Wonderful video. A. Lange & Sohne has some great videos on the finishing process. You can see how the watchmaker creates the different finishes. Amazing stuff. Wish Michael well in his next endeavor.

Agreed. Lange’s videos really drive home where the true cost of finishing comes into play. I appreciate it but would not have the patience to perform it.

Lange should introduce the Lange Seal, as it would really garantee long term confidence in the brand, considering it's a Richemond brand. So Richemond would never be able to mess with Lange in the long run. Somebody - perhaps a well known collector - should pitch this idea to the CEO Wilhelm Schmid.

Very good, instructive video. Shame A.L&S isn't mentioned, as they have their own finishing techniques, and use German silver for their movements.

Fantastic!! I love and appreciate these educational videos -- almost as much as I do looking at a wonderfully finished watch. (almost 😊). These videos add time and more joy to my watch watching. What I mean is now that I know more I appreciate more, and then I run to my watch and look for the design and finishing elements you've mentioned. These videos are the most important videos for any watch collector. I read another comment here: "The Classworm Series is 💯." That response summed up all I meant to say in 5 long sentences. Darn. Wish I had just said, " "The Classworm Series is 💯" 😊

I'm beyond impressed with the finish work on the new VC Overseas 5100 movement.. I mean mostly if not all hand finished, Geneva Seal... what else can you ask for? Not just the older VC's but most (pretty much all but some of the ref 56) movements are Geneva Seal ..

Fun fact: the black that gets reflected comes from the loupe or microscope or sometimes the black part of your eye. It has nothing to do with absorbing light.

I'm a bit confused, you mentioned Côtes de Genéve but, the watch shown was an A. Lange & Sohne. Isn't Côtes de Genéve just for watches made in Switzerland or it's just a term to refer to the finishing?

Are ETA or Selitta simple calibers finished by hand? For example perlage or Côtes de Genève applied on Tag Heuers Caliber 5?
@user-dr7tb4xf4o

ETA and Sellita are machine finished movements. Additional hand finishing may be applied to them, but I don't think that's the case with Tag Heuer Calibre 5.

@@user-dr7tb4xf4o Do You know aby hand finished affordable movements?
@georgebeckford728
@georgebeckford728 4 жыл бұрын
@@ArtBorow Glashütte Original comes to mind as the most affordable, even though not as much on the most affordable models... Even JLC has mostly mashine-finished applied on more affordable watches. Perhaps used Parmeganis perhaps. But that would be a great question to Tim. I was surprised recently, when he said in the AP Royal Oak vs Grand Seiko video that the Royal Oak movement is mainly mashine-finished as well now even though it earns the Geneva Seal.

I’m always intrigued by movements that use different movement finishing, such as De Bethune polishing the entire movement, or other brands using satin brushing instead of cotes de geneve. After all, the purpose of perlage and cotes de geneve was to catch microscopic dust particles that would encroach inside the case of early pocket watches and wrist watches, which is no longer an issue, as everything is at least dust proof as a bare minimum these days.

Why start with brass?
@kegluneqs1011
@kegluneqs1011 3 жыл бұрын
Brass has many qualities requiered for a movement (softness magnetism cost etc...) But you can have other materials such as gold in F.P Journe or German silver in Lange. Moreover not all the component of a movement are made with brass tou will also find steel (screws), iron alloy (stem), zinc, nickel, tungstene etc...

I notice these subtleties in my nicer watches and people think I'm crazy for how much I spend on watches, but the human touch that is added to the piece is meaningful to me. When you say Pealage is hand applied, is this fully hand applied, individually with a hand tool, or done with a power tool by hand?

I think movement finishing is the most interesting part of a watch, and deep striping really moves me, but I'm not a super baller. I'd love to get my hands on some kind of list of the best under-5/10k finishing

I heard finishes were put on movements to originally collect bits of crud and dust that got caught in the watch before watches could be hermetically sealed.
@johnwayne7476

That sounds correct. Idk ? Not a watch mechanic or jeweler . I know some about engineering. This sounds like good reckoning. Such is so when one retaps a stripped blind hole out to the next bigger size. One puts common grease on the tap to collect the shavings as the tap cuts them. Otherwise the shavings could damage the bearing surface on critical internal movements in machinery. I have used this process while fixing petro engines . The gap of the stripes would work in much the same manner . It’s gotta go somewhere that’s for sure. I have been told common lighter fluid is very useful when cleaning up corroded watch internals . Place movement in a sonic filled with lighter fluid . Let the vibrations do the work then the excess will vaporize leaving a clean dry internal.
