Sweet corn is where it all began for us on our produce operation nearly 30 years ago! Today we planted our first of 10 plantings for the 2020 season. This was a 6 acre planting of our 35 acres of sweet corn that we grow for over a dozen Farmers' Markets and roadside stands that we set up at during the summer. We use a 1964 John Deere 3020 and a 1979 John Deere 7000 four row planter.

I have been watching too much millennial farmer with fancy tractors and electronics. I grew up on a produce farm and we used an antique 2 row planter for most things and then a 7000 after we wore out a couple two row planters and couldn’t get parts anymore. We had looked at getting a Monosem planter but never pulled the trigger. Dad still uses the 7000 and plants pumpkins by hand with a little manual planter, the kind that has the spring loaded dispenser at the bottom that you step on and tilt the planter to let the seed out. He puts in probably 5 acres like that, usually in one day sometimes with a head lamp on into the night. I hope we get some warmer temps to get the plants a good start that isn’t too wet. PS I hiked Scenic View and Archers form last weekend. Had a blast. Keep the great content coming.

Yeah, ol’ Zack will spoil ya, lol. We do use some pretty fancy equipment for our 1000 acres of corn and beans but I have been pretty happy With how the 7000 does for the produce operation. Your dad sounds pretty hard-core, and really driven to plant that many acres that way, wow! In addition to millennial farmer I also enjoy watching Cole the Corn Star, Brians farming videos, my neighbor, Harmless Farmer and Sas Dutch Kid, a dairy farmer in Canada. Glad you enjoyed those trails in WNF, I need to get back down there. Thanks Dan!

I almost bought a monosem planter a few years ago myself but figured why spend the money when the 7000 was working just fine.

I used to grow peaches and cream and Kandy Korn on my small garden. One year dad wanted some seed for hominy. Those stalks must have been 7’ tall. Ohio corn is the best tasting in America. Hands down!
@jasonwish-
@jasonwish- 4 жыл бұрын
That variety has been around for quite a while and was very popular. The improvement in seed genetics has been amazing over the past few years: eating quality, husk quality, ear size, rows of kernels, shorter stalk height, cold soil vigor, disease resistance, the list goes on and on. Ohio does grow some great corn! Thanks!

@@jasonwish- how do you control raccoons especially with the shorter height varieties? Also are you planting GMO or conventional varieties? Thanks
@jasonwish-
@jasonwish- 3 жыл бұрын
Eric Conkey raccoon are definitely our biggest nemesis. My son traps 50 to 100 each winter and also another couple dozen during the corn harvest season. We put up an 8” electric fence only around our first early planting of two acres. They still get in but not as bad. After that they don’t seem to bother it as much unless it’s an exceptionally dry year. We don’t plant any GMO varieties until our final three plantings of the season due to heavy corn earworm and European corn borer pressure after Labor Day harvest.
@ericconkey9580
@ericconkey9580 3 жыл бұрын
@@jasonwish- ok just curious because anytime we used short varieties in the past the raccoons and groundhogs would just walk along and sample ears without even pulling it down. Tried a fence around it last year which did help some. Do the gmo types on the late plantings keep you from having to spray the corn and give you adequate control of worms?
@jasonwish-
@jasonwish- 3 жыл бұрын
@@ericconkey9580 Only the Attribute 2 trait stack and Attribute Plus Trait stack does good....the older version still get lots of worms. Our favorite variety is Patriarch for our last three plantings only. It is also tolerant to Liberty (Glufosinate), but we treat ours normally as if it isn't. As far as other varieties we only plant SH2 super sweets also known as xtra-tenders.

Most years here in Minnesota we dont get our sweet corn in until the middle of may. Our soil just will not warm up earlier. Some years we still have snow and ice until the end of may which really upsets our growing season.
@jasonwish-

Dang! Totally different there in Minnesota. I’ve planted on March 30 before but it’s a little risky, second or third week of May is best for us.

@jasonwish-
@jasonwish- 4 жыл бұрын
Lol, Unfortunately most of our corn is sold around the greater Columbus area and we don’t ever make it up to the Cleveland area just too far for us. We have an Ohio KZfaq meet up once or twice a year maybe you should try to come to the next one, it’s usually held at Mohican State Park.

Have you ever had a row spacing of 1.4 m? They say it is easier to collect this way and 2 full-fledged ears are formed on the plant (this is for sowing 37500 thousand / ha). Is it really so?
@jasonwish-
@jasonwish- 4 ай бұрын
I have never tried that, and I’ve never heard of anybody trying that. Not saying it wouldn’t work, but since our planter and tractor and sprayer are all set up for 30 inch rows it would be a big pain to change all that. The spacing really has no bearing on getting two ears per plant, it all has to do with the proper nutrition and water, if both are provided at the right amount at the right time, you will always get two good harvestable ears, but it is a very rare thing without supplemental irrigation and probably only happens for us on one or two plantings out of a dozen each season. As far as the population, it looks like 37,500 seeds per Hector is around 15,200 seeds per acre which is very very low. All of our rates are 18 to 23,000 per acre or 45-55,000 per ha for sweet corn. Much much higher for field corn.

Great video thank you! I'm on a very similar operation complete also with a JD 7000. I have a question regarding your population if you'll indulge me. You said that your population is higher in your early plantings than the regular season plantings. Why is that? I keep the plantings at 19k through the whole year, but I'm definitely open to making adjustments.
@jasonwish-
@jasonwish- 3 жыл бұрын
I guess when I was getting started that’s what I was told to do by a couple other Ohio farmers who gave talks on their large sweetcorn operations at the Ohio produce conference many years ago. I think it’s because there’s more chance of having poor emergence in the cold soil with those early plantings so you want to plant little bit heavier so you still get a good yield but then as the season progresses and the soil warms up emergence will be near perfect and that’s when we go down to 19 or 20,000. Of course I could be wrong also... maybe I’m wasting seed and could get by starting at 19 or 20. Genetics are far superior these days for cold soil emergence that’s for sure.

@@jasonwish- That makes good sense to crank the pop up a bit if you're expecting poor germ. I'll definitely try that if its especially cold at planting this April. Thanks

Do you spray for weeds if so what and when please?
@jasonwish-
@jasonwish- Жыл бұрын
Yes. We normallly use all generic versions of the following: Bicep 2 magnun with 20 gal of 28% nitrogen as the carrier before planting. If weeds come up later once the corn has emerged we use Impact + atrazine with drop nozzles before the corn tassles.
