I worked in produce for 22 years and was always asked to pick out watermelon for the customers. You all are spot on I always told the customer look for a yellow belly, dry stem and hollow sound. And yes with seeds are better 🍉 🍉 Also Happy 4th to the Coyotes and everyone on the channel

I use the thump to make sure it doesn't sound dead which I think is the best indicator if it is cracked inside and over ripe. I use all the other indicators for if the sugar is high, things like a yellow tummy, dry stem, dried sugar spots at the stem, etc.

The watermelons that most people are buying have the following attribute with respect to marketing only. They are easy to ship, they are not particularly large, they do not contain many seeds and they can be picked before they are ripe.. The watermelons that people buy today, including myself are watermelons that have been manipulated to fit the previous mentioned attributes, if you can call them that. Gone is the really big watermelon with lots of seeds and red ripe and sweet. Something is missing from what people think are watermelon today.

I'm not sure why, but cooling off a watermelon in a cooler of ice tastes better than a watermelon cooled off in a fridge. In the past, roadside produce sellers would " plug" a watermelon for you, to show you it was okay. I like the " original" watermelon as well . I ate the seeds and it never bothered me. To me, the " original" watermelon, cold, tastes best. No salt or anything, just cold watermelon. One of my aunts claimed the greenish white part of the watermelon was poisonous.

One year Grandpa raised watermelons in an ole creek bottom and he had extremely good luck cause them was the biggest watermelons I'd ever seen !! One morning several of us kids cut open 5 or 6 of those melons and ate watermelons til we bout founderd, Grandpa sure was mad cause something got into HIS watermelons, we never did tell him any different either cause he'd tore up our backside !!! LOL To answer Y'alls question, I agree with Mr. Coyote, I like the long melons with the seeds !! Hey Y'all have a safe 4th of July !!!

My mother would cut it up for me and take the seeds out. Sometimes I buy it now already cut up. It's expensive.

I use the yellow spot and the thump method I'm going to have to employ the brown in the navel from now on i bought a melon at Kroger a couple of weeks ago and it was almost over ripe and I also like salt on it don't care much for salt but I like it on watermelon I guess it's the sweet and salty aspect of it the seedless is the way to go
