The inciting incident of my story starts in chapter one. The protagonist, Hoyt, who was married to a woman called Sue, discovered that his sister, Bertha, was murdered. As he had no idea who murdered Bertha, plus that he felt he himself may also become a target of the person who murdered Bertha, he decided to move away to another province with Sue. The only thing Hoyt didn't know, was that moving to another province wasn't really going to keep him safe (because Sue was the one who started it in the first place, she solicited Bertha's murder, and she was also planning to kill Hoyt, only that her plan did not go as expected because they moved so she had to find a new opportunity to kill Hoyt, but her new plan also failed in the end).

Very helpful advice! Especially the part that the repercussions of the inciting incident should be felt through the rest of the story gave me an idea to move some plot points around which I feel could make my protagonist's motivation much more effective!

Such a formula even works in children's books. One of my daughter's books, which is about lying, has the inciting incident be a girl wants to play catch inside, but no one will play with her, so she plays by herself.

I once read somewhere that the inciting incident should appear, I think, within the book's first five pages.

As early as possible is definitely a good tactic to keep reader's attention.

@@NourZikra That's why I rewrote Mystical Greenwood to have the gryphon appear early in Chapter 1, especially since there's a prologue.

I’d like to add that for the inciting incident, you have to make your character uncomfortable and make them care. If they don’t care, then what’s the point? The inciting incident in my current WIP occurs in the middle of the second chapter. My main character is a pirate who gets uncomfortable with the idea of being kicked off a crew (it’s also the third pirate crew he’s been apart of). The previous crews he was in he quit and left before they got a chance to kick him out for his childish and pranking ways. Before he even gets the chance to do that this time, he’s marooned (kicked off the ship and left on a deserted island).

In my story the inciting incident happened in the second chapter the protagonist learned the dark truth about the knight’s in purple.

Oh good, I was worried the characters struggling to find an easy direct solution for it was a bad thing for some reason. Like it was just too much in the mid story. I guess ill just see what the alpha readers and CPs say, if i get that far
