My story is more of a fusion of fantasy and mystery. With my main character going from being curious about something being wrong through one peculiar event and gradually evolve into striving to find evidence and confront the main villain to stop their reign of corruption for his nation and the ones he cares about Ace Attorney style. Knowing he won’t be doing this alone. While on the side of fantasy, he goes through a magical journey of self discovery as he tries to help others in different towns/cities through either challenges to test his mayoral leadership or in everyday life while in the process learning to deal with his inner fears, struggles, and hidden personal trauma. It will be a combination of his friends support, his main rival/childhood friend’s serious honesty and compassion, and himself to fully understand and embrace who he is as a whole, breaking his false beliefs. For my story, magic in their world comes from the soul and their values so each person can have a unique variety of powers, colors, or animal transformations depending on their character and core values. The corrupt system established for longer than my main characters been alive tries to suppress and label them into specific covens/characteristics like the Coven system in the Owl House. Making free-willed value magic a thing to be feared while in truth it’s their magic or personality in their truest form with no harm intended to anything living around them. Through this magical journey he will also get to know the villain and they will know each other quite well at the end with mainly a Owl House Luz and Belos kind of hero/villain relationship. Both will be just as human with their virtues and flaws as they are fictional characters. By the end, with the help of his newfound friends and family, he will have mentally/emotionally transformed enough to confront the corruption within the magical system their in and bring the root of it all to justice. Of course it won’t be the only happy ending to my story arc, his friends, former rival, and himself have gone through hell and literal stress and trauma to get to this point and will eventually write a second book to dive into their inner turmoil and emotional journey. They’re only human after all, no one is perfect and painful events, problems, or scars don’t fade away that easily. That’s all that I wanted to write for this comment. So do I understand correctly that if I want to write a romance novel that subverts the genre, the subversion definitely has to come before the resolution? Your advice regarding contrasting the ending to the begin was great to hear out loud, since I feel like this is something one tends to do automatically but hearing it explicitly is definitely more helpful!

Here are my thoughts: • The Protagonist simply wants to defeat his archenemy, but he is unsure about saving innocent lives. • His Sister wants him to give his heroic role a chance so they can save not only civilians, but also their family. Protagonist says that he accepts, but will do so once. • Both fought many enemies without killing, showing mercy onto them. • Afterwards, the Protagonist and his Sister accepted themselves as soldiers and saviors of humanity. What do you think?
