loved ones during this devastating time. ❤️

My children all spoke so eloquently at His funeral and I was so impressed with their strength to do such and yes some tears were shed but lots of laughter too. My heart goes out to us all at such times of enormous sadness but may the Lord bless us all as we give honor to our loved ones as I will now have to at one of my best friends’ funeral. This is a tricky one: On the one hand you don't want to totally keep the emotions buried, however, on the other, you want to be able to physically make it through the moment. In the past, I chose to stay humorous and warm until the final thoughts. However, after presenting this talk, I had to give the eulogy for my mother. There, I let the emotional material come earlier, not following my own advice. That is a mistake that almost cost me....I had to take a break, then a deep breath---only then I was able to get back on track. Sorry that you're going through this; I'm sure you were great.

I needed to learn this. This video took the impossible brutally painful challenges away to make it definitely possible to be done properly. An example here would be my Nanny, who was too important not to. I'm sure we all know someone exactly like that, before we take a real look around and realize how many people there are just like this, including you and me! I want/wanted to get the things out that she deserves to be said about her. So many people did a great job when they were alive and are truly invaluable, and irreplaceable. They deserve to have something said about them and all they've done. So many people are completely worth this and more.

In the last 4 years, I have been tasked with eulogizing my father and my mother. I think one important piece that is missing is that it's completely normal and ok to have some moments where your emotions are overwhelming. With that said, it's also important to know your limits. If you can't get through it, please ask someone else to do it. There's no shame in saying, "I don't think I can do this at this time." If you're reading these comments because you're sitting down writing the eulogy for a loved one, I am sorry for your loss and wish you peace.

My Dad just asked me to do his eulogy. It is a strained relationship and I am not sure why he picked me. Other that to remember that he was a good guy in the end. Thank you for your help with the cadence of how it should be done.

I hear you. This is particularly difficult when there are unresolved issues. I was going to mention this but wanted to keep the talk compact. The actual mourning process, in my opinion, starts after the funeral and the eulogy. This talk was intended to be a tool to get through the funeral. After that comes the year of "first times" without the person you lost. This is the most challenging part. Hang in there and take it one day at a time. 🙂

I'm literally writing my grandmother's eulogy right now. I probably only spent 5 weeks of my entire life with her that I recall. At first I felt that I couldn't encapsulate her legacy accurately. Here I am persevering the same way she did.

Currently writing a eulogy. This video doesn't do the job for you, but it shows you how to go about it. I am not done writing, but I am well along my way and I can tell I am on the right path. My advice to anyone writing one is that there isn't one way to do it, and you may need to start and restart a few times, but you'll know when you have it right. It will feel good. Good luck to all.
