I am not an expert in religion but I remember someone told me when I was a kid that when we all die, we become spirits and spirits have no gender. When we go to heaven, we are not judged by our gender but by what we did to live our life. I am not part of the community, but I have a lot of friends who are. And they were all good people.

In my experience , Filipino culture and religious practice places a high value on coexistence even with what most Filipinos consider sinful behaviour so long as it does not affect others through criminal acts . The Catholicism in the Philippines is a model of love in many respects compared to the puritanical versions of it that exist in other countries . In an archipelago where there are already so many natural disasters and struggles to overcome , your neighbour is your strength no matter what and you learn to coexist . There is also an interesting intersection between faith and sexuality in the Philippines since it is , in my experience , a mostly western perspective that anyone who is non-heteronormative must stop believing in divine law . In other words , many Filipinos are capable of accepting Church dogma even if their actions go against it . They recognize God remains their Father even if they refuse to obey . This is not something that many westerners are capable of doing in my observation . Most of my "gay" friends here in the Philippines continue to go to church , cross themselves before meal prayer , and pray the rosary for the deliverance of their souls . Filipinos understand what it means to live in the intersection between ideal and reality . They understand that Christ came to save sinners .

Very informative. I found it interesting to learn that Filipino has gender-neutral pronouns when I began to learn the language. I noticed that my Filipina girlfriend, who speaks excellent English, would nonetheless occasionally mix-up he and she! Some non-binary English speakers have introduced they/them for the third person singular, which annoys conservative-minded individuals, but I reflect on the fact that this is a non-issue in Filipino. I'm not sure however that a language which does not use grammatical gender is reflective of a sense of sex equality in that society. Turkish and Persian are other examples, as is Chinese, although I understand this latter has been modified by Western influence.

Despite of the Philippines as socially conservative Christian-dominated nation for the longer periods of time and some crimes against the LGBTQIA+ community,the country itself became more tolerant toward them than other countries that the LGBTQIA+ community isn't the part of the society in many ways so,I believe the LGBTQIA+ people is also humans like Heterosexuals like us and should be co-exist with them at all

This might be the most controversial topic that you have presented and I applaud you for having the courage to tackle it. You might lose a few subscribers because of this but at least people now know you are not one to shy away from topics which might offend certain viewers. I once saw a Korean series that dealt with the topic of gay relationships (Lily Fever) here on youtube which I found surprising. Never thought I would see a gay kdrama series.

In the Philippines lbtq is culturally visible but not legally visible ... Much better than being oppressed in both situations

I was in Korea for 2 years and never once saw overt homosexuals in public, even in any K-drama never saw any gay characters. Gay acceptance in the Philippines came along way. They were not accepted before and were always subject to jokes in the past. Now they have political groups that lobby and supports Gay rights.

Thank you so much for doing your research on homosexuality and gender identity in pre-colonial Philippines and sharing it with your viewers because it's very important for Filipinos to know about our ancestors' very accepting community. It makes me so proud that our ancestors treated women as equals and treated queer people and trans people like any other person. It is a shame that we were forced to forget our ancestors' ideals and values due to colonization and now we're left with bigotry and hatred in their hearts. I wish we could progress and fight back against our colonizers' erasure of our history and remember our roots. It is also worth mentioning that babaylans were able to have marriages or unions with male spouses during that time. That is something I wish we could work towards in the future to bring back to our country.

I remember a rhyme from childhood: girl, boy, bakla, tomboy; girl, boy, bakla, tomboy. Who knew those rhymes children would chant speaks so much about diversity in the Philippines.

In Zamboanga City (Chavacano) we also use "serena" (mermaid = half girl, half fish) or sometimes we use "mariposa" (as a boy you're a caterpillar and you "come out" to become a butterfly! 😁😁😍😍 Love it! And what little gay boy doesn't wanna be a Little Mermaid or Madam Butterfly?! 😂

Me as a gay person, I am very thankful that my parents accepted me who I am as person. In fact I became a breadwinner in my family. I have so many things to be thankful. One of these is the community's acceptance of gender identity and sexual preferences. The government is trying their best to Protect our rights as co-equal protection with those who are straight. And for that I am so thankful. I felt blessed, knowing the fact that our status as LGBTQAI+ community in Philippines is very much in good shape compared to other advanced countries mostly in middle east or other Asian countries and Africa to whom these people are struggling with their rights. Thank you Philippines for this wonderful opportunity for us to grow and expressed our self..our feelings and aspirations in life. Love knows NO GENDER.....!jsm😊😊😊

As a christian(catholic) Lgbtq+, im proud to see my country tolerating us, gave us standard rights etc(although marriage which is not a suprise), ive seen so many Lgbtq+ people at my school, students and teachers alike. There are some bullying but majority of the bullying are just troublemakers and majority of the school also respects us. I actually don't know about the entire country celebrating, because here in my hometown, people in general, just don't make a big deal about it.. No hate, we just treat it as an ordinary day. Even the gay people don't celebrate it.

Thank you for sharing history! It was only a few months ago I learned that same-sex relationships were a norm pre-colonial Philippines.

For all those people who are like "I respect them, but not if they force it on us too", who are you to assume that they are going to force it upon you? They obviously know how it feels because straight people force heterosexuality on them all the time, they wouldn't do such a thing. Grabe kayo magpavictim, it's not even you who's being affected in this situation and all you can think about is yourself. You argue that they're just mentally ill and doing it for attention, but why would anybody willingly get ostracized, discriminated against, risk being a victim of hate crimes and having to persevere being viewed differently from their family? Use your common sense, that doesn't even make sense. Secondly, for all the delusional Catholics who believe it is a sin, why would it be a sin when a sin is something you choose to do, you can't choose who you love or that wouldn't be love, there is no difference from homosexuals to heterosexuals, they just love people like everyone else does, they just happen to be the same gender as them, the Lord will not punish someone for loving someone, do you believe that he would?. Additionally, if you're here to argue that the "sexual" part of sexualities is a sin, it's a sin for straight people to act upon their lust as well, there's no difference. So why are you numbering out those who love the same gender when those who love the opposite commit the same sin. Furthermore, most homosexual couples statistically aren't as sexually active as heterosexual couples, so it doesn't even make sense. Even a Pope of the church stated that your hatred towards them is a sin, God doesn't want you to hate people, and there isn't anything said in the 4 gospels about homosexuality, he said that himself and he reads the bible that wasn't translated over 50 times. Do not use your religion as an excuse for your close mindedness, wag nyo idamay yung Diyos. Don't even try to argue that "the lord made two genders, they should love each other" because that doesn't even make sense. Just because their are two types of one thing, doesn't mean they should be paired with each other. If they lord made pepperoni and cheese pizza, bawal ba parehas cheese pipiliin mo? Use your brain. Just admit you're too uneducated and only see one path because of what you've been taught, and don't want to see the other side of the story. You argue that they demand special treatment when they're just trying to get the same rights as straight couples in the Philippines, just trying to get "married" (not even by the church because it would violate "Matrimony", the sacrament) just legally to be able to have them as their emergency contact, to have joint ownership of lands as a "married couple" and adopt a child with both the names of the parents, just so that their civil status doesn't say "single" when they are clearly so deeply in love with their partner. Or in transgender people's cases, just so that they are comfortable in their own skin, so they aren't labelled as what they are not. To add to that, if your argument is that "wala naman yun sa panahon ko eh" precolonial Philippines states otherwise, our culture was so accepting before being colonized, educate yourself, read some books on our history, and if you lived/live in the colonial era of the Philippines, you've probably "never seen" homosexuals and transgender people because of them hiding their true selves, due to the fact that those who did express their sexuality and gender were bullied, discriminated and were thought of it just "being a phase". In fact, you should be proud that our generation is not afraid to express ourselves and tell other people because of so many people in the Philippines not being educated enough on this topic because they've always been taught that "bakla" and "tomboy" or "tibo" (tomboy is literally a style, i don't even know where they got that piece of vocabulary from) was a bad thing, so many people still believe this until now and it's time for the world, our country to modernize because of so many ridiculous stereotypes such as these. It is not just "a phase" or being "sabay sa uso" these people truely know who they are if they choose to express themselves because of all the risks they would face, it is not "basta basta lang", they know and you should respect that. Especially those who have family members or friends who are LGBT don't tell them they don't know yet and that it "could change" and it would be better if they were straight because if they've expressed it, or told you, they are sure. Trust me. "It would be better if you were straight" as those who have relations with the people of the community, you should not invalidate their feelings and again forcing heterosexuality upon them because it is literally like wishing unhappiness upon them. The amount of homosexuals and transgender people who still hide what they feel by not saying anything, or forcing themselves to be what they aren't or get a partner of their opposite gender (even when they know they don't like it) because of people they are close with who don't want them to be like that is saddening. Please don't only think of yourself, pano naman yung mga tao na "mahal" nyo? They are not trying to get special treatment, they hold pride parades because they want to spread awareness and slowly be accepted as a normality (because they are and society doesn't view it that way due to colonialism), because of people like you who are uneducated, just to get equal rights as straight people as they still haven't received the right to having civil unions with their partners, and don't blame them for wanting that because the government decided to add that to straight people's rights as a citizen, so why can't homosexuals have it? Every person is the same, and should be treated equally. I pity uneducated, close minded people, so here's a gift of education for you. Have a good day.

I was also like this before 😅 I don't really have an idea of LGBTQAI before, I was raised in a very conservative family here in the Philippines which has been very devoted to religion which is being Catholic, I only got to know about it when I was a 3rd yr highschool student where some of my classmates who are guys wears make up and everything that has similar to girls. I found it weird somehow but already learned to accept it as I see them a fun and loving individuals. I always habg out went them mostly and get often asked if am I an Lgbt member , and I just always reply with "ha?" 🤣 because honestly, I am hanging out with them but yet don't know what they're called. I just saw them as normal people , no label no any so called names , but just all human beings who loves to express on their own ways 🙂

As a bisexual man, I don’t associate myself as part of the LGBTQ community because in most cases they feel as a community everyone has to agree with everything homosexuality. I don’t agree with transgenderism. The LGBTQ community always preach about acceptance yet they can’t accept what god gave them and what they were born with. Also, in the Philippines, it’s common for the baklas to paint hot male straight celebrities as gay. Also, people love to assume that if a person is gay they have to be automatically feminine or flamboyant. Philippines has a long way to go with their ignorance.

The reason why LGBTQA is accepted here in the Philippines is because most of them are respectful and smart. I knew a lot of them are the most successful individual. They're definitely not as bad as USA who actually stop thinking logically. Most gays here when ask if a woman's bathroom should be shared with trans, they'll disagree. Very few agrees with this idea, all because trans here believe that it can be used by maniacs to sexually harassed women. Trans here still respect women. In USA you just here them yellin...and why do lesbians need to dye their hair blue or pink... LGBTQA in USA are politics driven. Here in Philippines if you're very respectful then we respect you. Respect begets respect.

Happy Pride Month! Really appreciate this safe platform, for giving the space to initiate important conversations regarding societal and cultural issues. I think that because the Philippines is mostly Catholic, the church still has a lot of pull when it comes to politics, unfortunately. But it’s great that there are organizations that support the LGBTQI community there. I think that the LGBTQI community will frequently meet a lot of resistance everywhere because of the societal norms that’s been instilled for generations, and also ignorance or a lack of understanding. Humans tend to behave differently towards something they don’t know or understand. I live in LA now, and saw on the news the other day that there were protests against the pride march that was happening locally. It’s sad. Although LA is much more progressive than Manila, this community still faces hate crimes to this day. Anyway, I honestly didn’t know much about the pre-colonial Philippines, so thank you for sharing that.

This is why I am so grateful with my churchmates/ friends. We’ve been together serving our church for 6 years. I came out to them and they learned to accept who I am. I don’t serve the church anymore and I already moved back to my home city, but we still plan travels together. Funny how they are more understanding and compassionate than some of my lgbt friends/acquaintances. The lgbt community in our province are more toxic to their own members than non-lgbt people. Truly, religion is not always the issue. It’s the close-mindedness and toxicity that people can have regardless of gender or religion.

I believe everyone no matter what their sexuality is, should be treated equally. Equal rights for everyone.
