Patience, soft words, and repetition are the most important parts of training a milk cow. We are happy to announce that with lots of hard work and lots of behind the scenes coaching (thank you to ‪@TheMacs1‬ , @vaughanfamilyfarm, and lots of binge watching ‪@theJustinRhodesShow‬ ) we are now ready to start milking our sweet Patty! We just need her to give birth!
Thank you all for following our Family as we learn to raise our own food and make our homestead the best it can be!

Impressive! Few questions: are you going to put milk stand in a covered area eventually? Also, would a ramp be easier, to walk up than step up to milk stand? Great job!

Eventually we will be on a covered area...it’s something we still have to build. A ramp will also be part of that build. Great questions Tricia!

First of all i thought you were holding someone's hand in the beginning of the video haha. I got a Jersey and calf about 3 months ago with no experience at all. Even though they are small cows they are still big animals and that is very intimidating. They have no concept of their size and could easily hurt you. I like that you have a kick bar on your stanchion, I don't and had a roundhouse kick go by me while I was swatting flies on her. Sometimes while I'm leading her around around she gets playful and jumps and kicks. They are beautiful animals and I'm happy to have this experience.

This is the best video I’ve found on this. I’m in the same boat you were, exactly! My Dexter is older and has horns but pregnant. I’ve got her where she’ll eat out of a bucket and let me touch her up to her shoulders but I’m lost on how to get a halter on her!

Great video. My husband just brought home a bred dexter heifer and her 6 month steer. Mom has horns and has never been handled. It’s my first experience making friends with a cow. I’m very intimidated and nervous. Thanks so much for your video and all the great tips.

That is awesome! good luck, and it should be fun. We havn't had any too many dangerous problems with the horns. Just speak the cows language and they get used to you and respect you.

Thanks for the tip! We have also talked to a vet about weighing the horns...it helps to kind of sag them down but makes them less dangerous!

Awesome video. The fact that you had a friend that was an Animal Psychologist is just so fortunate in keeping you both safe and in harmony with each other. What a gift for both of you. Great advice all the way through. Well done!

Definitely! We are thankful to have friends that are smarter than us! LOL. We are learning so much, and are grateful to have some smart people to rely on.

Thank you for sharing your experience of learning how to handle a new large animal. Until last year, the largest livestock we had were rabbits. Then we got a full-grown pot belly pig and, like you, found that repetition of a routine was very useful.

Ok so I don’t know much about cows so these may be dumb questions but: 1) Why do you leave the horns on? 2) Why does the stanchion have a floor rather than just the ground?
@4KidsandaFarm
@4KidsandaFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Great questions Jacob. (How are you doing by the way?) The horns are still on because we bought the cows that way 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♀️...they can be removed but it’s really expensive and the cows have huge arteries that go through their horns so removing them can be super gruesome. As long as we respect them...and believe us we do...they should never be a problem. The milk stand is raised for both cleanliness (we can spray it off) and convenience (we can move it whenever) and body mechanics (we raise the cow up...we have to bend less)...that may end up being the most important because we can milk for about 30 minutes so you can get tired pretty quick if you ain’t sittin’ right 😊

any chance your friend has a channel that would help in training a heifer to not use horns?
