In this talk and tech demo, filmmaker Diego Prilusky introduces the next chapter in moviemaking: volumetric video, a 360-degree experience powered by hundreds of cameras that capture light and motion from every angle. Check out how this technology creates a new type of immersive storytelling -- and catch Prilusky's reshoot of an iconic dance number from "Grease" captured with volumetric video.

This was really cool. Heck you could still do "2D" movies with this tech but give the director the possibility filming the scene any way he/she wants in post.

this will be great for training simulations for highly dangerous tasks/skills, and to enhance museums. being able to do a walkthrough of ancient scenes and look anywhere you want during the action...

@john smith Not every viewer experience should or is desired to be completely passive. Maybe on some days you want to sit on the couch to chill and that's fine, but what if on other days you are suddenly curious about what is beyond the lens. Imagine a scene from your favourite movie where people are sitting around a round table having a discussion. Have you ever been curious about how your favourite characters are reacting to a line when they are off the lens? It's this freedom of choice that is what is so amazing. You can be either a passive or active viewer; You are no longer just a viewer but an explorer as well.

From what little I know of related stuff, called photogrammetry, it seems like they'd have an awful lot of problems coming from not having cameras in closer, getting details from things like, for example, armpits. I expect that's why it looks so glitchy. And I don't know how they're going to fix it. But it's neat, I hope it goes well.

They'd probably develop smaller versions of the dome with cameras to surround one or two actors and do another "take" of a specific scene to get any of those close up-detail shots.

Not for entire movie capturing..can be used in action scenes..or in the production of some special movies (YNWIM) Its great for VR..contents in future.. Also for motion capturing in vr games... The effort they put behind..awesome..every new tech develops like this...the image processing they use will be a back bone in VR field.. They can modify the system to use outdoors...by using a system of drone cameras distributed around the 360• space.. Controlled by a single unit...can contract and expand ...thus changing the volumetric space....wow awesome.. I think, that is their next target...👍

The approach he’s explained is used for a while already to make such flying around camera effects in modern movies. And if we’re talking of moving the whole video to 3D, cinematic video games do it already for about 20 years. Also, he touched some technical aspects and mentioned voxels. There is no way you can save detailed (!) space of like 100^3 meters in voxels. It will be an enormous amount of data. They must still use polygons (triangles) to describe the surfaces at some point anyways. So, I’m not really sure about what discovery the whole talk is, that’s all been used in the industry for a while.

I had another idea that I wish caught on by now. This talks about a multiple different angles of the same scene, but what about the same scene acted multiple different ways? We are in the digital age, no more VHS tapes, so why not have a movie use this and be slightly different every time you watch it? It would give the actors a lot of creativity in doing the same action multiple different ways. At the bare minimum all the important story points would have 4 or 5 versions, but a director could go crazy and shoot _every_ scene 2 or 3 ways to make the entire movie different. Make it pick the next scene at random so it's never the same movie twice. Perhaps there's more than one satisfying ending to the story too, so your friend sees a different ending than you did. I just thought that would be really cool and make everything very rewatchable, even more so than volumetric video. I'm not sure how volumetric could be utilized. People aren't going to get up and walk in circles just to watch the movie. I guess you could make some rotary park ride out of it that moves for you. If the target is people who want to sit down and watch something, it's cheaper and easier just to make a 3D story driven video game. This is a huge challenge trying to practically implement this

Problem is, with this technology, reflective surfaces cannot be represented. And every surface is reflective, even if you think it isn't. It's called the fresnel effect and it is very important for realism.
@terrencegunther

I guess this isn't really that good for VR and moving yourself around to watch a film. As a filmmaker, this is sick af, because you can get any shot within a scene you shoot, and leave it all for the edit to choose the shots you want, which means the director can actually return to the old days of how plays were created for audiences, and focus on the acting and elements of that scene. Actors have to repeat their lines and scenes because directors need different angles and shots in scenes, but with this, you can just get one take of the actors, and have all the shots for the editing ready to go. I guess close-ups arent that good yet and probs will take up heaps of storage for all those high def cameras to get into the details of someones face without making it look unrealistic, but maybe in the very far future this might come in handy. For now I think its still good that actors have multiple takes to get something right, kind of like rewriting your script over and over to get more detail and ideas for your story, as these cameras might mean that actors will probs be rushed to get their performances out for a studio, meaning worse acting as a whole. But yeah this would be sick for editing and just getting every shot conceivable within a scene, at your fingertips.
@terrencegunther
@terrencegunther 4 жыл бұрын
tl;dr - Yeah pretty cool, but means some areas will lessen in effort and practice, like acting, due to amount of coverage you can get within a scene all at once. Would be pretty large files, but great for editing and choosing where to place frame all in editing room.

Nah this is can be a tool for 2d movies but this can replace 2d movies and nothing will ever replace 2d movies because the art will be gone for example cinematography, composition, the real art in movie making is to view what director wants to you to see and how like in Dunkirk camera never was placed where a person can never reach, and like blade runner how composition in the frame of straight lines and shades were symmetrical, here one can view from any angle

What makes this guy think that viewers want to be camera operators or it's any way better than camera angle and movement chosen by professional operator? "Horse cam" was his pitch, I guess. People have been strapping action cameras on pets ever since they entered consumer market. No Oscars won on any of such experiments. Tape camera on horse's nose and get your shot. No need for supercomputing camera dome.
