In this motovlog, I discuss all things wheelie control! We explore early wheelie control systems, how the Aprilia Wheelie Control, or AWC, rider aid within the Aprilia Performance Ride Control (aPRC) system works, demonstrate AWC intervention, and discuss how wheelie control differs between motorcycle models and manufacturers. If you enjoy or have any feedback, please consider liking this video, commenting below, and subscribing for future Aprilia content! :)

Damn hopefully Aprilia can introduce wheelie control instead of anti wheelie one day. That’s probably the only reason that’s holding me for switching my mt09 to Tuono. It’s too much fun driving with wheelie control, hard to get rid of it even for +- twice as much power.

It would be nice, but I wouldn't overlook the bike because the wheelie control isn't great. There is a lot more about this bike that makes it a blast to ride. Plus, you can always turn it off. Since this video I've made a lot of progress and usually leave it off. 🙂

I've had a similar experience. I found I wasn't relaxing my ankle and moving it far enough off the shifter for the lever and qs to move back into position for another shift. If I make sure to move my ankle that extra bit, it works

One thing to note that makes Aprilia's IMU even awesomer is at lean, traction control will control wheelie response whereas when you get back upright, wheelie control takes back over. So even with AWC off, ATC will prevent wheelies at lean, which with good tires and smooth throttle is absolutely possible lol
@hiimchad
@hiimchad 3 жыл бұрын
If I recall correctly, AWC can differentiate between a slide and a wheelie when lean angle is less than 20 degrees. With more than that, you’re most likely going to slide anyway. But to your point, this is avoidable with good tires and throttle control, even without rider aids! 🙂
@carlosm9111
@carlosm9111 3 жыл бұрын
@@hiimchad Definitely! However a huge benefit of ATC is if you set it to the right level for your tires and conditions, you can use it to "walk" the bike around a corner where ATC allows a small slip then intervene, slip then intervene, over and over until you go back upright. Aprilia has a demo video of it, and I tested it (unwittingly) on my Tuono V4 and yes, it definitely works. Of course I needed a change of boxers after that but who cares SEND IT!!! 😂😂

Hey Chad! Nice effort there 👍 Would love to see you at a similar video with APRC's Launch Control usage and ALC settings. That's one grey area of the APRC, that I've never been able to explore. I've experienced wheelie control in action (for all the 6 gears) during my initial days of ownership of the Tuono V4 1100. The V4 being a beast that she is, during spirited runs, the bike wants to wheelie all the time. Compared to the earlier days, manual throttle control today has become more linear for me. And with my ATC setting at 1, I am managing to keep the front wheel Down, well before the ecu intervenes. Btw, I've recently completed 1 year of ownership. 😊

Hey Satyen! Thank you, and great to hear from you! I actually produced a video about using wheelie control for the first time. It doesn't go into quite as much detail, but covers things from a higher level and demonstrates as well. Not sure if you've seen that already, but in case you haven't, here is the link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z76igrOBvNLXnHk.html Let me know if that is along the lines of what you were looking for! I agree and tend to be more mindful with my right hand as well! I don't find wheelie control intervening often, unless I'm accelerating onto the straightaway at the track in 2nd gear after I have the bike stood up, or unless I'm trying to engage it 😅 Congrats on your 1 year! Here's wishing you many, many more happy years of Tuono ownership! 😁

Nice video Chad - still learning all the settings on my 2018 Tuono🙈 Good to know that you can change the AWC on the fly - not used the cruise control yet, but the ability to select AWC levels/switch off for certain sections of road will be very “useful”😃 also explains why I had only been getting “mini” wheelies (on AWC1) thus far☺️ If you have a “wheelie school” near you, well worth doing as they teach you clutch up wheelies👍🏻
@hiimchad
@hiimchad 3 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed! 😁 Yes, even on the 1 setting AWC is pretty invasive. I actually purchased a Yamaha WR250X a few months ago specifically to learn how to clutch up, and it's been going well! I'm getting to the point where I can bring the front up and consistently ride it out to the limiter in 1st, but the bike doesn't make enough power for me to be able to get the front up in 2nd gear. I think I'm too big for it.. 😅 Once I get a bit more comfortable on that, I may step up to a 450+ supermoto, and once I'm comfortable there, disable AWC. 🙂 How is your wheelie game?
@d675ose7
@d675ose7 3 жыл бұрын
@@hiimchad well done and sensible learning on a bike you’re happier to drop...👀 I did a wheelie school and learnt to clutch up on a street triple in 2nd and hold the wheelie for about 30m - but with “cut out wires” on the back in case you went too high - meant you have some feel rather than just nailing it as it would just cut the engine and save you ☺️ if you can combine a “bounce” on the front, clutching up and the power increase as one it’s easier - but the Daytona was not easy for me to wheelie being positioned over the nose and with the slipper clutch😇
@hiimchad
@hiimchad 3 жыл бұрын
@@d675ose7 I don't know if I'd say happier to drop, just less sad.. 😂 That's awesome! There is actually a wheelie school about an hour and a half from me, but it's pretty expensive so I've been hesitant to sign up. If you don't mind my asking, how much was yours, and would you say it was worth it? Appreciate the advice on the bounce! I'll have to give that a shot next time I'm on the WR! Totally understand how the Daytona would be more difficult with more load on the front. I tried to clutch up a wheelie on mine a couple time when it was a street bike, but never got the wheel off the ground 🤣

You really did not get any info about that actual wheelie control, so how much does one setting affect and let the front end get up….
@hiimchad
@hiimchad 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Terho! I did my best to communicate how the wheelie control system works and, unfortunately, it is not as sophisticated as to say setting 3 will let you get the wheel exactly 6 inches off the ground, setting 2 will let it reach 1 foot of height, and setting 1 will let you reach 2 feet. Settings 2 and 3 cut the power quite quickly, many times so quickly it doesn’t seem like the front wheel leaves the ground at all. Setting 1 will let the wheel come up a bit, but the height you can reach before the system intervenes depends on many other factors, like how quickly and far you open the throttle, how the suspension is loaded, how much momentum the front wheel has, etc. I tried my best to explain it and did not demonstrate settings 2 and 3 because nothing really happens, but perhaps I should have. I appreciate your feedback. 🙂

Great explanation. Does AWC 1/2/3 differ in how abrupt it engages or how long you can bring the front up? I wish aPRC had the Ducati degree set wheelie control, that's pretty fancy. Keep up the great work!
@hiimchad
@hiimchad 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Sam, glad you enjoyed! Setting the AWC changes how quickly wheelie control will engage. So, if you have it set to AWC on 3 (highest setting, most invasive) it will barely let you get the front wheel off the ground unless you do something risky like a clutch drop at high RPM. 2 will give you a little more freedom, so the wheel will come up a tiny bit more and for maybe half a second longer, and 1 will let you get a few inches or maybe a foot before it intervenes. Of course you disable the system entirely, in which case you're on your own 🙃 It sounds like the way Ducati's system works is much more precise! AWC is really more of an anti-wheelie measure than actual wheelie control. That's really cool that you can set a max wheelie angle! Sounds like actual wheelie "control".

As a general rule and tl:dr don't ham fist the throttle. Treat it gently and you don't need to worry about uncontrollable wheelies. Of course on modern bikes assuming you have anti-wheelie on you can be a lot more ham fisted with much less bad side effects lol, still it's not a guarantee.
