I think it’s money. in other words sponsorship is very hard to come by for jumping. Look at Running, all distances , recently long distance , it’s workable . Ppl actually run or could run if they want ….hence the shoes, shorts , singlets, t-shirts, caps, sleeves, nutrition …etc. Some sports just naturally wait for generational talents.

Because athletes aren't juicing as much nor is the cheating detection as bad as in the 80s. 😂

There must be some upper limit to human ability. We may be at or near those limits in many events. It may be that the limit was approached sooner in the long jump than other events. Of course I'm sure people thought the same way back in 1968.

well, a couple of things holding it back....I do think other sports like Football and basketball due to the financial potential sway a lot of athletes away from track and field........so, most likely there was someone who we will never know of that could have come close to these records..

That earthquake, which killed several members of his family, including his father, was devastating to him, and reportedly affected his athletic performance (for the worse, btw). That indeed happened to him “later in life”, in fact, a year and a half after his greatest jump, when he was 23 years old. Had it not happened, who knows how much longer his career could have lasted, or how much farther he might have jumped?

It's about 3.5 inches. You can calculate this using projectile motion dynamics with inputs for initial velocity, angle of launch, and initial height. What you are solving for is the distance traveled for an object falling from two different heights. There's one thing that does not change in the long jump, and that is that the ground is always at ground level! Height of center of mass (COM) at takeoff is one of the biggest factors in long jumping at the elite level. The parabola is a function of that height and the takeoff angle. Think essentially of the slightly longer time it takes for a ball to drop off a table if the table is two different heights. Now consider both tables moving at the same speed horizontally. When the shorter table's ball lands, the taller table's ball is still travelling in air. More briefly, a taller athlete starts at a higher point and all athletes fall to the same level. There's zero doubt to me that Emmiyan would have been the likely WR holder if he was above 6' tall. Now think about a jumper with Usain's speed and height of COM...!

It is called the hang technique and may be the best technique.The hitch kick is meant to stop the body from rotating forward, If you can hang perfectly you don't need the hitch kick.

Why weren't the other competitors breaking at the very least their own PBs? Cos they were not, not by a long shot. Beamon had leaped post WR in training before and Emmiyan leapt quite consistently well at every altitude. They were just so good. Height from sea level does nothing to tarnish their feats. Nobody else came close in the same conditions, in Beamon's case not even current world record holders who were out for the gold. Don't forget that Ter-Ovanesyan had jumped 8.50 pre-Mexico in training.

Well maybe but….there is the theory that, along with him jumping at altitude (8000 feet), prior to Beamon’s record the air was ionized due to a thunderstorm that arrived minutes after his record jump, thus electrifying the atmosphere.
