Great video Justeen. Been thinking which direction to go with my career and I was debating between Product Designer or Product Manager. This really helped me figure it out. I'm definitely more qualitative than I am a quantitative so Product Design definitely makes more sense.

Great to hear! They are very different and require very different skillsets! I recommend trying to do a few projects in both roles and get a feel for them :)

Could you do one "How do designers work with other designers?" I find that sometimes it might be difficult to work with other designers when they are pretty competitive 🤡
@Justeen15

Hey! Thanks for the comment! Yeah that would be a good one to cover. Let me add that to the backlog. Which aspect do you find hard it to work with another UXD? During the brainstorming phase? Wireframing? Do you have an example?

@@Justeen15 It's not that simple. We want to know how to promote collaboration in a cutthroat economy. How do we work with designers when we are all competing for the same jobs? How do you balance "mentoring" with diluting our competitive advantage? I'll give you $100 if you can make a step-by-step explaining this wicked problem, mate. 😉 Nice video, btw! 👍🏾

@@selinovaldes What is not that simple, can you provide more context? When you work at a company as a designer, you shouldn't be competing for the same job. Unless the company is set up improperly, there won't be 2 designers working on the same thing. Each product design at a company is responsible of their own product. Mentoring shouldn't dilute existing designers' "competitive advantage". It's not the same as what you give is what you lose. This is simply not quantitate that you teach 10 things to an mentee and you lose 10 things. - There are lots of subtle nuances you nurtured over the past years of learning that the mentee won't know because you don't even know you have them. - You also learn new things mentoring someone so you are also gaining experiences. So I don't think this is a wicked problem. I am happy to take the bet and make a video for it 🤓

Hi! What about research? Do PMs share responsibility in the ux research phase? For instance, should a designer expect PMs to give them features to design based on research the PM did?
@Justeen15
@Justeen15 4 ай бұрын
Hi Dave! Thanks for the comment! This is a very great questions with lots of nuances to it. Just a few points: - PM and UXD are on the team so they should freely loop each other in their work. For example, PM can invite at least, not force them to attend, some of the meetings their had with the business team. UXD can invite PMs to brainstorming sessions, user discovery research sessions. - PMs know nothing about users are not good PMs - UXDs know nothing about product and business are not good product designers - If one person has to own UXR completely, that should be UXD, not PM (if you reaaaaaally need a line to be drawn haha) - PM still had their digging/research to do, like industry trend, market size, successful products in the past, but not too common I would say super user-centered research. On the other hand, UXD are user-centered, so it's our responsibility to interact and research users. - However, I have worked with PMs who did "user discovery research" on their own and I was not aware of or looped in. That happens but that's not right. I am all for PMs know more about users, but if UXDs are excluded from it, they are not great PMs and collaborators. So short answer, PMs may ask UXDs to design something based on their own user research. I don't think that's the right approach and the responsibility is mixed in the wrong way. Does that help? Hope my long comment does not overwhelm you.

@@Justeen15 thank you so much! This makes a lot of sense to me. So it really seems like the collaboration is still the most important part here to make a successful team but its good practice for the uxd to be involved in any user centered research happening by a PM and vice versa. Also it is good for the uxd to be aware of the business/marketing trends and goals the PM is focused on so the design solutions are a dress business AND user needs. The reason I asked is because I recently had an interview with a PM that said they were the ones who owned the research and knew the customer needs best. So it's sounds a bit like the other situation you mentioned which had me a bit confused in where the uxd could bring value to the process and team outside of ui design. This was for a junior role so maybe that is why the PM was owning more of the research/pain point identification. But this helps me understand the PM/UXD relationship in a more common scenario and what I should be expecting.

@@Davindalark Yep, right on! Your confusion is valid. You could probably probe into that PM's POV and get a sense of what the collaboration is like, which give you better insights into what kind of company you might be working for (or not :P). I don't believe in PM owning all research for a junior UXD role, because it won't be the case that a senior owns business needs when they are hiring a junior PM. UX has been quite undervalued, mistreated, and misundertood by others most of the time for a long time. It has improved over the years but nowhere close to what it should be for most of the companies. If you want to chat/learn more, I set up a Discord community: discord.gg/z8MHcfpZRQ. Feel free to say hi in the channel and ask questions there! Cheers!

@@Justeen15 What about when user research can potentially influence the requirements of a project - That seems like the research would be carried out by the PM, not the UXD, because it would be pre stage 1 of the project. What do you think? P.S This is the best video I've seen on the topic!

since designers don't have to care about the quantified metrics, how do we prove our value / impact ?
@Justeen15
@Justeen15 Жыл бұрын
Product designers actually need to care about metics since they are “product” designers. They don’t implement the actual analytics but instead should work with product managers to define what needs to be tracked and how to measure success of the design. E.g. I worked on a project to redesign the item customization experience. To prove my design is effective, I would need to work with the PM to define “add item to cart time” as a metric to track. If the new design ends up to be faster than the old one by 10%, I can say my design help to make the product better in add to cart speed by 10%. Does that make sense?
